Formation and decomposition of ethane, propane, and carbon dioxide hydrates in silica gel mesopores under high pressure.

The experimental data on decomposition temperatures for the gas hydrates of ethane, propane, and carbon dioxide dispersed in silica gel mesopores are reported. The studies were performed at pressures up to 1 GPa. It is shown that the experimental dependence of hydrate decomposition temperature on the size of pores that limit the size of hydrate particles can be described on the basis of the Gibbs-Thomson equation only if one takes into account changes in the shape coefficient that is present in the equation; in turn, the value of this coefficient depends on a method of mesopore size determination. A mechanism of hydrate formation in mesoporous medium is proposed. Experimental data providing evidence of the possibility of the formation of hydrate compounds in hydrophobic matrixes under high pressure are reported. Decomposition temperature of those hydrate compounds is higher than that for the bulk hydrates of the corresponding gases.

Intensities of C-H IR stretching bands of ethane and propane adsorbed by zeolites as a new spectral criterion of their chemical activation via polarization resulting from stretching of chemical bonds.

Polarization of ethane and propane resulting from adsorption of these hydrocarbons by protons and different cations in mordenite, ZSM-5, and Y zeolites was studied by diffuse reflection Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Perturbation of adsorbed molecules by protons and sodium cations is weak, while positions of absorption bands for both these zeolites are very close to each other. In contrast, distributions of C-H IR stretching bands in intensities are somewhat different. This effect is pronounced much stronger for adsorption of light paraffins by bivalent alkaline earth and zinc cationic forms of these zeolites. Distribution of relative intensities of absorption bands strongly depends in this case both on the nature of cations and on the zeolites, while the most strongly perturbed vibrations are the initially fully symmetric C-H stretching vibrations. The corresponding low-frequency shifts and relative intensities of IR bands are increasing for different cations and zeolites in the following sequences: Na < Ca < Mg < Zn and Y < Mor approximately ZSM-5, while the difference in distribution of relative intensities of C-H stretching bands is pronounced much stronger than for the low-frequency shifts of these bands. Therefore, the relative intensities of IR C-H stretching bands are much better criterion of perturbation of light paraffins upon adsorption than the frequencies of these bands, which are traditionally used for this purpose. In addition, distribution of C-H IR stretching bands in intensity also provides unique information on anisotropy of polarizability of different C-H bonds created by their vibrations. For the acid and acid-base catalysis, where the main source of chemical activation arises from polarization of adsorbed molecules, such information is most important, while the anisotropy of polarizability provides a unique information on selective activation of different chemical bonds resulting from their stretching. The obtained results also demonstrate the possibility to use for testifying of the strength of Lewis acid sites instead of adsorption of the model molecular probes adsorption of the paraffins themselves.

Energy-flow dynamics in the molecular channel of propanal photodissociation, C2H5CHO --> C2H6 + CO: direct ab initio molecular dynamics study.

Direct ab initio molecular dynamics calculations have been carried out for the molecular channel of the photodissociation of propanal, C2H5CHO --> C2H6 + CO, at the RMP2(full)/cc-pVDZ level of ab initio molecular orbital theory. The initial conditions were generated using the microcanonical sampling to put the excess energy randomly into all vibrational modes of the TS. Starting from the TS, a total of approximately 700 trajectories were numerically integrated for 100 fs. The obtained final energy distributions for the C2H6 and CO fragments and their relative translational motion were found to be quite similar to those obtained for the acetaldehyde reaction, CH3CHO --> CH4 + CO, in our previous study (Chem. Phys. Lett. 2006, 421, 549) despite the fact that the number of degree of freedom for C2H6 is larger than that for CH4. The coupling between the intrinsic reaction coordinate and one of the generalized normal modes orthogonal to it was predicted substantially strong around s = 1.4 amu(1/2) bohr, and it is expected that the energy flow out of C2H6 proceeds through this coupling. However, the obtained energy distributions strongly suggest that the coupling among the modes in C2H6 is quite small and the intramolecular energy redistribution does not occur efficiently in this molecule.

Effect of polymer charge density and ionic strength on the formation of complexes between sodium arylamido-2-methyl-1-propane-sulfonate-co-acrylamide gels and cetylpyridinium chloride.

The effects of sodium chloride on the composition and structure of polyelectrolyte gel-surfactant complexes (PSCs) formed by the sodium salt of acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propane-sulfonic acid-co-acrylamide gels and cetylpyridinium chloride have been studied. At a low ionic strength of the solution, the composition of all the complexes is close to stoichiometric by charge. In the presence of 0.3 M sodium chloride, the composition of the complexes formed by the gel with 99 mol % charged groups is close to stoichiometric, while for the gel with 33 mol % charged monomer units, a nonstoichiometric complex with a high excess of the surfactant is formed. Further decrease of the charge density up to 10 mol % leads to partial or complete dissociation of the PSCs. The study of PSCs by the method of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) shows that the complexes formed by the gels with high and intermediate charge densities are highly ordered. The decrease of the charge density of the swollen networks at first leads to a change in symmetry of the ordered domains in the PSCs and then to their disordering. The formation of nonstoichiometric PSCs at a high enough concentration of salt is explained by the effect of fitting, when the packing of the surfactant and polymer components in the PSCs is improved due to the inclusion of extra surfactant molecules together with their counterions in the ordered domains.

Effects of (+)-1,2-bis(3,5-dioxopiperazin-1-yl)propane (ADR-529) on iron-catalyzed lipid peroxidation.

ADR-529 [(+)-1,2-bis(3,5-dioxopiperazin-1-yl)propane], a nonpolar, cyclic analogue of EDTA, protects against anthracycline cardiotoxicity in vivo. The protective mechanism presumably involves chelation of iron by a hydrolysis product of ADR-529, thus preventing the formation of reactive iron/oxygen species which can damage membrane lipids. We investigated the effects of ADR-529 and its hydrolysis products (the tetraacid and the diacid diamide) on NADPH- and ADP-Fe(3+)-dependent lipid peroxidation of rat liver microsomes and liposomes in the presence of cytochrome P-450 reductase. Hydrolyzed ADR-529 products caused inhibition of lipid peroxidation when in excess of the iron concentration. However, no inhibition of lipid peroxidation was detected by similar concentrations of nonhydrolyzed ADR-529. Microsomes did not affect the inhibition of lipid peroxidation, suggesting that rat liver microsomes do not hydrolyze ADR-529. Similarly, the diacid diamide hydrolysis product of ADR-529 inhibited ferritin- and adriamycin-iron-dependent liposomal lipid peroxidation in a concentration-dependent manner. No correlation between partially reduced oxygen species (O2.- and .OH; as measured by electron spin resonance) and lipid peroxidation (as assayed by malondialdehyde formation) was observed, suggesting that liposomal lipid peroxidation was strictly an iron-dependent phenomenon. These results suggest that inhibition of lipid peroxidation by iron chelation may be related to the protective effects of ADR-529 on in vivo anthracycline toxicity.

Determination of arsenic metabolic complex excreted in human urine after administration of sodium 2,3-dimercapto-1-propane sulfonate.

Sodium 2,3-dimercapto-1-propane sulfonate (DMPS) has been used to treat acute arsenic poisoning. Presumably DMPS functions by chelating some arsenic species to increase the excretion of arsenic from the body. However, the excreted complex of DMPS with arsenic has not been detected. Here we describe a DMPS complex with monomethylarsonous acid (MMA(III)), a key trivalent arsenic in the arsenic methylation process, and show the presence of the DMPS-MMA(III) complex in human urine after the administration of DMPS. The DMPS-MMA(III) complex was characterized using electrospray tandem mass spectrometry and determined by using HPLC separation with hydride generation atomic fluorescence detection (HGAFD). The DMPS-MMA(III) complex did not form a volatile hydride with borohydride treatment. On-line digestion with 0.1 M sodium hydroxide following HPLC separation decomposed the DMPS-MMA(III) complex and allowed for the subsequent quantification by hydride generation atomic fluorescence. Arsenite (As(III)), arsenate (As(V)), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA(V)), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA(V)), MMA(III), and DMPS-MMA(III) complex were analyzed in urine samples from human subjects collected after the ingestion of 300 mg of DMPS. The administration of DMPS resulted in a decrease of the DMA(V) concentration and an increase of the MMA(V) concentration excreted in the urine, confirming the previous results. The finding of the DMPS-MMA(III) complex in human urine after DMPS treatment provides an explanation for the inhibition of arsenic methylation by DMPS. Because MMA(III) is the substrate for the biomethylation of arsenic from MMA(V) to DMA(V), the formation of DMPS-MMA(III) complex would reduce the availability of MMA(III) for the subsequent biomethylation.

On the generation and outcome of 3-(N-phenylamino)propane-1,2-diol derivatives in deodorized model oils related to toxic oil syndrome.

Toxic Oil Syndrome (TOS) was a massive food-born intoxication that occurred in Spain in 1981 and affected more than 20,000 people. TOS was attributed to the ingestion of rapeseed oil that had been adulterated with aniline, illegally refined, and delivered for human consumption. Two chemical species derived from aniline have been identified in oil batches: fatty acid anilides, qualified as biomarkers of the adulterated oil, and fatty acid esters of 3-(N-phenylamino)propane-1,2-diol (PAP), considered toxic oil biomarkers. These esters were generated by chemical processes during oil refining, specifically in the deodorization step, which involves treatment of the oil at high temperatures under vacuum to remove volatile contaminants. Since PAP derivatives are strongly associated with TOS, their formation and putative interconversion in a toxic oil model has been studied. The main results obtained are (i) only triglycerides and aniline are required to produce PAP esters, thus eliminating the possibility that unknown activators present in the deodorization tank were required for toxification of the oil; (ii) PAP and PAP mono- and diesters are chemically interrelated, as are anilides and PAP esters to an even higher degree. In addition to the reaction of aniline with triglycerides, anilides can be also formed via attack of PAP esters by aniline. However, the most important source of anilides during deodorization seems to be the thermal decomposition of PAP esters. Overall, these results suggest that the generation and outcome of PAP derivatives during deodorization is a complex scenario whereby PAP esters are not only generated from different reactions but decompose to produce anilides, among other compounds. In addition to providing a rapeseed oil model that reproduces the composition of case oils with respect to anilides and PAP derivatives, the results presented herein further support the hypothesis imputing PAP diesters or their metabolites for the intoxication episode.

Controlled crystallization of mixed-ligand complexes of 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane-N,N'-dioxide with metal(II) thiocyanates: isostructurality in coordination networks bearing different mono- and di-nuclear nodes.

The new flexible spacer ligand 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane-N,N'-dioxide forms three classes of isomorphous compounds with metal(iI) thiocyanates at controlled ligand-metal molar ratios, and its mu3-O,O,O' mode leads to a pair of coordination networks having the same (4, 4) topological characteristics but different mono- and di-nuclear nodes.

In vitro and in vivo stability investigations of Cu(II), Zn(II), Ca(II) and Gd(III) complexes with N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyiminopropionyl) propane-1,3-diamine.

Formation constants of copper(II), zinc(II), calcium(II) and gadolinium(III) with N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyiminopropionyl) propane-1,3-diamine (L2) have been studied at 25 degrees C and an ionic strength of 0.15 mol dm(-3). The reasonably high formation constants of the copper with this ligand are due to the ease with which the metal ion deprotonates the amide moieties. The square-planar coordination of L2 towards copper as predicted from UV-visible data may also account for the high selectivity of L2 towards the metal ion. Octanol/water partition coefficients of Cu(II)-L2 complexes indicate that although these complexes are largely hydrophilic, approximately 1.86% of the [CuL2H(-1)] species goes into the octanol layer and hence may promote dermal absorption of copper with a calculated penetration rate of 1.24 x 10(-5) cm h(-1). The [CuL2H(-1)] complex which predominates at pH 7.4 is a poor mimic of native copper-zinc superoxide dismutase. Blood-plasma simulation studies predict that, despite the high concentration of zinc and calcium in vivo, L2 is able to increase the low-molecular-mass fraction of copper. Biodistribution experiments using 64Cu-labelled [CuL2H(-1)] indicate an initial high uptake of this species in the liver, but it is predominantly excreted through the renal system.

A new route to achiral and chiral 1,2-bis(phosphino)ethanes, 1-arsino-2-phosphinoethanes, and 1,3-bis(phosphino)propanes and the molecular structure and catalytic activity of some rhodium(I) complexes derived thereof.

A series of unsymmetrical 1,2-bis(phosphino)ethanes R(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PR'(2) and 1-arsino-2-phosphinoethanes R(2)AsCH(2)CH(2)PR'(2) mainly with bulky substituents R and R' were prepared from the cyclic sulfate by stepwise cleavage of the carbon-oxygen bonds by LiPR(2) and LiPR'(2) or LiAsR(2) and LiPR'(2), respectively. Analogously, racemic mixtures of R(2)PCH(2)CH(Me)PPh(2)(R =iPr, Cy ) as well as the enantiomers (R)-, (R)- and (R)-tBu(2)PCH(2)CH(Me)PPh(2)(R)- were obtained from the corresponding unsymmetrical cyclic sulfates and (S)-. On a similar route, the racemates of the 1,3-bis(phosphino)propanes R(2)PCH(2)CH(2)CH(Me)PPh(2)(R =iPr, tBu ), optically pure (R)- and (S,S)-iPr(2)PCH(Me)CH(2)CH(Me)PPh(2)(S,S)- were prepared. The reaction of [[RhCl([small eta](4)-C(8)H(12))](2)] with chelating ligands L-L, where L-L is R(2)PCH(2)P(men)(2)(R =iPr, Ph; men =(1S,2R,5S)-menthyl), Cy(2)AsCH(2)P(men)(2), or (R)-, (R)-, (R)-, (R)- and (S,S)-, in the presence of AgPF(6), gave the complexes [Rh(eta(4)-C(8)H(12))(L-L)]PF(6) which were used as pre-catalysts in the hydrogenation of the methyl ester of alpha-acetamidocinnamic acid (ACM). Depending on L-L, the solvent, the temperature and the pressure of H(2), optical yields of up to 69% ee were achieved. For two of the rhodium complexes, and, the molecular structures were determined by X-ray crystallography.

Coordinative flexibility of 1,2-bis[1,4,7-triazacyclonon-1-yl]propan-2-ol in mononuclear and binuclear Ni(II) complexes.

Reaction of 1,2-bis[1,4,7-triazacyclonon-1-yl]propan-2-ol hexabromide (T(2)PrOH.6HBr) with Ni(ClO(4))(2)[middle dot]6H(2)O and adjustment of the pH to 7 resulted in the crystallization of pink and blue products from the one reaction mixture. The analytical data and X-ray structure determinations establish compositions corresponding to [Ni(T(2)PrOH)]Br(ClO(4))xH(2)O (pink crystals) and [Ni(2)(T(2)PrO)(OH(2))(3)Br]Br(ClO(4))x2H(2)O (blue crystals). A repeat synthesis of the latter yielded the diperchlorate monohydrate [Ni(2)(T(2)PrO)(OH(2))(3)Br](ClO(4))(2)xH(2)O. In the mononuclear complex, the 2-propanol group connecting the two 1,4,7-trizacyclononane (tacn) rings is protonated, the six nitrogen donors from the T(2)PrOH ligand coordinating to a single Ni(II) centre in a distorted octahedral geometry. In the binuclear complexes and, three coordination sites on each distorted octahedral Ni(II) centre are occupied fac by three nitrogen donors from the one tacn ring, the two metal centres being linked by an endogenous alkoxo bridge. A notable common feature of the two identical cations is that for one Ni(II) centre the remaining two sites are occupied by two water ligands, while in the other a bromo ligand replaces one ligated water. Similar binuclear systems have been recently defined [Zn(2)(T(2)PrO)X(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2)(X = Cl, Br), two complexes that exhibit coordination asymmetry with one pseudo-octahedral and one pseudo-square pyramidal Zn(ii) centre. The weak antiferromagnetic coupling in and is discussed and compared to di-phenoxo-bridged Ni(II) examples.

1,1,1-Tris(hydroxymethyl)propane in manganese carboxylate chemistry: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a mixed-valence [MnIII4MnII4] cluster featuring the novel [MnIII4MnII4(mu3-OR)6(mu2-OR)8]6+ core.

The reaction between MnBr(2).4H(2)O with H(3)tmp (1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)propane) in MeCN in the presence of Na(O(2)CCMe(3)) and NBu(4)Br produces the complex [Mn(8)(O(2)CCMe(3))(2)(tmp)(2)(Htmp)(4)Br(4)(H(2)O)(2)].2MeCN (1.2MeCN) in good yield. The centrosymmetric octanuclear molecule consists of four Mn(III) and four Mn(II) ions assembled together by fourteen alkoxo bridges to give a [Mn(III)(4)Mn(II)(4)(mu(3)-OR)(6)(mu(2)-OR)(8)](6+) rod-like core in which the metal centres are arranged in a planar zigzag fashion. Peripheral ligation is provided by a combination of bridging pivalate ions, terminal bromides and water molecules. Dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic interactions leading to a spin ground state of S = 0. A rationalization of this result is attempted by structural comparison with previously reported tetranuclear manganese complexes containing the [Mn(III)(2)Mn(II)(2)(mu(3)-OR)(2)(mu(2)-OR)(4)] core in which the magnetic interactions are ferromagnetic.
