[Vitamin A, E and C serum concentration in patients with Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies--non-symptomatic carriers].

To estimate vitamin A, E and C serum concentrations among forestry workers showing antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi presence. Vitamins A, E and C concentrations were evaluated in 117 sera of forestry workers. 78 persons aged 18-63 (x=43.07) showed antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi presence. In this group 13 persons showed presence of IgM, 42 persons with IgG and 23 with IgM and IgG. Control group consisted of 39 persons aged 18-56 years (x=40,97), with no detectable anti-Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in serum. Serologic diagnosis was performed with use of ELISA kit - Borrelia recombinant IgM, IgG (Biomedica, Austria). Vitamins A and E serum concentrations were detected by RP-HPLC method with spectrophotometric detection (De Leenheet and co.). Vitamin C was detected by RP-HPLS method with spectrophotometric method (Ivanovic and co). Obtains results were statistically analysed. Significantly lower of vitamin A and E serum concentration of persons with anti-borrelia antibodies presence. The lowest concentration was observed in group showing presence of IgM and IgG. No significant difference in vitamin C serum concentration in examined groups was observed. These results may suggest that low serum concentrations of vitamin A and E may have influence on Borrelia burgdorferi infection development.

Bioprocess design and economic analysis for the commercial production of environmentally friendly bioinsecticides from Bacillus thuringiensis HD-1 kurstaki.

A production process for B. thuringiensis (Bt) bioinsecticides was designed in detail, including alternative batch, low-density fed-batch (LDFB), and high-density fed-batch (HDFB) fermentation configurations. Capital and operating costs, as well as profitability based on simple rate of return, were performed using a purpose-written FORTRAN program, explicitly analyzing production of a water-based flowable product used in forestry applications. The total capital cost was 18 million dollars (Canadian dollars) for a stand-alone plant with base-scale capacity of 3 x 10(7) billion international units (BIU)/year. Raw material costs amounted to 1.5 million dollars yearly, of which approximately half was for formulation ingredients. Per-unit production cost rose sharply for scales of less than 1 x 10(7) BIU/year, but was little affected by scale above 3 x 10(7) BIU/year. Product cost was much lower at all scales for a LDFB as opposed to batch fermentation process, but HDFB gave relatively little additional cost benefit. Profitability analysis performed by co-varying scale and selling price showed that break-even occurred at a price of 0.45 dollars/BIU for a batch process at base scale, while with LDFB fermentation the same production volume sold at 0.35 dollars/BIU gave a 12% rate of return. Since the assumed base scale would represent 8-15% of current world Bt bioinsecticide production, based on value or volume, it was concluded that profitability would require some or all of the following elements: targeting higher-value markets such as disease vector control, in addition to forestry; a potentially lower plant capacity (although at least 1 x 10(7) BIU/year;) and coproduction of other large-volume microbial products to absorb capacity and match bioinsecticide output to market demand.

The Area Production Model: a tool and concept for sustainable land-use and forest-resource management.

In developing countries, planning in the forestry sector has been seen as an appropriate instrument to prepare and implement government policies and programs. Despite its potential and recent advancements in, for example, remote sensing and infrastructure, tropical forest land-use planning is often formal and non-integrated with agriculture. It rarely involves all legitimate stakeholders and neglects taking into account actual land-use. The socio-economic and environmental consequences of these shortcomings emphasise the need for alternative ways of approaching planning. This article summarises the idea, structure and current status of the Area Production Model (APM), originally developed in the 1980s, which is now gaining interest as a land-use planning tool in Africa and Asia. It describes the development over time of production and consumption in agriculture and forestry within a defined geographical area operating under different assumptions on management, land use and socio-economic and macro-economic changes. From a narrow perspective, the APM is a fairly simple computerised tool for generating scenarios. In a broad sense, it is a concept comprising the whole planning process including organisation, inventory, data analysis, consensus building and strategy. A case-study in Laos, based on verified data for a historical period of 45 years, and a review of different APM applications in the world over the last 15 years are presented as a base for conclusions about its potential and shortcomings. In some cases where the APM concept was used in training courses and planning exercises involving stakeholders, it generated a strong interest in collecting and analysing relevant information. It provides the means of addressing a number of shortcomings in current planning.

Conserving the Biological Diversity of Forests: Program and Organizational Experiences of State Governments in the United States.

/ Major responsibility for conserving forest biodiversity is often assigned to natural resource agencies. Often unknown is the appropriate administrative context for doing so, especially the organizational location for biodiversity programs in state government, suitable levels of financial and professional investment in biodiversity programs, processes useful for coordinating programs located in different administrative settings, and the effectiveness of biodiversity programs, especially conditions associated with programs judged to be very effective. Focusing on forests, a nationwide survey of 156 forestry agency and biodiversity program administrators in all 50 states was undertaken. Effective forest biodiversity programs were those with a long-range plan, administered as a single organizational unit, located in close organizational proximity to a state's forestry agency, actively providing management practice advice to landowners, administrators, and the public, and firm actions taken to ensure coordination with other natural resource programs.

Fire regenerative syndromes of forest woody species across fire and climatic gradients.

Community resilience after fire is determined by species' ability to regenerate through two main mechanisms growth of new sprouts (resprouter species) and germination from surviving seed banks or from seeds arriving from neighbouring populations (seeder species). Both the mechanisms are present in Mediterranean communities. The occurrence of both the types in a community depends on fire history and the bio-geographical history determining the available species pool. Regenerative traits also covary with other functional attributes associated with resource acquisition and stress tolerance. As post-fire regenerative responses can be related to various ecological factors other than fire, we tested the hypothesis of a different proportional representation of post-fire regenerative syndromes in forest woody species along a climatic gradient in Catalonia (NE Spain) ranging from Mediterranean to temperate-boreal climates. Specifically, we expected seeder species to become less common with colder and moister conditions while resprouters would not be so influenced by the climatic gradient. We also tested the hypothesis of change in the relative abundance of regenerative syndromes in relation to recent fire history. We analysed a large database obtained from extensive forestry surveys and remote sensing fire records. After correction for spatial autocorrelation, we found an increase in the proportion of seeder species under more Mediterranean conditions and a decrease in fire-sensitive species (with no efficient mechanisms of post-fire recovery) in moister conditions. Resprouter species were similarly present across the whole gradient. A similar pattern was observed after excluding recently burnt plots. Therefore, post-fire regenerative syndromes segregate along the climatic gradient. Recent fires reduced the occurrence of fire-sensitive species and increased the proportion of seeder species. No significant effect was observed on resprouter species. Fire has a sorting effect, shaping the occurrence of species with different regenerative traits. Overall, fire seems to explain better the variability of the proportion of fire-sensitive species and climate the variability of seeder species. In addition, other factors (forestry practices and the covariation between regenerative and functional attributes) are likely to contribute to the regional pattern of regenerative syndromes.

Serologic evidence of ehrlichiosis among humans and wild animals in The Netherlands.

The seroprevalence of antibodies directed against granulocytic and monocytic Ehrlichia was determined by use of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis agent and Ehrlichia chaffeensis as surrogate antigens. Seven hundred twenty-one serum samples were collected between 1992 and 1999 from febrile patients with unresolved aetiology (n=108), patients suspected of having Lyme disease (n=174), forestry workers (n=154) and healthy controls (n=54) as well as from wild deer (n=96), hares (n=60), wild boar (n=15) and red foxes (n=60). Reactive antibodies against granulocytic Ehrlichia were detected in 4% of febrile patients with unresolved aetiology and in 4% of patients suspected of having Lyme disease. Among the forestry workers, 1% tested positive for antibodies against granulocytic Ehrlichia, whereas all the healthy controls were negative. Antibody reaction against monocytic Ehrlichia was detected in only 2% of the febrile patients. Granulocytic Ehrlichia and monocytic Ehrlichia-reactive serum antibodies were detected in 22% and 3% of the deer samples, respectively, and in 2% of the hares. In wild boars and in red foxes, only serum antibodies reactive against monocytic Ehrlichia were detected in 13% and 7%, respectively. The demonstration of the presence of both granulocytic and monocytic Ehrlichia-reactive serum antibodies among humans and wild animals in The Netherlands indicates that patients suspected of having Lyme disease and febrile patients with unresolved aetiology should be tested for the presence of granulocytic and monocytic Ehrlichia antibodies or by polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, granulocytic Ehrlichia are most prevalent in humans and animals in The Netherlands.

Impacts of educational level and employment status on mortality for Japanese women and men: the Jichi Medical School cohort study.

The objective of this study was to examine educational levels and employment status as independent determinants of overall and cause-specific mortality in a Japanese population. Participants were 4,301 men and 6,780 women in a multi-center community-based prospective study, and data of the baseline survey was collected between 1992 and 1995. The participants were followed up until December 31, 2002 (the average follow-up period was 9.17 years). Early termination of education was associated with an increased risk of mortality from all causes for both men and women. This tendency was more prominent in women aged 59 and younger (hazard ratio (HR) = 3.82, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.18-12.34), after adjusting for confounding factors using the Cox proportional hazard models. Similar trends were shown for men; specifically, cardiovascular disease mortality for all men was increased by early termination of education (HR = 2.97, 95% CI: 1.17-7.52) compared to later termination. For employment status, unemployed men showed increased mortality from all causes compared to white-collar workers (HR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.00-2.28). Female farmers and forestry workers showed reduced mortality from all causes compared to white-collar workers (HR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.33-0.93). Male farmers and forestry workers also showed reduced mortality from cardiovascular diseases compared to white-collar workers (HR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.14-0.82). Educational level and employment status may affect mortality for Japanese women and men.

Earmuff effectiveness against chainsaw noise over a 12-month period.

A study measuring the ability of new Peltor H7P3 Grade 4 helmet-mounted earmuffs to reduce the level of chainsaw noise reaching forestry workers' ears was undertaken over a one-year period. The objective was to establish effective replacement guidelines for earmuffs. The results showed that the earmuffs provided effective hearing protection for the subjects over the one-year test period. There were no statistically significant changes in field attenuation levels during the first 9 months. While the following three-month period (9-12 months) did experience a significant 3 dB(A) decrease, mean inside microphone noise level measured at the 12-month stage was 78.8 +/- 3.0 dB(A). This level is well under the damage risk criterion of Leq (8 hour) not exceeding 85 dB(A). It was noted during the study that a large proportion of the earmuffs would normally have been replaced before the 12-month stage owing to the discomfort associated with cushion deterioration. Results suggest that Peltor H7P3 grade 4 helmet-mounted earmuffs could be safely used as an effective form of chainsaw noise protection in a production forestry environment for a maximum period of 12 months before cushion replacement.

Clusters of malformations in Sweden: a study with central registers.

Clustering of malformations and especially of spina bifida in Sweden was studied using the Register of Malformations and the Medical Birth Records Register. The incentive to this study was provided by the observation of a cluster of malformations, notably spina bifida, and perinatal deaths, locally thought to be related to the use of herbicides in forestry. This cluster was verified but it was shown that a high rate of spina bifida existed in the region before the introduction of herbicides in forestry. Some other clusters of spina bifida were identified and also a number of clusters of other malformations. Case-history studies were performed but revealed no lead to an explanation. Principles in the origin of the clusters and their analysis are discussed.

Linking carbon sequestration science with local sustainability: an integrated assessment approach.

This paper introduces an integrated assessment (IA) approach for a Canada-China joint research project that linked forest carbon sequestration, forest resource management, and local sustainability enhancement. The purpose of the IA was to improve the measurement of carbon in different land uses and vegetation covers, as well as to direct decision makers to those land uses or options as an CO(2) emission reduction strategy while supporting rural sustainable development. In this connection, three questions are addressed in this paper: 1) How will forestry carbon sequestration land use policies affect regional sustainability prospects in rural China? 2) How could carbon sequestration land use plans be better integrated into sustainable development strategies? and 3) How can the IA approach assist Chinese government agencies in design effective forestry land use policies? The IA approach was applied in three rural sites of western China. These case studies are described in detail by following articles in this volume. The project improved the capacity of local resource managers in identifying the economic, social and environmental impacts of rural land use decisions that might increase carbon sequestration and enhance local livelihood.

Diffuse and point pollution impacts on the pathogen indicator organism level in the Geum River, Korea.

The pathogens originating from diffuse pollution have raised much concern recently. In many countries, pathogen levels are monitored in surface water by measuring the pathogen indicator organism level, which indicates the concentration of pathogen associated microorganisms to determine contamination. Among indicator organisms, total coliform, fecal coliform, and Escherichia coli were selected for study, and their concentration as well as their flow rate were monitored at monitoring stations from October, 2001 to April, 2003. Monitoring stations include six sampling stations in the Geum River, two small watersheds used for forestry and agricultural land, one large wastewater treatment plant, one separate sewer overflow site, and one separate sewer overflow site in the Geum River basin. The coliform concentration of the combined sewer overflow was the highest, followed by the runoff from agricultural land use, the separate sewer overflow, and the runoff from forestry land use. The Pearson correlation coefficient for flow rate against total coliform concentration was 0.71 and was significant at 0.01 level, while the Pearson coefficient for other water quality constituents showed weak correlation (-0.36 to +0.37) against flow rate. Coliform concentration showed higher correlation against suspended solid concentration or flow rate during storm flow condition than during low flow condition. Two different relationship lines could explain the relationships between the flow rate and coliform loadings. Load duration curve technique was presented to assess the relative contributions of diffuse and point source pollution to the pathogen level at monitoring sites in the Geum River.

A renewed perspective on agroforestry concepts and classification.

Agroforestry, the association of trees with farming practices, is progressively becoming a recognized land-use discipline. However, it is still perceived by some scientists, technicians and farmers as a sort of environmental fashion which does not deserve credit. The peculiar history of agroforestry and the complex relationships between agriculture and forestry explain some misunderstandings about the concepts and classification of agroforestry and reveal that, contrarily to common perception, agroforestry is closer to agriculture than to forestry. Based on field experience from several countries, a structural classification of agroforestry into six simple categories is proposed: crops under tree cover, agroforests, agroforestry in a linear arrangement, animal agroforestry, sequential agroforestry and minor agroforestry techniques. It is argued that this pragmatic classification encompasses all major agroforestry associations and allows simultaneous agroforestry to be clearly differentiated from sequential agroforestry, two categories showing contrasting ecological tree-crop interactions. It can also contribute to a betterment of the image of agroforestry and lead to a simplification of its definition.

The versatile August Bier (1861-1949), father of spinal anesthesia.

"A professor is a gentleman with a different point of view." This characteristic and sarcastic statement was often recited by August Bier (1861-1949) and can also be aptly applied to him. As the father of spinal and intravenous regional neural blockade, Bier had a tremendous impact on surgery and anesthesia. It took him only two years to become a senior lecturer in surgery (so-called "Habilitation") under the guidance of Friedrich von Esmarch. In 1899, he was appointed chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Greifswald. From there, he moved to the University of Bonn in 1903 and then succeeded Ernst von Bergmann in Berlin in 1907. Bier's interest in the philosophical theories of Hippocrates and Heraclitus had a significant influence on his outlook on medical practice. His surgical colleagues disapproved of this and his interest in homeopathy. On the other hand, he earned much respect as the co-author of a surgical textbook, i.e., Chirurgische Operationslehre (Operative Surgery). He had a remarkable breadth of nonmedical interests, including philosophy and forestry, and the ideas he expressed are viable even today. His publications on philosophical subjects are as up to date as his concepts in forestry. In 1932, Bier finally decided to retire, although by then he was no longer operating. From that time on, he lived out his days at his estate in Sauen, and he died in 1949 at the age of 88. In this paper we describe some previously unknown aspects of Bier's work in both surgery and research; anesthesiologists and their patients are the beneficiaries of two other of his inventions, namely, spinal and IV local anesthesia. Unfortunately, it is not possible to acknowledge all the innovations of this ingenious surgeon, who truly deserved the description "A professor is a gentleman with a different point of view."

Biobased grease with improved oxidation performance for industrial application.

Vegetable oils have significant potential as a base fluid and a substitute for mineral oil for grease formulation. This paper describes the preparation of biobased grease with high oxidative stability and a composition useful for industrial, agriculture/farming equipment, and forestry applications. The process utilizes more oxidatively stable epoxy vegetable oils as the base fluid, metal-soap thickener, and several specialty chemicals identified to address specific applications. Performance characteristics of greases used for industrial and automotive applications are largely dependent on the hardness and the oxidative stability of grease. Grease hardness was determined using standard test methods, and their oxidative stabilities were determined using pressurized differential scanning calorimetry and rotary bomb oxidation tests. Wear data were generated using standard test methods in a four-ball test geometry. Results indicate that grease developed with this method can deliver at par or better performance properties (effective lubrication, wear protection, corrosion resistance, friction reduction, heat removal, etc.) than existing mineral oil-based greases currently used in similar trades. Therefore, developed greases can be a good substitute for mineral oil-based greases in industrial, agriculture, forestry, and marine applications.

[In memory of August Bier (1861-1949)].

"A professor is a gentleman of different opinion" this striking and sarcastic remark, which the surgeon August Bier often quoted in his lectures, can be applied to the pioneer of the lumbar and intravenous local anesthesia himself. Bier, born in 1861, in many ways influenced surgery, anesthesia and general medicine with his contributions through the decades. A student of the Kieler surgeon Friedrich von Esmarch, he habilitated after only two years. 1899 he received a call to the university in Greifswald, went to Bonn University in 1903 and finally in 1907 became the successor of Ernst von Bergmann in the acclaimed Klinik in der Ziegelstrasse in Berlin. The philosophic thoughts of Heraklit and Hippokrates influenced his own teleologic view of medicine and his (Reizkörper) and hyperemia therapy. He kept his interest in both subjects as well as in homeopathy throughout his life; an interest few of his surgical colleagues shared. His Chirurgische Operationslehre (Surgical Theory) however, which appeared in countless editions, met with undiluted consent. His publications on philosophic questions are still of interest today, as are his concepts on forestry which he could apply to his own estate in Sauen. When Bier was emerited in 1932 he was almost completely retired and lived on his estate. He dies there in 1949 at the age or 88, respected world-wide as a bionomic thinker, surgeon and expert on forestry. In the following we wish to point out the lesser known aspects of the surgeon August Bier, who enriched our special field by introducing spinal and intravenous anesthesia into it at the turn of the century. It is not possible to acknowledge all of the achievements of this restlessly working, sometimes difficult surgeon, this scientist to whom always could be applied: "A professor is a gentleman of different opinion!"

Occupation and asthma: a population-based incident case-control study.

The authors assessed the relations between occupation and risk of developing asthma in adulthood in a 1997-2000 population-based incident case-control study of 521 cases and 932 controls in south Finland. The occupations were classified according to potential exposure to asthma-causing inhalants. Asthma risk was increased consistently for both men and women in the chemical (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 5.69, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08, 29.8), rubber and plastic (OR = 2.61, 95% CI: 0.92, 7.42), and wood and paper (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 0.71, 4.17) industries. Risk in relation to occupation was increased only for men-for bakers and food processors (OR = 8.62, 95% CI: 0.86, 86.5), textile workers (OR = 4.70, 95% CI: 0.29, 77.1), electrical and electronic production workers (OR = 2.83, 95% CI: 0.82, 6.93), laboratory technicians (OR = 1.66, 95% CI: 0.17, 16.6), and storage workers (OR = 1.57, 95% CI: 0.40, 6.19). Of the predominantly men's occupations, metal (OR = 4.52, 95% CI: 2.35, 8.70) and forestry (OR = 6.00, 95% CI: 0.96, 37.5) work were the strongest determinants of asthma. For women, asthma risk increased for waiters (OR = 3.03, 95% CI: 1.10, 8.31), cleaners (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 0.81, 2.48), and dental workers (OR = 4.74, 95% CI: 0.48, 46.5). Results suggest an increased asthma risk both in traditional industries and forestry and in several nonindustrial occupations.

Smoking-adjusted incidence of lung cancer among Swedish men in different occupations.

The Swedish Cancer-Environment Register was used to study the relation between occupation and lung cancer risk during the period 1961-79 in 1.6 million men aged 30-64 years in 1960. By adding information concerning smoking habits from a sample of 1% of the Swedish population, smoking-adjusted standardized incidence ratios (SIR) were estimated for different occupational categories according to the population census of 1960. Smoking-adjusted excess risks (p less than 0.01) were found in assemblers and machine erectors, drivers, miners, packers and longshoremen as well as in sheetmetal workers. Significantly fewer lung cancer cases than expected were seen in artists and writers, chemical and cellulose workers, farmers, farm workers, forestry workers, public administrators and in teachers. As a result of a high prevalence of smoking, the smoking-adjusted SIR was markedly lower than the unadjusted SIR in artists and writers, drivers, mechanics and repairmen, members of the armed forces and painters. The opposite situation was seen for clergy, farmers and forestry workers.

Malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma linked with agricultural occupations in a New Zealand Cancer Registry-based study.

Mortality studies have indicated that workers in agriculture and forestry may be at increased risk of developing malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma. The authors report the findings from a case-control study of 734 male malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma patients (International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 200-203) registered with the New Zealand Cancer Registry in the period 1977-1981 and aged 20 years or more at time of registration. Controls also were males chosen from the cancer registry with four controls per case, matched on age and year of registration. The case group contained a significant excess of the occupational category involving agriculture and forestry (odds ratio = 1.25, 95% confidence limits = 1.00, 1.56). This excess was almost entirely among those aged less than 65 years at time of registration (odds ratio = 1.45, 95% confidence limits = 1.08, 1.95), particularly among patients with multiple myeloma (ICD 203) (odds ratio = 2.22, 95% confidence limits = 1.31, 3.75) and the category including nodular lymphoma, mycosis fungoides, and unspecified non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (ICD 202) (odds ratio = 1.76, 95% confidence limits = 1.03, 3.02). Mortality from malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma increased significantly during the period 1955-1979.
