Evolutionary characterization and expression profiling of ACC and FASN genes in Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis.

Acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and fatty acid synthase (FASN) are rate-limiting enzymes in the fatty acid biosynthetic pathway, yet their evolutionary relationships, sequence features, and expression profiles remain poorly understood in crustaceans, particularly in the economically important Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). Here, we identified and systematically analyzed ACC and FASN genes in E. sinensis using comparative genomic analyses across 43 species. ACC was highly conserved as a single-copy gene in invertebrates, in contrast to the multiple paralogs observed in vertebrates. Similarly, FASN was generally maintained as a single-copy gene across most taxa but exhibited lineage-specific expansion in certain insect groups. Phylogenetic and structural analysis revealed strong conservation of both genes within crustaceans, supported by multiple conserved motifs and canonical functional domains. Expression profiling showed predominant expression in the hepatopancreas and midgut, suggesting their potential involvement in crustacean lipid metabolism. During the molting cycle, ACC and FASN exhibited higher expression levels during stages C and D, suggesting an increased capacity for fatty acid biosynthesis before molting. In addition, dietary lipid levels experiment revealed that ACC and FASN expression responded dynamically to dietary lipid availability, with increased expression at moderate lipid levels but reduced expression under excessive lipid supplementation, indicating a possible adaptive transcriptional response to lipid status. Collectively, this study provides insights into the evolutionary conservation and expression dynamics of ACC and FASN and improves our understanding of lipid metabolic adaptation in crustaceans.

Impact of education protocols and physiotherapeutic management in improving pain, symptoms, activities of daily living, and quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis is a debilitating condition of the knee joint and the major cause of disability globally, with an increased economic burden on healthcare. Patient education (PE) has emerged as a primary care treatment approach in chronic conditions. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PE along with exercise in reducing pain, alleviating symptoms, improving activities of daily living, and promoting quality of life among individuals with knee osteoarthritis. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted across three electronic databases, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and PEDro. The search was limited to between 2020 and 2025, and included only randomized controlled trials. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool and the PEDro Scale were used to evaluate the methodological evidence. Statistical synthesis was analysed using mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) under a random-effects model. RESULTS: Eight trials were included, of which four studies evaluated the four Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) domains, and three studies evaluated the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and KOOS activities of daily living domain in patients with knee osteoarthritis. For the meta-analysis, we assessed all five domains of the KOOS scale and VAS. Statistical analysis of the studies showed a significant reduction in pain (VAS) for the PE along with exercise group (MD = -3.28, 95% CI (-4.85; -1.70), and I2 = 69.6%), but there was no significant improvement in the domains of the KOOS scale. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the importance of PE along with exercise in reducing pain. It might not be more effective when compared with exercise therapy as a standalone intervention in improving ADLs, QoL, and symptoms, but it has demonstrated some degree of effectiveness. It additionally promotes self-management and self-efficacy as a physiotherapeutic rehabilitation treatment intervention.

Proteomic profiling reveals that DPP4 overexpression increases cell adhesion, inhibits cell migration, and restores androgen sensitivity in prostate cancer.

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4), a serine protease with both enzymatic and non-enzymatic roles, has emerged as a context-dependent modulator of tumor progression. In the present study, we investigated the expression and function of DPP4 in androgen-sensitive and castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) models. Proteomic analysis of androgen-resistant prostate cells overexpressing DPP4 identified the involvement of the cellular adhesion molecules pathway. In prostate cells, lentiviral-mediated DPP4 overexpression restored androgen receptor signaling, inhibited epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, and reduced cell migration, whereas DPP4 silencing produced the opposite effects. We demonstrate that DPP4 expression is down-regulated in CRPC cells and that treatment with capsaicin (CAP), a bioactive compound derived from red peppers, restores DPP4 expression. Moreover, DPP4 restoration by CAP suppresses prostate tumorigenesis in the TRAMP mice in vivo model of prostate cancer. Our results suggest that DPP4 could be a new target for CRPC.

Autophagy activation in granulosa cells as a mechanism of astaxanthin action: evidence from a pilot randomised trial in PMOS-associated infertility.

Astaxanthin (AST) has been reported to influence oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and apoptosis in women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), formerly referred to as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but its effects on granulosa-cell (GC) autophagy remain unclear. Given the central role of autophagy in follicular development, this triple-blind, placebo-controlled pilot randomised trial evaluated whether AST modulates autophagy-related signalling in GCs and how these molecular effects relate to ovarian response. Fifty women with PMOS-related anovulatory infertility were enrolled between November 2023 and September 2024 and received AST (12 mg/day) or placebo for six weeks prior to oocyte retrieval; forty-four completed the study (21 AST, 23 placebo). Primary exploratory endpoints were molecular markers of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-autophagy signalling, and primary clinical outcomes included ovarian response indicators and cleavage stage embryo quality. AST supplementation increased autophagy-related gene 7 (ATG7) expression, enhanced autophagy flux, reduced apoptosis, and showed a trend toward increased AMPK activation. Before adjustment, AST improved oocyte maturity rate (OMR) and increased mature (metaphase II; MII) oocyte yield. After adjusting for age, body mass index, and anti-mullerian hormone level, total oocyte and MII oocyte yields remained significantly higher with AST, while OMR became non-significant. Among embryology outcomes, both the top-ranking embryo rate and the number of embryos suitable for cryopreservation were significantly higher with AST after adjustment. Pregnancy outcomes were numerically higher but not statistically significant. This pilot trial suggests that AST activates autophagy- and apoptosis-related pathways in GCs and may enhance oocyte competence and embryo quality in PMOS. Larger studies are needed to confirm these mechanistic and clinical effects.

Domestication-associated reduction of methyl salicylate in tomato root and its significance for resistance to root-knot nematode.

Methyl salicylate (MeSA) plays diverse roles in the aerial parts of plants. By contrast, its biosynthesis and function in roots remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated root MeSA biosynthesis and function in tomato. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were performed using root MeSA levels as the phenotype in a diversity panel of 167 accessions to identify associated loci. Candidate genes were biochemically characterized, and the role of MeSA in defense against root-knot nematode (RKN, Meloidogyne incognita) was evaluated using transgenic plants. MeSA was identified as a major root volatile in tomato and showed a domestication-associated reduction. GWAS revealed multiple loci associated with natural variation in root MeSA, including a major locus on Chromosome 9 encoding the salicylic acid methyltransferase (SlSAMT). SlSAMT-overexpressing plants showed reduced resistance to RKNs, whereas SlSAMT-knockdown plants exhibited enhanced resistance. Our results suggest complex roles of MeSA and the salicylic acid (SA) signaling pathway in belowground plant defense. The SA signaling pathway likely plays critical roles in protecting roots against diverse natural enemies, including RKNs. Nevertheless, RKNs appear to have co-opted MeSA as a host-location signal, and the domestication-associated reduction of root MeSA in tomato has likely contributed to enhanced resistance against RKNs.

Natural deep eutectic solvent in situ formation-based extraction method coupled to high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection for multiclass carbohydrates in hot pot bases.

A novel method was developed for the simultaneous extraction of fourteen multiclass carbohydrates from high-fat foods via the in situ formation of deep eutectic adducts from analytes and acetate ions. Different natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) composed of fructose and organic acids were tested as extraction solvents. A model NADES formulated with sodium acetate and fructose was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. The critical extraction parameters were systematically optimized using multi-response surface methodology (MRSM) with a central composite design (CCD). The extract was analyzed using high-performance anion-exchange chromatography coupled with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) using a sodium hydroxide-sodium acetate eluent, which did not require organic solvents. This approach exhibited good linearity over the concentration range of 0.02-10 mg L-1, with correlation coefficients (r) ranging from 0.9994 to 0.9999. The limits of detection and quantification were in the ranges of 0.06-0.42 mg kg-1 and 0.19-1.3 mg kg-1, respectively, which were significantly lower than those of liquid chromatography (LC). The protocol was successfully applied to the determination of fourteen carbohydrates in forty-five hotpot seasoning samples. The recoveries ranged from 86.3% to 104.1%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.9-7.1%. By integrating multiple techniques, this strategy simplifies operations, shortens extraction time, and achieves baseline separation of three carbohydrate classes that exhibit poor resolution using a conventional LC method. This study describes an efficient procedure for the simultaneous determination of multiple trace-level carbohydrates in complex samples using HPAEC-PAD.

Efficacy and Safety of the C3 Inhibitor Pegcetacoplan in Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the complement C3 inhibitor pegcetacoplan in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched for studies reporting pegcetacoplan use in PNH. Outcomes included transfusion-requirement, hemoglobin normalization, mean hemoglobin levels, lactate dehydrogenase normalization, reticulocyte count normalization, and safety endpoints. Pooled proportions with 95% confidence intervals were calculated using random-effects models, and heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. RESULTS: Five studies comprising 271 patients were included. Transfusion avoidance was observed in 80.6% of patients, with a pooled transfusion-requirement rate of 19.4%. LDH normalization occurred in 68.5% of patients (I2 = 0%). Hemoglobin normalization was observed in 42.9%, while reticulocyte count normalization reached 66%. Any-grade adverse events occurred in 83.5% of patients, most commonly pyrexia, headache, and dizziness. Serious adverse events occurred in 16.6%, decreasing to 12% after sensitivity analysis. Breakthrough hemolysis was reported in 14.8%, and infections in 17%. CONCLUSION: Pegcetacoplan demonstrates consistent efficacy signals across key hematologic endpoints and an acceptable safety profile, supporting its potential role as an important therapeutic option, particularly in patients with persistent extravascular hemolysis despite C5 inhibition.

Metabolic ketosis attenuates NLRP3 inflammasome activation and is associated with improvements in hepatic steatosis and liver stiffness in MASLD: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is increasingly recognized as a systemic metabolic-inflammatory disorder in which metabolic stress and innate immune activation, particularly through the NLRP3 inflammasome, contribute to disease progression. Metabolic ketosis, characterized by increased levels of circulating ketone bodies, especially β-hydroxybutyrate, has emerged as a promising strategy to modulate substrate utilization, inflammatory signaling, and hepatic injury. However, clinical evidence integrating molecular, metabolic, and hepatic outcomes remains limited. METHODS: In this pilot randomized controlled trial, 20 participants with newly diagnosed MASLD were randomly assigned to either a 3-month intervention with a daily C8-enriched medium-chain fatty acid formulation (m-CAP; meta-Capridin, providing approximately 20 g/day of C8) or a standardized low-carbohydrate dietary protocol. Metabolic indices, inflammatory mediators, adipokines, and hepatic enzymes were assessed. The expression of key inflammasome components (NLRP3, caspase-1, and ASC) was evaluated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and hepatic steatosis and liver stiffness were measured via transient elastography. RESULTS: The C8-enriched intervention was associated with increased circulating β-hydroxybutyrate levels, indicating the achievement of nutritional ketosis. Changes over time were observed in metabolic parameters, including fasting serum glucose (p < 0.05), HOMA-IR (p < 0.05), body fat percentage (p < 0.05), and BMI (p < 0.05). Alterations in inflammatory mediators and adipokine-related outcomes were also observed following the intervention. At the molecular level, changes in inflammasome-related markers were detected, including caspase-1 mRNA expression (p < 0.05) and NLRP3 expression at the transcriptional (p < 0.05) and protein levels (p < 0.01), whereas ASC expression remained unchanged. Changes in hepatic steatosis (p < 0.01) and liver stiffness measurements were observed following the intervention. Given the absence of significant Group × Time interactions for several secondary outcomes, these findings should be interpreted as exploratory and hypothesis-generating. CONCLUSIONS: Induction of metabolic ketosis was associated with changes in metabolic, inflammatory, and hepatic parameters in patients with MASLD. The observed associations between ketosis, inflammasome-related markers, and noninvasive liver outcomes warrant further investigation of ketosis-based interventions as adjunctive approaches in MASLD. Larger and longer-term clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings and to determine whether short-term changes in liver stiffness reflect sustained alterations in hepatic status rather than structural fibrosis regression. Emerging Principles in Spatial Functional Genomics.

Spatial transcriptomic and proteomic atlases have enabled mapping of gene programs within intact tissues, but these measurements remain largely descriptive and do not define the mechanisms controlling tissue biology. Pooled CRISPR screening provides scalable causal interrogation of gene function but remains largely confined to dissociated systems that lack spatial context. In vivo spatial functional genomics (SFG) bridges these approaches by integrating genetic perturbations with in situ transcriptomic and proteomic readouts to measure gene function within intact tissue ecosystems. By preserving spatial organization, SFG enables interpretation of perturbations through effects on cell-cell interactions, diffusible signals, multicellular niches, and tissue architecture. Here, we outline key design axes of SFG: perturbation strategy, barcoding strategy, and phenotypic readout. We discuss computational challenges, including spatial autocorrelation, neighborhood dependence, and context-aware null modeling, and highlight how SFG reveals non-cell-autonomous, architecture-dependent mechanisms of gene function, advancing toward predictive models of tissue organization and gene function.

Comparative Effectiveness of Oral Ivermectin, 1% Permethrin Shampoo, and 4% Dimethicone Liquid Gel in Treatment of Pediculosis Capitis among School Children in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand.

Pediculosis capitis remains a persistent public health issue, especially in developing countries where resistance to standard neurotoxic pediculicides like permethrin is increasingly prevalent. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of alternative treatment options against the standard care in a resource-limited setting. We conducted a single-blind randomized controlled trial involving three primary schools in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT06332872). Eighty-five female participants ages 6-13 years with active infestations were enrolled. Schools were randomly assigned to three treatment arms: 1) oral ivermectin (200 µg/kg) on Days 0 and 7; 2) 1% permethrin shampoo on Days 0 and 7, or 3) 4% dimethicone liquid gel as a single dose on Day 0. The primary outcome was the cure rate, defined as the absence of live lice and viable nits upon clinical assessment on Day 9. Of the 66 participants included in the final per-protocol analysis, oral ivermectin achieved a cure rate of 95.5% (21/22), which was significantly higher than that of the 1% permethrin standard of care (37.0%; 10/27) and the 4% dimethicone physical suffocant (29.4%; 5/17) (P <0.001). Although dimethicone achieved high initial parasitic clearance on Day 0 (88.2%), a rapid reinfestation rate of 58.8% was observed by Day 9, indicating that a single-dose protocol may be clinically insufficient. Adverse events were mild and temporary across all groups. Oral ivermectin appears significantly more effective than both 1% permethrin and single-dose 4% dimethicone in this population. These findings suggest that permethrin resistance is clinically prevalent and relevant in this area.

Exploratory identification and cellular functional characterization of ppiabl as a candidate gene associated with growth traits in Paralichthys olivaceus.

The Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is an important mariculture species. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying its growth traits remain poorly understood. To explore the genetic basis of growth variation, whole-genome resequencing was performed in a cultured cohort of 60 individuals, followed by exploratory genome-wide association analysis and candidate-gene prioritization. The results revealed heritability estimates of 0.40 for body weight and 0.24 for body length, with substantial overlap in associated loci between the two traits. Exploratory association and variant-annotation analyses prioritized ppiabl, which carries a nonconservative missense variant, as a candidate gene for further investigation. Tissue expression analysis showed that ppiabl was highly expressed in muscle tissue. This gene encodes a protein belonging to the conserved peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase family. In Japanese flounder primary muscle cells, ppiabl knockdown was associated with altered expression of growth-related genes and an increased G1-phase fraction, whereas overexpression produced changes in the opposite direction. In line with this, fast-growing individuals were found to have significantly larger muscle fiber areas than slow-growing ones. These findings suggest that ppiabl may be involved in muscle-related cellular processes associated with growth variation in Japanese flounder, although its contribution to whole-animal growth requires further validation. Overall, this exploratory study prioritizes ppiabl as a candidate gene potentially associated with growth-related cellular processes in Japanese flounder, although validation in larger independent populations and in vivo models is required.

Five-year outcomes in a randomised controlled trial of prolonged exposure therapy and supportive counselling for post-traumatic stress disorder in adolescents: a task-shifted intervention.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavioural therapies with a trauma focus are effective in reducing posttraumatic stress disorder and other psychological distress in adolescents. Long-term follow-up data on adolescents treated for PTSD remain scarce, with few studies extending beyond 12 months after treatment completion. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the maintenance of treatment gains in a comparative study of effectiveness of PE-A and SC up to 60 months post-treatment. METHOD: Sixty-three adolescents diagnosed with PTSD were randomly assigned to either treatment, provided by newly trained and supervised non-specialist health workers. The primary outcome measure was PTSD symptom severity, as independently assessed on the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS). We report on the 60-month post-treatment follow-up, building on post-treatment, 3-month, 6-month, 12-month and 24-month post-treatment data that have been published previously. RESULTS: Participants in both treatment groups maintained a significant reduction in PTSD symptoms up to 60-months post-treatment (F (7, 343) = 2.86, p < .01). Participants receiving prolonged exposure experienced greater improvement on the CPSS at all follow-up assessment timepoints, except for the 60-month FU (p = .28; g = 0.33). CONCLUSION: Adolescents with PTSD continued to maintain treatment gains up to 60-months post-treatment. These data, along with findings from the original RCT, indicate that a brief treatment protocol (averaging 9 sessions of PE-A or SC) in a LMIC, task-shifted to be delivered by nurses without prior psychotherapy experience, led to lasting improvements in PTSD and comorbid symptoms for up to five years. The sustained benefits and improved functioning over the first few years post-treatment support expanding both treatments, especially PE-A, in community settings.

New insights into soil amendment: Impact of humic acid on typical antibiotic resistance in agricultural soil.

Humic acid (HA) addition can improve agricultural soil, but little is known about how it affects the soil resistome. In this study, we used selective agar plate combined with quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to investigate how HA influences antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in soil contaminated with erythromycin and kanamycin. 0.1 % HA reduced the abundance of culturable erythromycin-resistant bacteria (ERB), while promoting the growth of kanamycin-resistant bacteria (KRB). Lysinibacillus and Paenibacillus were the dominant genera in ERB and KRB, respectively, governing the changes in their abundances. At this concentration, the Lysinibacillus abundance in ERB decreased from 96.74 % to 70.57 %. Meanwhile, that of Paenibacillus in KRB increased from 33.40 % to 77.44 %. The copy number of ermF decreased after HA addition, while that of ermB increased. Furthermore, 0.1 % HA significantly reduced the copy number and relative abundance of aadA1 and aac(6')-Ib (aka aacA4)-03 in the soil. Changes in these two types of ARB and ARGs were primarily driven by shifts in the microbial community structure. Soil physicochemical properties, particularly increased organic matter (OM), altered the absolute abundance of ermB. Meanwhile, changes in intI1 abundance determined the risk associated with aadA1 and aac(6')-Ib (aka aacA4)-03. These findings emphasize the dual role of HA in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance in agricultural soils and highlight the necessity of considering dose-dependent effects when applying HA as a soil amendment.

Serotypic and Genomic Diversity of Vibrio anguillarum in Rainbow Trout Farms in Turkey: Implications for Vibriosis Control and Vaccine Candidate Selection.

Outbreaks of vibriosis caused by Vibrio anguillarum are a persistent constraint on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aquaculture. However, information on the population structure of field strains in Turkey has been lacking. Here, we report the first systematic serotypic, proteomic, and genomic characterization of 23 V. anguillarum isolates collected over 10 years from rainbow trout farms located in six major aquaculture regions of Turkey. Serological analyses based on microagglutination, supported by ELISA characterization of hyperimmune sera, identified a clear predominance of serotype O1, whereas isolate V12 exhibited a non-agglutinating, atypical O-antigen profile. Protein profiling (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting showed largely conserved whole-cell protein patterns among the isolates, but distinct immunogenic bands at 14, 18, and 40 kDa were detected in isolates V18 and V21. Long-read whole-genome sequencing revealed that most Turkish isolates grouped within the global O1 clade, while V12, V25, and V28 isolates occupied more distant branches. Comparative genomics demonstrated a conserved core virulence gene set (RTX toxins, siderophore and iron-uptake systems, motility and adhesion factors, Type VI secretion system), with strain-dependent variation in accessory loci such as anguibactin and T6SS-I. Experimental infections of rainbow trout demonstrated significant differences in virulence among isolates (p < 0.05), with the V18 isolate showing high, the V15 intermediate, and the V12 low-mortality rates. By elucidating the relationship among the serotype, immunogenic protein profiles, virulence gene repertoires, and in vivo pathogenicity, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the antigenic and genomic diversity of Vibrio anguillarum isolates from Turkey. Notably, the identification of V18 and V21 as promising candidate strains for further vaccine evaluation, characterized by high virulence and unique immunogenic features, provides a scientific foundation for the development of serotype-specific vaccination strategies to mitigate vibriosis-associated losses in aquaculture.

From pathobiology to prescribing in obesity-driven HFpEF: A systematic review and practical therapeutic framework.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is increasingly driven by obesity and cardiometabolic dysfunction. In this phenotype, the dominant biology extends beyond congestion alone and includes visceral and epicardial adiposity, systemic inflammation, impaired myocardial energetics, endothelial dysfunction, and exertional elevation in filling pressures. We performed a PRISMA-compliant systematic review with structured narrative evidence synthesis to evaluate pharmacological therapy in obesity-driven HFpEF, searching PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, ClinicalTrials.gov, and WHO ICTRP through December 2025. Eighteen reports were included in the final qualitative synthesis. The available evidence supports sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors as the pharmacological foundation because they provide the most mature outcome data across the preserved ejection fraction spectrum. Semaglutide improves symptoms, physical limitations, exercise capacity, and body weight in dedicated obesity-related HFpEF trials, whereas tirzepatide extends this signal by improving clinical status and reducing worsening heart failure events. Finerenone broadens the therapeutic platform in HF with mildly reduced or preserved ejection fraction, although obesity-specific data remain indirect. Conventional neurohormonal therapies retain a selective role, but they are not the principal biological match for this phenotype. Obesity-driven HFpEF should therefore be managed as a cardiometabolic syndrome with heart failure expression, using a phenotype-based sequence that links diagnosis, decongestion, SGLT2 inhibition, obesity-directed therapy, and selective adjunctive intensification.

Diagnostic Value and Limitations of Dermoscopy in Humans and Animals: A Critical Comparative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dermoscopy is a noninvasive imaging technique that is well-established in human dermatology, where it enhances the diagnosis of neoplastic, inflammatory, infectious, and alopecic skin disorders. In veterinary dermatology, its use is expanding yet remains heterogeneous and largely descriptive, despite growing evidence of conserved dermoscopic patterns across species. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To review the applications of dermoscopy in veterinary dermatology, and to provide a comparative analysis of dermoscopic features observed in dogs, cats, and horses in relation to corresponding findings in human dermatology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature reporting dermoscopic findings in veterinary dermatology was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched for studies published up to 30 July 2025. Eligible studies included original articles describing dermoscopic features in dogs, cats, or horses. Extracted data included species, dermatological condition, dermoscopic findings, device type and histopathological correlation, when available. Levels of evidence were assessed using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine criteria. RESULTS: Thirty studies met the inclusion criteria. Most were descriptive case reports or case series. Dermoscopy was applied to a wide range of conditions, including alopecias, parasitic infestations, dermatophytosis, neoplastic and sebaceous lesions, inflammatory dermatoses, and congenital vascular anomalies. Recurrent dermoscopic features showed strong similarities to those described in human dermatology, although species-specific anatomical differences influenced interpretation. CONCLUSIONS: Dermoscopy represents a valuable adjunct diagnostic tool in veterinary dermatology, with clear translational relevance. Standardisation of terminology and further prospective studies are required to support its broader clinical integration.
