[reaction: see text] To isolate a transition state model compound of an in-plane vinylic S(N)2 reaction, vinyl bromide 6 bearing a newly synthesized tridentate ligand derived from 1,8-dimethoxythioxanthen-9-one (5) was prepared as a precursor. Although irradiation of 6 gave demethylated benzofuran 12, a transient broad peak which indicates formation of the desired transition state model compound was observed in the laser flash photolytic study.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel is a kind of material which has excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. In this paper, the researches and developments of PVA hydrogel preparation and the modifications of PVA with other material were introduced. The potential for the use of PVA hydrogels as implant materials in cartilage reparation was reviewed.
The Rh(II)-catalyzed coupling of chiral 2-thiopyranylindoles with vinyl diazoacetates results in the generation of indolines having quaternary substitution at C3 in high diastereoselectivity.

Reactions between vinyl sulfilimines and dichloroketene generated in situ from trichloroacetyl chloride in the presence of zinc-copper couple give mixtures of alpha-dichloro-gamma-butyrolactams and alpha-dichloro-gamma-butyrolactone imines. Fine-tuning of substituents within vinyl sulfilimines results in reactions with good chemoselectivity and yield for lactams.
The reactions of several aryl-, furanyl-, and vinyl-substituted sulfilimines with dichloroketene proceeded at 25 degrees C to yield thioalkyl-substituted gamma-lactams. The overall process involves nucleophilic addition of the nitrogen atom of the sulfilimine onto the highly electrophilic dichloroketene to first generate a zwitterionic intermediate. A subsequent [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement is followed by intramolecular trapping of the Pummerer cation by the amido anion to furnish the observed gamma-lactam product. Incorporation of donor groups on the aromatic ring of the sulfonyl functionality had little effect when aryl-substituted sulfilimines were used but exhibited a major effect on the efficiency of the reaction with furanyl-substituted systems. The placement of an electron donor group (i.e., OMe) on the sulfonyl aryl group enhances the nucleophilicity of the amido anion contained within the sulfonium ion intermediate and facilitates the rate of the 3,3-sigmatropic rearrangement. Styryl-substituted sulfilimines cyclize in a stereospecific manner and produce a 3:2-mixture of gamma-lactams and the isomeric imino-lactone system. The heavily functionalized gamma-lactams are easily converted to a variety of nitrogen containing substrates. The vinyl sulfilimine cyclization method was applied to the total synthesis of the Calabar alkaloid (+/-)-desoxyeseroline.
Vinyl sulfoniums were synthesized from vinyl sulfides by methylation, and inhibited the proteolytic enzyme papain. Inhibition studies suggest a mechanism by which the vinyl sulfonium inhibitor covalently and irreversibly modifies the enzyme.
4-Nitrophenyl vinyl ether (NPVE) and phenyl vinyl ether (PVE) administered i.p. in mice lowered hepatic non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH) content, but did not elevate the serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) activity. n-Butyl vinyl ether (BVE) showed no significant effects either on the NP-SH content or on the serum GP activity. Mice pretreated with buthionine sulfoximine were sensitive to the potential toxicity of NPVE. These results showed that aryl vinyl ethers, NPVE and PVE, are more toxic than the alkyl vinyl ether, BVE, and that glutathione plays an important role on the protection of hepatic injury by reactive metabolite(s) derived from vinyl ethers.
[reaction: see text] Radical-mediated silyl- and germyldesulfonylations of various vinyl and (alpha-fluoro)vinyl sulfones with tris(trimethylsilyl)silane and germanium hydrides provide access to vinyl and (alpha-fluoro)vinyl silanes and germanes. Upon oxidative treatment with hydrogen peroxide in basic aqueous solution, the vinyl tris(trimethylsilyl)silanes and -germanes undergo Pd-catalyzed cross-couplings with aryl halides.
The development, application, and advantages of a one-flask multicomponent dithiane linchpin coupling protocol, over the more conventional stepwise addition of dithiane anions to electrophiles leading to the rapid, efficient, and stereocontrolled assembly of highly functionalized intermediates for complex molecule synthesis, are described. Competent electrophiles include terminal epoxides, epichlorohydrin, and vinyl epoxides. High chemoselectivity can be achieved with epichlorohydrin and vinyl epoxides. For vinyl epoxides, the steric nature of the dithiane anion is critical; sterically unencumbered dithiane anions afford S(N)2 adducts, whereas encumbered anions lead primarily to SN2' adducts. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that the SN2' process occurs via syn addition to the vinyl epoxide. Integration of the multicomponent tactic with epichlorohydrin and vinyl epoxides permits the higher-order union of four and five components.

Protected alpha-formyl amino acids, themselves available from the corresponding alpha-vinyl amino acids, are stereoselectively transformed into the (Z)-configured alpha-(2'-fluoro)vinyl amino acids via a three-step sequence. The route employs McCarthy's reagent, diethyl alpha-fluoro-alpha-(phenylsulfonyl)methyl phosphonate, and proceeds via the intermediate (E)-alpha-fluorovinyl sulfones and (E)-alpha-fluorovinylstannanes. The latter may either be exploited as novel cross-coupling partners for fluorovinyl branch extension or be globally deprotected, to provide the title compounds. [structure: see text]
The comparative study of irreversible inhibitory action of some substituted vinyl-phosphates (in usual and betaine forms on cholinesterases from different biological sources such as the human blood erythrocytes, the horse and the hen blood serum and optic ganglia of the squid) has been carried out. It is shown that betaines obtain lesser inhibitory activity as compared with the corresponding ordinary vinylphosphates. Some of tested inhibitors display expressed selectivity of action. So, the compound GL-2 reacts with cholinesterase of optic ganglia of the squid 450 000 times faster than with cholinesterase of the hen blood serum. The application of vinylphosphates as inhibitors of cholinesterases allows displaying additional differences in properties of enzymes. It is very important for comparative enzymology. These compounds may be used for detalization of type belonging and to make the classification of cholinesterases more accurate. Moreover, the estimation of anticholinesterase activity of vinylphosphates is important because these compounds may be used both in medicine and agriculture.
