We report a case of intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis associated with hemolytic anemia. While the paravertebral localization of the lesions demonstrated on CT and MRI was suspicious of intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis, In-111 chloride and Tc-99m Sn colloid bone marrow scintigraphies showing a bone marrow element of the lesion were useful to confirm the diagnosis.
Promotion by Lewis acid of the addition of some aryllithiums to a carbohydrate-based imine, which has allowed a more facile synthesis of some imino-C-nucleoside analogues, is described. Use of the corresponding nitrone does not assist in some cases, but lithiated acetonitrile adds to it efficiently to give a product from which further C-nucleoside analogues can be derived.

Embryonal carcinoma of the ovary in a 17-year-old Saudi girl with complete situs inversus is reported. According to reports since 1936, this is the sixteenth case of cancer associated with complete situs inversus, the second ovarian cancer, the first embryonal carcinoma of the ovary, and the youngest cancer case to be reported in association with this congenital anomaly.
The intrahepatic distribution of radioactivity after the per-rectal administration of 201T-chloride and/or 99Tcm-pertechnetate was investigated in 177 studies in 149 patients with no liver disease or diffuse liver disease and compared with that of 99Tcm-stannous (99Tcm-Sn) colloid scintigrams. The patients were classified into two groups: distribution of intrahepatic radioactivity of 201Tl and/or 99Tcm-pertechnetate scintigrams similar to (homogeneous) or different from (heterogeneous) that of 99Tcm-Sn-colloid scintigrams. The heterogeneous group was divided into three subgroups: increased radioactivity of the right lobe (right dominant pattern), increased radioactivity of the left lobe (left dominant pattern) and uneven distribution of radioactivity in both lobes (uneven pattern). Of the 80 patients in whom the studies were performed in the supine position at rest, 14 (17.5%) showed a heterogeneous pattern (8 right dominant, 4 left dominant, 2 uneven) and 66 (82.5%) a homogeneous pattern. In the 97 patients allowed free body movement, 6 (6.2%) showed a heterogeneous (1 right dominant, 5 left dominant) and 91 (93.8%) a homogeneous pattern. A significant difference in the incidence of heterogeneous distribution between the resting and free body movement groups was found (P < 0.05). One patient with a left dominant pattern after free body movement with 201Tl showed a right dominant pattern at rest in the 99Tcm-pertechnetate study. It is concluded that a heterogeneous intrahepatic distribution of inferior mesenteric vein blood is sometimes observed and that the distribution of portal vein blood flow seems to be affected by the patient's positioning and free body movement.
Correlation between gastric emptying time measured by a radioisotope method and plasma acetoaminophen level was studied in 11 preoperative early gastric cancer in semisolid meal. A significant correlation was found between both gastric emptying half-time and plasma acetoaminophen level at 30, 45 minutes after ingestion of meal, and plasma acetoaminophen level at maximum. We conclude that acetoaminophen analysis is useful to measure gastric emptying at semisolid meal.

We have studied the effect of tri-phenyl tin benzimadazolethiolcopper chloride (TPT-CuCl(2)), a novel bimetallic compound, on the regulation of apoptosis in HeLa cells, MCF-7 cells, and in vivo Wistar rat model. TPT-CuCl(2) induces significant apoptosis in HeLa cell line characterized by DNA fragmentation and chromosome condensation. Comet assay revealed that TPT-CuCl(2) targets and causes severe damage to the DNA. Treatment of HeLa cells with TPT-CuCl(2) rescues the accumulation of p53 from the suppression of human papilloma virus E6, resulting in a dramatic up-regulation of Bax and Bak and down-regulation of the antiapoptotic factor Survivin. Apoptotic induction by TPT-CuCl(2) was shown to mediate in a p53-depedent manner; loss of p53 impairs the release of cytochrome c and Smac/DIABLO from mitochondria to cytosol. Moreover, we have shown that TPT-CuCl(2) induced-apoptosis was through an intrinsic mitochondrial pathway, which was inhibited by viral oncoprotein E1B19K. Caspase-3 was found to be indispensable in TPT-CuCl(2)-triggered apoptosis signaling pathway, because caspase-3 deficient cell line MCF-7 was resistant to TPT-CuCl(2). Furthermore, in vivo studies using C6 glioblastoma xenograft rat model revealed that TPT-CuCl(2) exhibits significant antiproliferative activity against tumor development with minimal cytotoxicity toward normal physiological function of the experimental rats. These findings imply the attractiveness of TPT-CuCl(2) as a drug candidate for further development.

Metalorganic and quarternary ammonium compounds when added to culture medium inhibited growth of Aspergillus niger mycelium and activity of neutral and alkaline phosphatase. A quarternary ammonium compound, ethonium, and a tin-organic compound, tributyl oxide, exerted an inhibiting effect on activity of acid phosphatase which amounted to 54% of the total phosphatase activity in mycelium and 94% in the culture liquid. The rest of biocides induced lysis of intracellular membranes, phosphatase release from lysosomas, which made acid phosphatase activity higher. Being introduced into the mycelium homogenate the above compounds inhibited activity of the acid phosphatase. The same biocides inhibited extracellular acid phosphatase in the culture liquid. Recommendations are given on the use of a number of substances as means for protection of industrial materials from biolesions.

Indium-111 oxine labelled leucocyte (111In oxine leucocyte) scintigraphy is the test of choice in detecting occult infection and localising focal inflammation. 111In oxine labelling is technically difficult and expensive and leucocyte labelling with technetium-99m stannous colloid (99mTc Sn colloid) has been considered to be an alternative. Leucocytes from 40 cases referred for investigation of occult infection or localisation of inflammation were simultaneously labelled with 111In oxine and 99mTc Sn colloid with dual isotope acquisition performed at 1, 3 and 24 h. Twenty-four hour 99mTc Sn colloid scans were corrected for 111In downscatter. Each case was independently interpreted by two experienced observers. Twenty-one patients demonstrated positive 111In oxine leucocyte scans. Using 111In oxine leucocyte scans as the gold standard, 99mTc Sn colloid leucocyte scanning had an overall sensitivity of 86% and a specificity of 95%. Clinical follow-up verified that three patients had false negative 99mTc Sn colloid leucocyte scans and one patient had a false positive. Further clinical evaluation of 99mTc Sn colloid labelled leucocytes is required before they can become a reliable replacement for 111In oxine leucocytes.
