The taxonomic status of Echinococcus cruzi Brumpt and Joyeux, 1924 (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from an agouti (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae) in Brazil.

Paratype material of Echinococcus cruzi Brumpt and Joyeux, 1924, described from an agouti, Dasyprocta leporina (L.), in Brazil, was compared with Echinococcus oligarthrus (Diesing, 1863), of which the larval stage occurs also in agoutis and other rodents in South America and Central America. Comparisons of the larval cestodes (metacestodes) showed that the rostellar hooks from protoscolices of the two taxa corresponded in form, and their slightly greater lengths in E. cruzi were considered to be of no taxonomic significance. They agreed as well in other morphological characteristics. Echinococcus cruzi was compared also with the other neotropical species, E. vogeli Rausch and Bernstein, 1972, Based on these comparisons and in agreement with the earlier conclusion of Cameron (1926), E. cruzi Brumpt and Joyeux, 1924 is placed in synonymy with E. oligarthrus (Diesing, 1863).

The gallbladder of the Capivara Hydrochoerus hydrochoeris (Mammalia: Rodentia).

The authors studied morphological and histochemically the mucopolysaccharides and proteins in the gallbladder tubular glands and epithelial cells of the capivara Hydrochoerus hydrochoeris. Based on the results the authors concluded: 1. the gallbladder single columnar epithelium consists of secretory, migrating, and goblet cells; 2. in the lamina propria are single coiled tubular glands; 3. goblet and tubular gland cells show neutral and sulphated mucopolysaccharides and sialic acid; 4. columnar cells show neutral mucopolysaccharides and protein radicals; 5. migrating cells show only protein radicals.

The effect of several endocrine factors on the growth of ventral sebaceous gland of Rhombomys opimus (Rodentia, Mammalia) in diffusion chambers.

The growth of cells of ventral sebaceous gland of Rhombomys opimus was studied in diffusion chambers. The surface properties of these cells and intercellular contacts have been examined in the scanning electron microscope. After 10 to 12 days of cultivation the cells formed aggregates showing a recognizable histological pattern (the ventral sebaceous gland). The pituitary and ovarian gland explants had a significant effect on the differentiation and mitotic activity of epithelial cells of the ventral sebaceous gland. Apparently it is the cell surface itself that alters during the active processes of secretion and differentiation.

[Home range, use of habitat and daily activity of the gopher Orthogeomys heterodus (Rodentia: Geomyidae) in a Costa Rican horticultural area].

Home range, daily activity and habitat use of four Giant Pocket Gophers Orthogeomys heterodus were determined by radiotelemetry. The study was carried out in a horticultural area of Cartago province, Costa Rica, during December 1989 and January 1990. Home range averaged 325 m2 for males and 233 m2 for females. There was a significant relationship between home range size and individual body mass. In average, 78% of localizations were in the nest or refuge located in all cases in the border of crops. Activity was greatest from 0600 to 0800 h and 1200 to 1400 h, and was reduced at night.
