[The suicide problem in Stefan Zweig's works].

The life of the Vienna-born writer Stefan Zweig, whose centenary will be on November 28th, 1981, is portrayed in the light of some external data. His works - mainly novellas - in which the theme of suicide plays a central role, are briefly presented, and his preference for describing psychological borderline and extreme states is stressed. One of his first poems and his last one - more than forty years lie between them - are discussed with reference to his depression and suicidal tendencies. Zweig, who at least since the First World war had been periodically suffering from depressions, was looked after and in a sense also treated by his first wife Friderike von Winternitz, until he had to leave his home in Salzburg in 1935. In 1939, he divorced from his wife and married his sickly secretary, Lotte Altmann, who suffered from asthma and depression. After prolonged stays in England, North and South America he settled in Petropolis near Rio de Janeiro in Brasil, where he spent the last months of his life. Zweig was the second son of a dominating, self-willed mother and a dignified, almost "motherly" father. He felt his childhood to have been constricted and hemmed in. His narcissism, which has played an essential role in relation to his suicide, has its roots in his childhood. Direct as well as indirect hints at suicide were not lacking during the last two years of Zweig's life, which were increasingly filled with depression and anxiety. The preface to his autobiography "The World of Yesterday" may be interpreted as an indirect announcement of suicide. On February 22nd, 1942, Zweig committed suicide together with his second wife in Petropolis.

[Life review: promoting the developmental potentials in aging].

In this paper the theoretical background and practical applications of the life review are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the relevance of the life review for the mastery of developmental transitions across the entire life span as well as for adaptation to the challenges commonly associated with aging. The terms guided autobiography, life review and reminiscence are explained as are techniques for guiding reminiscence and life review. The life review is presented as a method which can be effectively used in community or institutional settings.

The evolution of patients' theories of pathogenesis.

The author views the patient's theory of pathogenesis as a compromise formation to which both patient and analyst contribute in important ways. Unlike conventional autobiography or case histories, the patient's theory of pathogenesis is an ever-evolving product of the analytic collaboration that is subject to ongoing analysis and self-inquiry. Like any explanatory theory, it both opens and constrains interpretive possibilities. The collaborative attempt to arrive at the best possible explanatory narratives entails both uncovering and joint construction. Explanatory efforts that are anchored in consensually agreed-upon present experiences of resistances and transferences are more closely related to therapeutic action and are more likely to be verifiable than explanatory theories tied to distant past events. The open-ended nature of the life historical and explanatory narratives leads to an emphasis on continued self-analytic activities after termination.

[Life control, the core of being healthy. Theoretical-empirical definition of the concept "life control"].

In this article the concept 'life control' is being analysed and defined. A need to define the concept 'life control' emerged during a research that deat with a human being's descriptions being healthy. 'Life control' turned out to be the central category and the main concept organising the whole data. The data were collected by focused interviews (N = 60). Those interviewed represented five different styles of 'life control'. One of these styles that were discovered in the research was chosen as the basis of the conceptual analysis. This style was characterised by 'laissez faire' attitude towards life. Hybrid model was used as the theoretical frame of reference in the conceptual analysis. Thorough study of Finnish and foreign literature about 'life control' leads into an explicit definition of 'life control' describing the data collected by focused interviews: 'Life control' is an individual's basic belief concerning the possibilities to control the course of human life and the extent of this control. An individual either controls his/her life quite independently and completely or only to a certain extent, or it is controlled by factors beyond the influence of a human being. The definition of the 'life control' -concept in the sense that it displays basic beliefs should be examined by studying people's way of thinking with the help of interviews, essays, questionnaires or analysis of autobiographies.

[Long-term administration of lithium carbonate: experience based on a case of 25-year-long treatment with lithium].

In the beginning of 1960s, initial reports appeared pointing to a possibility of preventing depressive and manic recurrences in affective illness by means of long-term administration of lithium salts. Subsequent several years of controlled studies confirmed such prophylactic effect of lithium in affective illness beyond any doubt. Some patients in whom lithium administration was started in the beginning of 1970s may, by now, have received lithium for more than twenty years. The patient reported in the present paper, had began lithium treatment on April 1, 1971, after her third depressive episode since 1965. During 25 years of uninterrupted lithium carbonate administration in daily dose 1000 mg (for 5 years-750 mg) and with mean serum lithium concentration 0.6 mmol/l, the recurrences have not been observed, mental status was normal and professional (physician-ophthalmologist) and family functioning was good. Either somatic or mental side-effects have not occurred. Twenty five years of the patient's lithium treatment, was paralleled by important events for lithium therapy such as, i.a., autobiographies of prominent persons receiving lithium for porphylactic purposes, definition of a new category of psychotropic drugs (normothymic) with lithium as a prototype, establishing some mechanism of lithium action on intracellular transmission, discovery of antiviral and immunomodulatory effect of lithium as well as finding of decreased mortality of patients receiving long-term lithium therapy.
