Life history theory predicts a trade-off between current and future reproduction. Despite a wealth of research on the cost of reproduction for females, there have been very few studies that have looked at the cost of reproduction for males. Longevity is closely related to the opportunity for future reproduction, and thus decreased longevity in response to current reproductive effort has been used as a measure of the cost of reproduction. Here we examine the cost of reproduction for males and females in the dung beetle Onthophagus binodis. Like many onthophagines, O. binodis exhibit dimorphic male morphology; major males develop a large pronotal horn while minor males remain hornless. Alternative morphologies are associated with alternative reproductive tactics. Thus, we ask whether major and minor males pay different costs of reproduction. We found that in contrast to previous work on Diptera, mating is not costly in terms of reduced longevity for female dung beetles. Despite a longevity cost of reproduction for males, we found no evidence for differential longevity costs associated with alternative reproductive tactics.

We proposed that married persons would want their spouses to see them as they saw themselves but that dating persons would want their relationship partners to evaluate them favorably. A survey of 176 married and dating couples tested these predictions. Just as married persons were most intimate with spouses whose evaluations verified their self-views, dating persons were most intimate with partners who evaluated them favorably. For married people with negative self-views, then, intimacy increased as their spouses evaluated them more negatively. Marriage apparently precipitates a shift from a desire for positive evaluations to a desire for self-verifying evaluations.

We have used a quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping approach to study the genetic basis of differences between two Drosophila virilis strains representing extreme phenotypes in two song characters, the number of pulses in a pulse train (PN) and the length of a pulse train (PTL). Variation in these characters among 520 F2 males was studied by single-marker analysis and composite interval mapping (CIM) using a recombination linkage map constructed for 26 microsatellite markers. In single-marker analysis, two adjacent microsatellite markers on the third chromosome, msat19 and vir84 explained 13.8 and 12.4% of the variation in PN and 9.9 and 6.5% of the variation in PTL, respectively. CIM analysis revealed significant QTLs affecting PN, located on the X and the second, third and fourth chromosome of D. virilis, while variation in PTL was attributable to QTLs located only on the third chromosome.
