A risk-need-responsivity (RNR)-informed systematic review of needs during the pretrial period.

OBJECTIVE: Pretrial risk assessments are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Despite the importance of assessing and intervening around "needs" in the risk-need-responsivity model, few pretrial risk assessments include comprehensive assessment of needs. We aim to provide a systematic review of the prevalence of and predictive utility of needs within the pretrial population. HYPOTHESES: There were no hypotheses given the nature of the study. METHOD: We conducted searches for articles in the EBSCO, ProQuest, and Google Scholar databases using key words related to 11 needs domains: antisocial personality, procriminal attitudes, procriminal associates, substance use, family/marital relationships, school/work, prosocial recreational activities, self-esteem, housing, mental health, and physical health. We identified 215 articles that reported on the prevalence of needs or explored their predictive associations with pretrial misconduct outcomes in adult populations. RESULTS: Overall, we find few comprehensive investigations of needs in the pretrial domain, apart from substance use. Variation in methodology and operationalization contributes to wide variability in prevalence estimates. We found only 15 articles that examined predictive associations between pretrial needs and outcomes, which were limited to investigations of behavioral health, employment, and housing needs. Substance use and housing needs emerged as the only consistent predictors of pretrial misconduct. CONCLUSIONS: Researchers should more directly assess the prevalence and predictive utility of needs within the pretrial period to bolster the evidence base for including these factors in pretrial risk assessments. Assessment and CommuniCation ExcelLEnce foR sAfe paTient outcomEs (ACCELERATE): A stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial evaluating the effectiveness of a nurse-led assessment and handover communication intervention on patient adverse events.

BACKGROUND: Patients continue to experience harm from undetected deterioration, falls and pressure injuries. We aimed to implement and evaluate an organisational, ward-level nurse-led assessment and communication intervention to proactively reduce patient adverse events. METHODS: A stepped-wedge cluster randomised Trial over 12-months was conducted at three metropolitan hospitals. Our intervention comprised a comprehensive, systematic patient assessment at shift commencement; a structured patient-centred bedside nurse-to-nurse clinical handover; and multidisciplinary communication consisting of nurse participation in medical ward rounds. Evidence-based implementation strategies informed intervention delivery to nine clusters (20-35 bed-wards with ≥70% permanent nurses) over three sequential 14-week steps. Routinely collected patient-level data were used to measure intervention effect. The primary outcome was a composite measure of medical emergency team calls, unplanned intensive care unit admissions, in-hospital falls; and stage 2-4 pressure injuries. Secondary outcomes were: individual measures of the primary outcome; nurse-reported perceptions of safety culture; organisational readiness to change; barriers to physical assessment; staff engagement; and patient-reported experience measures of safety and overall hospital experience. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, hospital, pre/post intervention, and Trial step (fortnight), with random effects for ward and patient. RESULTS: There were 13,753 eligible admissions. No change was observed in the primary composite outcome measure (odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 0.99 [0.77, 1.28]; p = 0.95). There was no significant difference in medical emergency team calls (OR [95% CI]: 1.02 [0.75, 1.39]; p = 0.91); unplanned intensive care unit admissions (OR [95% CI]: 1.35 [0.57, 3.20]; p = 0.50) and falls (OR [95% CI]: 1.53 [0.96, 2.45]; p = 0.07). However, stage 2-4 pressure injuries significantly decreased by 41% (OR [95% CI]: 0.59 [0.38, 0.93]; p = 0.02); a significant absolute effect improvement of 0.8% ([95% CI: 0.3%-1.3%], p < 0.01). There were statistically significant improvements in nurses' overall perceptions of Safety Attitudes (Pre: 74.6, Post: 79.7; p = 0.02), and the Organisational Readiness to Change subscales of, leader culture (Pre: 3.73, Post 3.91; p = 0.02), leadership behaviour (Pre: 3.85, Post: 4.11; p = 0.03), and general resources (Pre: 3.06, Post: 3.30; p = 0.03). A statistically significant decrease in Barriers to Physical Assessment (Pre: 2.48, Post: 2.24; p <0.001) and in six of seven sub-scales was observed. Patients' overall Measure of Safety remained high, but unchanged (Pre: 3.94 Post: 3.92; p = 0.07). CONCLUSION: The ACCELERATE Trial demonstrated that nurse-driven initiatives, emphasising structured physical assessments by nurses, patient-centred clinical handovers, and multidisciplinary communication, significantly: reduced pressure injuries; decreased nurses' perceived barriers to performing physical assessments; and improved leadership behaviour, communication, and ward safety culture perceptions. Results highlight the transformative potential of this approach, which now warrants testing at scale for broader implementation. Watershed-scale risk assessment of cadmium contamination in Chinese cropland soils: Dual pathways of irrigation input and flood-driven transport.

Irrigation and flood events serve as critical pathways for the transport of cadmium (Cd) from industrial sources into cropland soils at the watershed scale, constituting a major driver of widespread Cd contamination in China's cropland soil. This study evaluated the risk of Cd contamination in cropland soils across China's nine major river basins at the watershed scale, focusing on the contributions of irrigation and flood events, and conducted a sensitivity analysis of key risk factors. The assessment was conducted within a framework that considered factors including hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. The results revealed that numerous watersheds in southeastern China are exposed to dual pressures of Cd contamination risks in cropland soils, driven by both irrigation practices and flood events. Watersheds categorized as High-High, High-Moderate, or Moderate-High risk, reflecting combined Cd contamination risks from irrigation and flood, are vital to China's grain production, contributing 67.1 % of the national cropland area and 66.4 % of the grain yield. The study suggests localized strategies for managing cropland soils Cd contamination risks from irrigation and flood at the watershed scale in China, alongside strengthened cross-regional collaboration in southeastern China.

Embedding cardiovascular risk assessment into routine BTK inhibitor management in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular (CV) toxicities remain a major challenge during Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor (BTKi) therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Selecting the optimal BTKi based solely on a history of overt CV disease may underestimate underlying cardiovascular vulnerability. AREAS COVERED: We performed a targeted, non-systematic review of PubMed and MEDLINE to examine the association between baseline CV comorbidities and BTKi-related CV toxicities in CLL. Current evidence indicates that preferential use of BTKis with more favorable CV safety profiles, coupled with appropriate cardio-oncology surveillance, reduces the risk of CV adverse events in patients with pre-existing CV disease. In patients without established CV disease, the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation 2 (SCORE2) and SCORE2-Older Persons (SCORE2-OP) may help identify clinically meaningful latent CV risk, enabling early optimization of modifiable risk factors in line with the proactive cardiovascular management strategy endorsed by the 2026 European Hematology Association (EHA) CLL guidelines. EXPERT OPINION: A structured, risk-adapted approach integrating standardized CV risk assessment, early management of modifiable risk factors, individualized BTKi selection, and multidisciplinary cardio-oncology collaboration may improve the safety and tolerability of BTKi therapy in CLL. Pending prospective validation, SCORE2 and SCORE2-OP should complement, rather than replace, dedicated cardio-oncology evaluation.

Real-time intraoperative perfusion assessment using indocianine green in pediatric extrinsic ureteropelvic junction obstruction with crossing vessel.

INTRODUCTION: In vascular hitch (VH) particular attention must be paid to preserving lower pole perfusion. Hypoperfusion is normally excluded by macroscopic visual assessment of parenchyma appearance. Our aim is to explore the possible role of indocyanine green (ICG) in highlighting focal hypoperfusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included pediatric patients with UPJO caused by crossing vessels, treated with robot-assisted VH. Intraoperative evaluation assessed UPJ appearance, reduction of hydronephrosis after vessel mobilization, and the adequacy of pelvic drainage during diuretic testing. ICG was used to assess renal perfusion via NIRF imaging. A 25 mg ICG solution was prepared in 10 mL and administered in 1 mL doses. Fluorescence distribution, operative time, and complications were recorded. Follow-up at 3, 6, and 12 months included clinical evaluations, blood pressure measurements, and Doppler ultrasound. RESULTS: Eight patients (median age 8years) were enrolled between October 2023 and February 2025. ICG assessed renal perfusion post-procedure; one case of focal hypoperfusion due to vessel tension was resolved with intraoperative revision. At a median follow-up of 18 months, no hypertension, pain, or UTIs were observed. Ultrasound demonstrated improved hydronephrosis and normal Doppler flow. CONCLUSION: ICG angiography is a safe and effective tool for the real-time assessment of renal perfusion during pediatric VH procedures.

Quantitative Outcomes for Shared Assessment and Management in Forensic Mental Health: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review.

Despite leading models of mental health care encouraging user involvement, users in forensic mental health (FMH) report poor involvement given the difficulty in reconciling shared approaches with risk-averse and legally mandated settings. While previous research has demonstrated qualitative benefits to shared approaches in FMH and has led to a proliferation of self-rated assessment tools, there remains to quantify agreement on self-rated tools and to clarify the impact of shared approaches on care. This meta-analysis examines (1) the correlation between clinician and user ratings, (2) the predictive validity of self-ratings for violence, and (3) the effects of shared risk management on violence and restriction in FMH. Five databases were searched from inception to April 2024, selecting for adult FMH inpatients, shared risk assessment, needs assessment or violence management as interventions, and quantitative outcomes (correlation, agreement, predictive validity, and effect on violence or restriction rates). Fifteen quantitative evaluations were retained. One of three planned meta-analyses could be conducted, with seven records providing paired clinician-user t-tests. Eleven more records provided clinical recommendations on operationalizing shared approaches. Random-effects meta-analysis showed a significant and large paired standard difference of .95 (95% CI = [.49,1.42]) across tools, with significant differences in DUNDRUM-3, DUNDRUM-4, and CANFOR sub-models. While acknowledging between-study heterogeneity, results substantiate quantitative differences where clinicians generally rate more needs and lesser progress than users across tools, showing that self-ratings can and should be used to broach collaborative discussions on needs and progress during FMH treatment. There remains an evidence gap for quantitative benefits in care outcomes and a need to standardize agreement measures for future comparisons and clinical sub-group analyses.

Comparison of summative assessments between simulated electronic health records versus traditional paper-based patient cases: A non-inferiority randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic health records are fundamental to contemporary pharmacy practice, yet evidence supporting their use in pharmacy education is lacking. This single-center, non-inferiority randomized controlled trial with blinded outcome assessment evaluated whether delivering patient cases via a simulated academic EHR (aEHR) was non-inferior to a traditional paper-based format in student exam performance. METHODS: 53 third-year PharmD students at the University of British Columbia were randomized 1:1 to complete a mock summative examination using either the aEHR or paper-based case delivery, stratified by self-reported EHR comfort level. The primary outcome was mean written exam score (%). Non-inferiority was pre-specified at a margin of 14%. Adjusted linear regression was used for the primary analysis, with a multiple imputation sensitivity analysis. Student perceptions were explored through post-exam focus groups analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: 42 students (21 per group) completed the exam and were included in the primary analysis. Mean scores were 66% (SD 11) in the aEHR group and 68% (SD 10) in the paper group. The adjusted mean difference (paper minus aEHR) was -2.2% (95% CI -9.2% to +4.8%), satisfying non-inferiority but not superiority. Sensitivity analysis (n = 53) yielded consistent results (-2.3%; 95% CI -7.1% to +4.1%). Focus groups revealed initial student anxiety with the aEHR but recognized its alignment with clinical practice. DISCUSSION: These findings support the feasibility of integrating simulated EHRs into summative pharmacy assessments without compromising performance. CONCLUSION: Simulated EHRs are a non-inferior assessment medium compared with paper-based formats and represent a viable step toward technology-driven pharmacy practice environments.

Assessing perinatal depression identifying abilities among maternal and child health workers in rural China using smartphone-based virtual patients: a multi-center cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess rural maternal and child health (MCH) workers' virtual patients (VPs)-assessed performance in identifying perinatal depression (PND) using smartphone-based VPs, and to identify factors associated with this performance in rural Hunan, China. METHODS: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted in Hunan Province, China. A standardized questionnaire collected demographic and work-related characteristics of rural MCH workers. Smartphone-based VPs were used to assess PND identification performance in a simulated clinical scenario. An overall score ≥60 was used as a prespecified operational benchmark across consultation, ancillary assessment, diagnosis, management, and health education domains. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0. RESULTS: A total of 375 rural MCH workers participated, yielding an effective response rate of 90.4%. Only 25.9% met the prespecified operational benchmark for VP-assessed PND identification performance. The mean accuracy scores for consultation, ancillary assessment, diagnosis, management, and health education were 94%, 48%, 64%, 58%, and 74%, respectively. Complete consultation accuracy was higher among MCH workers from township health centers than among those from county-level MCH hospitals. MCH workers aged 18-39 years showed higher odds of complete diagnostic accuracy for PND than those aged ≥40 years. CONCLUSIONS: Smartphone-based VP assessment was feasible in rural MCH settings and revealed suboptimal PND identification performance. Mobile VPs may help identify frontline performance gaps and inform targeted training, but further validation against real-world clinical performance, or standardized patient encounters is needed before large-scale implementation. These findings may support targeted capacity-building for rural MCH workers and more equitable perinatal mental health care.

Assessing the Concurrent Validity of the Australian Treatment Outcomes Profile in a Methamphetamine Dependent Treatment-Seeking Population.

INTRODUCTION: The Australian Treatment Outcomes Profile (ATOP) is a brief clinical tool assessing substance use, health and well-being used in Australian alcohol and other drug treatment services. It is validated for use with clients using alcohol, opioids and cannabis, but not yet for clients who primarily use methamphetamine. METHODS: An embedded validation study was undertaken in treatment-seeking adults enrolled in a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial of lisdexamfetamine for methamphetamine dependence with sites in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. Participant demographics were collected during study screening. The ATOP and comparators (Time Line Follow Back, Opiate Treatment Index, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, WHOQOL-BREF and Personal Wellbeing Index) were collected at baseline. Continuous ATOP items were analysed using Pearson's correlation coefficient, and dichotomous items were analysed using Fleiss's κ. Agreement was rated as strong where measures were ≥ 0.50, moderate where agreement was 0.30-0.49, and weak where < 0.30. RESULTS: One hundred and eighteen study participants (2018-2020) had data for concurrent validity analysis. Strong validity was demonstrated for physical health, psychological health, quality of life, injecting drug use and crime items, and for days of use for amphetamines, alcohol, cannabis and cocaine. There was weak validity for days of use for benzodiazepines. Heroin use days and other opioid use days were endorsed by fewer than five participants and were therefore unable to be assessed. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The ATOP is valid for use in a treatment-seeking methamphetamine-dependent population, expanding the range of tools for assessment and standardised outcome monitoring across different settings and services.

Intraoperative indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence imaging for assessing testicular viability in pediatric testicular torsion: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence (ICG-NIRF) imaging versus conventional surgery for assessing testicular viability and guiding decision-making in pediatric testicular torsion (TT). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 225 pediatric patients undergoing emergency scrotal exploration for TT between January 2019 and January 2025. Patients were categorized into a conventional surgery group (n = 118) relying on visual grading and an ICG-NIRF imaging group (n = 107). Primary outcomes included intraoperative testicular preservation rates and postoperative success rates. Multivariate Cox regression was utilized to identify factors influencing testicular preservation. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups. The ICG-NIRF group demonstrated a significantly higher intraoperative preservation rate (74.77% vs. 61.02%, p = 0.028) and postoperative success rate (88.75% vs. 69.44%, p = 0.003) compared to the conventional group. Additionally, the ICG-NIRF group exhibited significantly lower rates of secondary orchiectomy (1.25% vs. 9.72%, p = 0.027) and 6-month testicular atrophy (7.59% vs. 23.08%, p = 0.02). Multivariate analysis confirmed ICG-NIRF application as an independent protective factor for testicular preservation (HR = 0.556, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: ICG-NIRF imaging provides an objective, real-time assessment of testicular perfusion, significantly improving testicular preservation rates and postoperative outcomes. This technique overcomes the subjectivity of conventional visual methods, offering substantial clinical value for fertility preservation in pediatric TT.

Implementation of Mobile Health Intervention Targeting Belongingness and Burdensomeness: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study of Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors in LGBTQ+ Individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this paper was to test a mobile health intervention designed to reduce self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in LGBTQ+ individuals. The intervention consisted of brief messages aimed at increasing feelings of belongingness and meaning. METHOD: We recruited LGBTQ+ individuals (N = 55) with past-month self-injurious thoughts and/or behaviors. Participants completed 14 days of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of minority stress, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors. Then, participants were randomly assigned to receive brief messages designed to instill belongingness and meaning/purpose, or no intervention for 14 days. Then, participants completed an additional 14 days of EMA. RESULTS: Our results showed that participants in the control condition had significant increases in self-injurious thoughts and planning over time, whereas those in the intervention condition showed no significant change. For self-injurious behavior, thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness, there were significant decreases in the intervention condition, but no changes in the control condition. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide support for the interpersonal theory of suicide and indicate a potentially scalable mobile health intervention. PUBLIC HEALTH SIGNIFICANCE: This paper found evidence that a brief mobile health intervention reduced suicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious thoughts and behaviors among LGBTQ+ individuals.

How to assess different types of abstract concepts in brain disorders: A systematic review.

The clinical evaluation of semantic knowledge has predominantly relied on tools targeting concrete concepts, whereas abstract knowledge has historically received limited attention despite its importance in everyday communication. Only a few instruments have explored the internal subdivision of abstract knowledge, likely due to the intrinsic difficulty of defining specific types of concepts or dimensions, resulting in a fragmented and heterogeneous neuropsychological assessment framework that limits our understanding of this domain. This systematic review examined the tools used to assess various types of abstract concepts in clinical populations. A literature search has been performed on the electronic databases of PubMed and Google Scholar (last update: October 2025). A total of 17 tests is reviewed, differing in the test characteristics, i.e. ranging from automatic to controlled processes and varying in ecological validity, the type of stimuli employed, and the abstract dimensions explored. Most studies have focused on neurodegenerative patients, while comparatively few have examined other clinical conditions. The risk of bias of the reviewed studies was assessed using an ad hoc developed instrument. This review highlights the need for future research to extend investigations to additional abstract domains and clinical populations, while also identifying key challenges related to stimulus selection and the determination of the most appropriate assessment framework.

Comprehensive source-risk assessment of organophosphate esters in surface water of the Dianchi Lake Basin, Yunnan, China.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers, have been increasingly detected in aquatic environments. However, investigations of their distribution in high-altitude plateau lakes remain scarce. Identifying and quantifying the sources and associated risks of OPEs are crucial for subsequent water environment management. In this study, an integrated source-risk analysis approach was employed by combining the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, the Geodetector (GD) model, and risk quotient (RQ). Analysis of 14 OPEs in surface waters of the Dianchi Lake Basin (DLB) revealed 12 detectable compounds, with total OPEs concentrations (ΣOPEs) ranging from not detected (ND)-64.6 ng/L during the wet season and ND-35.8 ng/L during the dry season. Elevated ΣOPEs were primarily observed at inflow sites in the northern part of the lake and in urban rivers. Source apportionment indicated four major contributing sources: agricultural films containing flame-retardant and plasticizer additives, traffic-related particulate emissions, releases from household and personal care products, and industrial production and applications of flame retardants in plastics, electronics, and related products (the predominant source). The ecological impact caused by OPEs ranges from no risk to low risk, with tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate emitted from industrial source being the primary driver of potential environmental risk. These findings highlight the necessity of prioritizing industrial sources in future management strategies. Overall, this study provides a methodological framework for source apportionment and risk assessment of OPEs and offers scientific evidence to support environmental management of OPEs in the DLB.

How prevalent is fear of cancer recurrence beyond 5 years: a systematic review of validated assessments across tumour types.

PURPOSE: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is an established challenge for cancer survivors. Research however has largely focussed early in treatment, with varying assessments and often single tumour sites. This systematic review set out to determine prevalence of FCR in survivors beyond 5 years across all tumour types. METHOD: We designed a search strategy to identify publications assessing FCR in survivors beyond 5 years with sample size greater than 50, using validated measures. Applying PRISMA methodology and with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria two authors independently assessed the studies for eligibility. Data extraction recorded number of participants, tumour type, study design, FCR tool, time points for assessment and reported prevalence. Risk of bias was assessed to address quality. RESULTS: Ten papers were included, reporting FCR from 5 years to beyond 20 years. Validated tools employed were FCRI-SF and FOP-Q-SF. Sample sizes ranged from 64 to 5983 participants, with a heterogeneous mix of tumour types and age. Only two studies reported longitudinal measurements. Prevalence of FCR above defined threshold ranged from 13 to 33.9% for those studies with acceptable risk of bias reporting distinct cohorts beyond 5 years. CONCLUSION: The limited evidence suggests that clinically relevant FCR persists in some survivors at 5 years. Our review demonstrates the challenge of heterogeneous patient populations in FCR research emphasising the need for improved consensus on measurements and more prospective longitudinal research representing a comprehensive variety of tumour types. We address the clinical implications of persistent FCR and the need to implement effective interventions.

Transcranial Photobiomodulation Variables Assessment Battery: Development and Validation.

Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) response variability is partly driven by biophysical characteristics such as skin tone and hair properties that attenuate photon penetration, and by lifestyle factors including sleep quality, alcohol use, and nicotine consumption that disrupt the mitochondrial and vascular pathways on which tPBM acts. To date, no validated self-report tool exists to capture these moderators systematically. To address this gap, the tPBM Variables Assessment Battery was developed and psychometrically evaluated. It integrates adapted versions of established measures (Brief Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, E-cigarette Dependence Scale, Hair Scale Assessment PRO, Monk Skin Tone Scale, and Heaviness of Smoking Index), validated wellbeing evaluators (Ryff's Psychological Wellbeing), and custom measures (Hairstyle Classification, Hair Color Classification). Face and content validity met recommended expert thresholds, internal consistency was acceptable across adapted subscales, and criterion validity analyses confirmed meaningful associations between the lifestyle components and PROMIS-10 global health outcomes. The battery is low-burden, digitally deployable, and psychometrically defensible, offering a practical tool for characterizing the variables most likely to moderate tPBM response in home-use studies.

Assessment of the Potential of Different Anthropometric Indices in Predicting the Risk of Diabetes and Associated Co-morbidities.

Diabetes, a chronic disorder, is showing a rapidly increasing trend globally. India holds the second position in the global diabetes epidemic. The present investigation is an assessment of different anthropometric measurements and their association with type 2 diabetes to determine their diagnostic potential for diabetes as well as its co-morbidities. In this cross-sectional study, we have measured anthropometric parameters and blood biomarkers in subjects with diabetes. We have presented the comparisons of cost- and time-effective anthropometric variable with costly and time-dependent biochemical variables in control and diabetic groups (n = 233/group). Correlations between anthropometric variables and biochemical measurements, as well as the diagnostic utility of anthropometric variables for diabetes, were evaluated. The diagnostic utility of anthropometric variables for diabetes was assessed through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Neck circumference, sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), skinfold thickness, and body roundness index (BRI) displayed high specificity and diagnostic utility for diabetes, emphasizing their potential in predicting diabetes and the further development of metabolic syndrome. The study highlights the importance of cost- and time-effective anthropometric assessments in diabetes risk evaluation and calls for further research to elucidate this intricate relationship and develop personalized management strategies.

Instruments to Assess Bidirectional Intimate Partner Violence: A Systematic Review.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health issue that affects individuals, families, and society in profound ways. Over the years, research has often shown that such IPV is predominantly one-sided, with men as perpetrators and women as victims. However, more recent studies have revealed that IPV is frequently bidirectional, with both partners potentially being victims, perpetrators, or both. Despite this growing awareness, little is known about the tools used to assess bidirectional violence (BV). This systematic review aims to synthesize the published scientific literature on the instruments used to assess bidirectional IPV among adult men and women. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a search was conducted across databases such as PubMed, B-on, Web of Science, and Scielo. Fifty studies published between 2012 and 2024 met the inclusion criteria. Most of the studies were conducted with community samples recruited through online questionnaires. The Conflict Tactics Scale emerged as the most used instrument for evaluating BV, demonstrating robust psychometric properties. BV prevalence rates ranged from 2% to 98.4% and remained generally consistent across different instruments, except in the case of male reports. However, the limited number of studies on interpartner agreements and the reliance on single-partner self-reports pose challenges to the accuracy of these estimates. While this systematic review provides a comprehensive overview of the instruments used to assess BV, it underscores the need for future research to develop more precise, context-sensitive tools, that incorporate reports from both partners to improve the accuracy of BV assessment.

Assessing the threat of Bacillus cereus: From toxin characterization to modern detection strategies.

Bacillus cereus is a spore-forming pathogen responsible for both diarrheal and emetic foodborne illnesses worldwide. Its significance in food safety has received growing attention. Recent advances, including the discovery of novel virulence factors and the development of emerging detection technologies, have provided new insights into its pathogenic mechanisms and surveillance strategies. This review critically examines the global burden of B. cereus infections, and molecular mechanisms of its major virulence factors, and the performance characteristics of current detection knowledge gaps such as the viable-but-non-culturable state and regulatory blind spots for emetic toxins, and discuss unresolved challenges in clinical management. By integrating epidemiological, microbiological, and technological perspectives with critical lens, this review aims to provide a valuable reference for future research and food safety practices.
