[The relationship between abiotic factors and microbial activities of microbial eco-system in contaminated soil with petroleum hydrocarbons].

By means of the biostimulation and bioaugmentation in the micro-ecological environment of contaminated soil with petrochemical hydrocarbons, the biodegradation rates and mode of the contaminants were significantly improved. Based on the investigations carried out in some oilfields and petrochemical industrial area of Northern China, the relationship between the abiotic factors such as nutrient, pH, contaminants, water content, alkalinity, etc., and microbial activities was interpreted and identified in this paper. The results from the investigations and indoor and in-situ experiments conducted recent years indicated that the soils in the areas, to the extent, have been polluted by the different kinds of organic compounds composed of monoaromatic benzene, PAHs, chlorinated solvent, and alkanes, and the concentrations of the compounds mostly were elevated as compared to the background, with the highest 34,000 mg/kg dry soil. The column chromatography analysis results showed that the alkyl and aromatic compounds were accounted for more than 50% of the total hydrocarbon contents, which was readily degraded by degrading bacteria and improved the degrading microbe activities. The effective nitrogen and phosphorus encountered in the soil was less than 30 mg/kg dry soil and 10 mg/kg dry soil, only about 5% of total contents of them respectively. Based on the stoichiometric calculation and reasonable ratio of carbon to nutrient content regarding the biodegradation of organic compounds, the nutrient levels mainly composed of nitrogen and phosphorus in polluted soil as importantly limiting factors to degrading bacterial growth and activity were insufficient to the biodegradation of petrochemicals, and it is needed to add the nutrient for the bioremediation of contaminated soil. It is undoubted that the optimization of abiotic factors play significant role in increasing the microbial activity and improving the biodegradation rates.

Transitory disturbances in growing lactating rabbits after transient doe-litter separation.

To determine the effect of a transient doe-litter separation (48 h) on milk production and feed intake from 1 to 21 days post-partum, a control group (C) in which litters had free access to nursing, and a biostimulated group (B) in which litters were separated from their does from d 9 to d 11 post-partum were used. Total milk production was higher in (C) than in (B) does (5090+/-1.1 g vs. 4593+/-150 g, P < 0.05). On days 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the lactation period, milk production was 40% (P < 0.0001), 18% (P < 0.05), 15% (P < 0.05), and 15% (P < 0.01) higher in (C) than in (B), respectively. No significant differences were observed in feed intake during the period studied (7961+/-352 g in (C) does, and 7834+/-329 g in (B) does). After fasting, 11-day-old kits showed lower gut weight, body weight, empty stomach relative weight (RW), stomach content RW and small intestine RW (P < 0.05), but the differences disappeared at 21 days of age. A reduction in villous height (P < 0.065) was observed in separated kits at 11 days old compared to 9- and 11 -day-old control kits (579.0+/-28.4 vs. 664.64+/-27.6, and 724.33+/-24.1 microm, respectively), but no differences were observed at either 16 or 21 days of age. Specific jejunal lactase activity increased significantly in 11-day-old separated kits (P < 0.05). A significant increase in sucrase activity at 21 days in both groups (P < 0.05) was detected. In conclusion, a fasting period of 48 h at 9 days of age does not compromise the subsequent development of certain digestive parameters of young rabbits.

Histoarchitectonics of the fetal thymus. A three-dimensional model study.

Comparative studies on three-dimensional models give new possibilities in examination of the internal and external evolution of the thymus, phenomena that occur concomitantly with the histogenesis of the organ during the fetal life period. During the antenatal period, the invasion and burgeoning of capillaries represent a strong potential of biostimulation with a special role in organizing and determining thymus lobulation.

[The influence of a low- and high-frequency electromagnetic fields on seeds].

It was shown that the exposure of seeds in the rest phase to a low-frequency pulse electromagnetic field leads to substantial changes in seed physiology during germination. The changes at the physiological level in sprouting seeds depend not only on the frequency of the external EMF and its power characteristics but also on the kind of seeds. Low- and high-frequency electromagnetic fields are able to produce a biostimulation effect; however, the mechanisms of its appearance are different in their nature. The biochemical studies of seeds after EMF treatment in the modes resulting in expressed biological effects showed an increase in the activity of alpha-amylase, which testifies an increase in the gibberellin output and in the activity of the hydrolytic enzyme sour phosphatase. The response of seeds to EMF treatment demonstrates the possibility of electromagnetic control of growth processes.

[The biological effects and criteria for assessing the danger of laser radiation].

Biological effects of laser radiation (LR) are determined by the absorption properties of the irradiated tissues and physiological characteristics of radiation. The high intensities of the effect are accompanied by melting, evaporation, substance ionization, formation of shock and acoustic waves. Under the action of the low-intensity LR there prevail photochemical, photobiological and thermal processes. The action of LR of one or another wave length is determined by the initial stages of its interaction with biological substrate. The biostimulating action of LR is widely used in clinical medicine. On the contrary, the effects that give rise to morphofunctional lesions of biological tissues determine the necessity of elaborating preventive measures ensuring protection of man from LR. It is generally accepted that thresholds of the damaging action on the retina and skin may be used as the main criterion for maximum allowable level (MAL) basing. In addition to the changes observable in the directly irradiated tissues, many authors point to a possibility of functional disturbances on the part of certain organs and systems of the body, followed by the formation of asthenic and vegetovascular syndromes. The experimental and clinical data confirm that the body may develop common nonspecific changes which, together with the local damaging effects, can be regarded as criteria for an adverse action of LR and, therefore, taken into account in MAL derivation.

Gene expression profile of bovine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell during spontaneous chondrogenic differentiation in pellet culture system.

Bovine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) cultured in condensate culture, spontaneous and independent for any external biostimulants, undergo chondrogenic differentiation. In the present study, the bovine MSC chondrogenesis pathway was studied by analyzing stage-specific gene expression using quantitative "Real Time" reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Results showed that bovine MSCs underwent complete chondrogenesis; the initial stage was characterized by expression. of sox9 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), followed by high transcription of chondrocyte specific genes, collagen type II and IX, biglycan and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein, and the final prehypertrophic and/or hypertrophic stage was distinguished by increased expression of collagen type X. From day 7 to day 14 of differentiation increased mRNA expression of the transforming growth factors beta1 and beta2, basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF 2), bone morphogenic protein 6 (BMP 6), insulin-like growth factors 1, parathyroid hormone related peptide and indian hedgehog (Ihh) were detected. These results suggest that these well know chondrogenic growth factors may play a role in bovine chondrogenesis in autocrine and/or paracrine manner. On day 21 of the culture, FGF 2, BMP 6 and Ihh were highly expressed, compared to cells cultured in monolayer manner, which suggests a possible function in maintaining the terminal stage of differentiation. This data extends our knowledge about the unusual species-specific bovine MSC chondrogenesis, allowing us to define the phenotype of the differentiated cells. Furthermore, this study contributes to our in understanding of known chondrogenic-growth factors in autocrine and/or paracrine manner playing a role in the spontaneous differentiation.

[The venous ulcer therapy in use of the selected physical methods--circumstances for clinical application].

Venous ulcers are significant both surgical and dermatological problem. The chronic and recurrent natures of the disease require a search for new methods to improve treatment efficiency. Therefore, the attempts at using some physical methods are needed. The authors review the current literature on characteristics and biological effects of high voltage stimulation (HVS), ultrasound (sonotherapy) and laser biostimulation. Modern hypotheses (skin battery theory, cavitation, acoustic streaming, fotobiostimulation effect) explaining the mechanisms of applied physical factors arising in soft tissue healing process are presented too.

Bone necrosis of the jaws associated with bisphosphonate treatment: a report of twenty-nine cases.

Bone necrosis of the jaws is often related to head and neck radiotherapy, to surgical procedures at maxillary or mandibular level but also to various local and systemic factors such as haematological diseases, haemoglobinopathies and systemic lupus eritematosus; its pathogenesis maybe associated with defects of vascularization. Bisphosphonate are synthetic analogues of pyrophosphate used for the treatment of hypercalcemia in patients with malignancies and bone metastasis and for the treatment of many other disorders such as metabolic bone diseases, Paget's disease, and osteoporosis; their pharmacological activity is related to the inhibition of the osteoclastic function which leads to resorption and reduction of bone vascularization. Since the end of 2003 Bisphosphonate-associated Osteonecrosis (BON) has become an increasing problem and the test of that is the increase of the relative published case report and case series. Here we report 29 cases of bone necrosis of the jaws in patients treated with pamidronate (Aredia), zoledronate (Zometa) and alendronate: 15 underwent surgical procedures and 14 occurred spontaneously. Among these patients (21 females, 8 males; mean age between 45 and 83 years); 14 were treated for bone metastasis, 12 for multiple myeloma and 3 for osteoporosis. Bone necrosis involved only maxilla in 7 patients, only mandible in 20 patients and both in 2 patients. Six patients had multiple osteonecrotic lesions, 3 contemporary lesions and 3 non contemporary. In these patients we performed 3 kinds of therapy, associated or not: medical therapy (with antibiotic drugs, antimycotics and antiseptic mouthwashes), surgical therapy with curettage or sequestrectomy and Nd:YAG laser biostimulation.

[Immunomodulation in patients with cavernous kidney tuberculosis using piperazine adipinate and amniocene].

Findings of a complex immunologic examination of 138 patients with active cavernous tuberculosis of the kidneys concurrent with secondary immunodeficiency are presented. Biostimulators and immunomodulating drugs were administered as conservative treatment in this case. Changes in cellular and humoral immunity indices as well as those of the mononuclear-phagocyte system before and after treatment were traced in the groups of patients receiving biogenic stimulators (such, as aloe extract, vitreous body, plasmol, Fibs) and immunoregulating drugs (like piperazine adipinate and injected amniocene). It was found that the biogenic stimulators fail to have a pronounced effect on the immunologic indices. The inclusion of piperazine adipinate and injected amniocene into a complex of antibiotic and chemotherapy brings about a significant improvement of the cellular immunity indices and the mononuclear-phagocyte system function which are inhibited to a greater extent in patients with active destructive nephrophthisis. A recommended use of piperazine adipinate and amniocene as adjuncts to a complex treatment has been proved in patients of this category by means of clinicoimmunologic correlations.

Modulation of anticancer drug toxicity by solcoseryl.

The studies of the effect of solcoseryl on toxicity of selected anticancer drugs were performed in mice. The observed differential influence of solcoseryl was dependent on the type of anticancer drug as well as on the schedule of solcoseryl administration. The protective effect of the biostimulator was noticed exclusively against 5-FU toxicity. The results of our studies could provide possible implications for therapeutic approach.

Morphology of epithelizing varicose ulcers following He-Ne laser therapy.

The present study is a report on the morphological, particularly ultrastructural findings in the newly formed epidermis of varicose ulcerations after a series of irradiations with a low energy He-Ne laser. The ultrastructural alterations are interpreted as most probably conditioned by the biostimulating effect of the radiation and they are compared with the results obtained by other investigators studying these problems and with findings in the epithelium of embryonal epidermis as well as in the epidermis exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

[Correction of immunologic deficiency in experimental tuberculosis and chronic effect of pesticides].

The paper deals with the findings of comparative morphologic and immunologic studies of immunomodulatory therapy for experimental tuberculosis on chronic exposure to pesticides (alpha-3) of 117 guinea pigs receiving decaris (levamisole), as an immunostimulator, and "mumiyo-acil", as a biostimulator. The specific features of every pathogenetic drug's effect on the tuberculous inflammation morphology, cellular-tissue reactions, cellular immune response and repair processes were defined. An optimum effect in the treatment of the pesticide-induced experimental tuberculosis can be achieved by the use of anti-bacterial drugs and "mumiyo-acil".

[Reaction of the adrenal glands to laser puncture during combined effects of ionizing radiation].

In experiments in mature female guinea pigs it was shown that a combination of external X-radiation (12.9 mC/kg) and incorporated 131I (6.5 mCi/kg) induced morphohistochemical changes in the adrenals at remote times (6 months) which indicate the state of the organ functional tension. Laser biostimulation in these conditions promotes a transition of the process of cell hyperfunctioning to the depletion and functional deficiency.

[Biogenic amines and cyclic nucleotides in the laser therapy of long-term nonhealing stomach ulcers].

A study is presented of the effect of copper vapors laser therapy on the content of biogenic amines--serotonin and histamine and the state of adenylcyclase (AC) system (content of cAMP, cGMP and AC activity) at the edge of the gastric ulcer. Direct effect of laser radiation (single dose 10--15 J.) produced a significant increase of serotonin, histamine, cAMP, AC activity and an insignificant increase of cGMP. Healing of the ulcerative defect after 5--6 laser therapy sessions was followed by a reduction of the content of serotonin, increase of histamine, cAMP and AC activity. The authors discuss the biostimulating effect of laser radiation by influencing the inflammatory-proliferative processes in the epitheliocytes in prolonged nonhealing gastric ulcers.

[Experience with the surgical treatment of Perthes' disease].

In the article are analyzed the results of treatment of 16 children with Perthes disease. There is given clinico-roentgenologic substantiation of surgical treatment. The authors concluded that the surgical methods of treatment of children with Perthes disease of the II-III degree are the principal ones. The developed procedure of surgical intervention integrates the methods of intervention which were earlier applied by many authors and includes: correcting intertrochanteric detortion-variative osteotomies of femur, tunneling and biostimulation of neck and epiphysis of femoral head by allogenic osseous matrix and cortical transplants, by administration of chemotrypsin into epiphysis, decompression of hip joint with subsequent restorative-conservative treatment. Complex treatment allows 2-3-fold reduction of the terms of treatment of patients with good anatomic and functional results, prevents development of secondary hip joint deformations.

[Laser in periodontology: theoretical-experimental approach. 3. Experimental study of the effects of He-Ne (638 nm) and infrared diodic (904 nm) lasers on the gingival mucosa of rats].

Medical and surgical laser-therapy is becoming more and more important in various branches of Medicine, however independently from clinical results still very little is known about physical-biological interaction between laser beam and living matter. The aim of this study is of finding tissutal and cellular effects of stimulation with soft and mid laser. The study started from an original work carried out at the Institute of Biology of the 1st Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Naples University from which appears the possibility of visualizing the stage of nuclear active synthesis of the cell, simply by Maloory tricromic colouring. By this method the cellular nucleuses take, usually, a red colour, however in presence of an increase of the RNA nuclear synthesis the nucleuses take a typical blue colour. The importance of the study induced us to research the presence in the oral mucose of the rat after radiation as an effect of biostimulation. The results of this study showed and increase of the epithelial cheratine and a variation of the disposition and of the number of the precheratine grains in treated site. The blue nucleuses have been found at the basal level without any difference between treated and control site. On the other hand their presence is the normal consequence of the epithelial evolution which starts from the basal level which is the most active in the stage of nuclear synthesis.
