This study demonstrates that the locus D1S80 is highly polymorphic in the Bahrainian population. There were 24 different D1S80 alleles and 51 distinct genotypes observed in 198 Bahrainians. There was one allele observed that was smaller than the 14 repeat allele. This data set meets the Hardy-Weinberg expectations (HWE) and could be a useful marker for parentage testing and forensic applications.
The prevalence of hidden psychiatric morbidity was assessed using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HAD). A total of 149 Bahraini patients aged > or = 16 years were selected randomly from those attending primary health care centres for problems other than psychiatric illness. The prevalence of psychiatric morbidity using GHQ was 45.1% (cut-off > or = 5) and 27.1% (cut-off > or = 9). Using the HAD scale, the prevalence was 44.4% (cut-off > or = 8) and 23.6% (cut-off > or = 11). Psychiatric morbidity was more common in women aged 50-55 years, in divorcees or widows and in lesser educated patients. Either instrument could be used to diagnose psychiatric illness.
This study assessed the trends in the health status of Bahraini women from the early 1980s to the mid 1990s through review of census data and health data. Sociodemographic characteristics, reproductive health, mortality, morbidity and lifestyle patterns were studied. The implications of the data and measures needed to be taken to further improve the health and health care services of women are discussed.
Having well-established and active medical associations in the Arabian Gulf countries is a promising event. Ideally, however, it must be assured that these associations are efficiently and effectively functioning in a manner designed to serve the ultimate goal of promoting the standards of the medical profession and thus, the quality of health care in the region. This paper is designed to promote the application of Continuous Quality Improvement principles by the medical associations in the Arabian Gulf. The paper is presented in a general format so as to allow for appropriate modifications according to the specific objectives of different medical associations. The indicators identified in this proposal to assess the quality of structure, process or outcome are not intended as a comprehensive list. Rather, the authors aim at establishing a framework on which various fine-tuned and appropriately tailored systems can be based.
OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence and risk factors for postoperative infection following cesarean sections and major gynecological surgery. METHODS: Postoperative infection was documented in the specified registers in all patients following cesarean sections and major gynecological surgery from January 1997 to December 1998. This study was a part of the prospective analysis of hospital-based morbidity and mortality in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. RESULTS: There were a total of 89 cases of postoperative infections amongst 4,032 patients undergoing major operations giving an overall infection rate of 2.2%. The morbidity due to infections was 3.3% in cesarean sections and 0.9% in major gynecological surgery. Abdominal hysterectomies had a higher infection rate than vaginal surgery. The most common causative organisms isolated were Enterococcus, Staphylococcus and Klebsiella species. CONCLUSION: It was found that vaginal flora was a significant source of contamination during surgery, which could be minimised by local sterilisation methods. The high infective morbidity in abdominal hysterectomies needs further analysis of the risk factors. Infection surveillance with a regular review of antibiotic protocols is recommended.

The clinical, laboratory and cytological features of 2 Bahraini infants with Wolman's disease are described. While one of the cases showed the classical diagnostic features, the other case exhibited a few atypical features such as lack of adrenal calcification and unusual morphology of vacuolated marrow macrophages. Literature review shows that this disorder may not be rare in this region.
The review investigates changes in the morbidity and mortality due to noncommunicable diseases in the Bahraini population and looks at the conditions which may have contributed to them in the 1980s and 1990s. Data were extracted from the Ministry of Health annual health reports and the 1981 and 1991 censuses and other relevant published papers. Government strategies for the control of noncommunicable diseases and the promotion of healthy lifestyles are outlined.
