Chen Li: China's elder psychologist.

Chen Li is one of a small group of psychologists in China who trained abroad early in their careers, returned to teach and do research, and continued doing so into later life beyond normal retirement age. His contacts with a number of prominent psychologists in England and Germany in the 1930s, and his inadvertent position at the center of a political row in China in the 1960s, leading to the shutting down of psychology for 10 years, made him historically important. Known for his work in organizational psychology and education, he is a distinguished psychologist and educational leader. Although trained as an experimentalist, he now embraces a broader view of psychology but remains emphatic it should be applied to real-life problems.

The consequences of political dictatorship for Russian science.

The Soviet communist regime had devastating consequences on the state of Russian twentieth century science. Country Communist leaders promoted Trofim Lysenko--an agronomist and keen supporter of the inheritance of acquired characters--and the Soviet government imposed a complete ban on the practice and teaching of genetics, which it condemned as a "bourgeois perversion". Russian science, which had previously flourished, rapidly declined, and many valuable scientific discoveries made by leading Russian geneticists were forgotten.

[Antipsychiatry -- a provisional inventory].

The antipsychiatry movement during the 60's and 70's was characterized by ideas of mental illness as a result of political repression and social problems, supported by the philosophy of Neomarxism. Although their exponents failed because of uneffectiveness, until today some theoretical relicts remained in sociological and literary niches or in small groups of "new antipsychiatry", fighting against pharmacological treatment, hospitalization and any kind of guardianship.
