The efficacy of endovascular irradiation of the blood with He-Ne laser by the method developed by the authors was examined in 295 patients with primary acute transmural myocardial infarction. Laser therapy was conducive to effective alleviation of the pain syndrome and prevention of anginous status. Twenty-four-hour Holter monitoring, carried out before and after irradiation, has detected high antiarrhythmic activity in respect of complex ventricular arrhythmias and a preventive possibility of fibrillations. Studies of precardial ECG parameters and measurements of the blood enzymic activities (creatine phosphokinase and MB creatine phosphokinase) have shown that irradiation carried out within the first hours of myocardial infarction is conducive to limitation of the infarction area, i.e. that endovascular laser therapy is a highly effective and pathogenetic method for acute myocardial infarction treatment.
The authors analyze the efficacy of He-Ne laser therapy of amblyopia of various origins in 48 children (81 eyes). Group 1 children were not treated at all in order to assess the visual function background fluctuations (absolute controls). Along with He-Ne laser, used in Group 2, a 'placebo', slit lamp with blinking light, was used in Group 3. Vision acuity was assessed with the use of Sivtsev-Golovin's and Orlova's tables and by visocontrastometry in a blind test. Common visometry has shown a reliable and approximately similar improvement of the vision acuity in Groups 2 and 3 patients, whereas visocontrastometry has not detected any changes of visual function in all the 3 groups. These results cast doubt on the true efficacy of He-Ne laser stimulation of visual function, at least in children, and once again demonstrate that such investigations may be carried out only with a reliable ('blind') control and placebo.

Molecular hydrogen yields are reported for cupric sulfate solutions irradiated with high-energy heavy ions. The data are sparse but appear to be consistent with expectations from current theoretical models of the track structure of these ions. By considering these data in conjunction with previously published yields from other systems, estimates of the total water decomposition yields, G'-H2O, have been made.

Chemical yields of H2O2 have been measured from aerated aqueous solutions of bromide and of formate irradiated at various pHs and solute concentrations with high-energy ions from the Berkeley Bevalac. Hydroxyl radical yields have been deduced from these data as a function of beam penetration into the solutions. By taking fragmentation of the primary ions into account, estimates of the instantaneous Gi OH values for the primary beams as a function of their energy have been made.

Neutral aqueous solutions of sodium nitrate/ethanol have been irradiated with high-energy heavy ions from the Berkeley Bevalac. Yields of nitrite have been used to estimate G values for the hydrated electron as a function of the residual range of these ions. Values of G(e-aq) have been estimated as a function of ion energy by adjusting the measured values for the effects of heavy ion fragmentation.
