Long-range magnetic order in Mn[N(CN)2]2(pyz) (pyz = pyrazine). Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements and electronic structure calculations.

Using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron diffraction, we have studied the magnetic properties of Mn[N(CN)2]2(pyz) (pyz = pyrazine) in detail. The material crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 7.3248(2), b = 16.7369(4), and c = 8.7905 (2) A, beta = 89.596 (2) degrees, V = 1077.65(7) A(3), and Z = 4, as determined by Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data at 1.35 K. The 5 K neutron powder diffraction data reflect very little variation in the crystal structure. Interpenetrating ReO3-like networks are formed from axially elongated Mn(2+) octahedra and edges made up of mu-bonded [N(CN)2](-) anions and neutral pyz ligands. A three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering occurs below T(N) = 2.53(2) K. The magnetic unit cell is double the nuclear one along the a- and c-axes, giving the (1/2, 0, 1/2) superstructure. The crystallographic and antiferromagnetic structures are commensurate and consist of collinear Mn(2+) moments, each with a magnitude of 4.15(6) mu(B) aligned parallel to the a-direction (Mn-pyz-Mn chains). Electronic structure calculations indicate that the exchange interaction is much stronger along the Mn-pyz-Mn chain axis than along the Mn-NCNCN-Mn axes by a factor of approximately 40, giving rise to a predominantly one-dimensional magnetic system. Thus, the variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data are well described by a Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain model, giving g = 2.01(1) and J/k(B) = -0.27(1) K. Owing to single-ion anisotropy of the Mn(2+) ion, field-induced phenomena ascribed to spin-flop and paramagnetic transitions are observed at 0.43 and 2.83 T, respectively.

Bistability and the phase transition in 1,3,2-dithiazolo[4,5-b]pyrazin-2-yl.

The molecular radical 1,3,2-dithiazolo[4,5-b]pyrazin-2-yl (PDTA) exhibits magnetic bistability just above room temperature, undergoing a well-defined hysteretic phase change with TC downward arrow = 297(1) K and TC upward arrow = 343(1) K. The crystal structures of the two phases of PDTA have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 323(2) K. LT-PDTA consists of diamagnetic (S = 0) nearly superimposed pi-dimer stacks, while that of HT-PDTA comprises slipped stacks of pi-radicals (S = 1/2). The structural interconversion is suggested to proceed via the cooperative breaking and making of intermolecular S- - -N interactions and an inversion symmetry-preserving "domino cascade" of the pi-stacked rings.

Ground- and excited-state electronic structure of an emissive pyrazine-bridged ruthenium(II) dinuclear complex.

The synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical, photophysical, and photochemical properties of the binuclear compounds [(Ru(H8-bpy)2)2((Metr)2Pz)](PF6)2 (1) and [(Ru(D8-bpy)2)2((Metr)2Pz)](PF6)2 (2), where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine and H2(Metr)2Pz is the planar ligand 2,5-bis(5'-methyl-4'H-[1,2,4]triaz-3'-yl)pyrazine, are reported. Electrochemical and spectro-electrochemical investigations indicate that the ground-state interaction between each metal center is predominantly electrostatic and in the mixed-valence form only a low level of ground-state delocalization is present. Resonance Raman, transient, and time-resolved spectroscopies enable a detailed assignment to be made of the excited-state photophysical properties of the complexes. Deuteriation is employed to both facilitate spectroscopic characterization and investigate the nature of the lowest excited states.

Disproportionation of pyrazine in NH+...N hydrogen-bonded complexes: new materials of exceptional dielectric response.

Centrosymmetric pyrazinium NH+...N bonded complexes allow their dielectric properties to be analyzed separately from the bulk ferroelectric polarization observed in the noncentrosymmetric DABCO monosalts. The method of dielectric permittivity measurements has been employed for monitoring polarization fluctuations generated by proton transfers in the NH+...N bonded linear polycations. The revealed dielectric response of [C4H5N2]+BF4- and [C4H5N2]+ClO4- cannot be reconciled with the centrosymmetric symmetry of their structures, but suggests formation of polar defects or nanoregions. Unique transformations of the pyrazine [C4H5N2]+BF4- complex between linear NH+...N hydrogen-bonded polycationic aggregates antiparallel in phase gamma, perpendicular chains in phase beta, and with NH+...N bonds broken in phase alpha have been observed. The [C4H5N2]+ClO4- and [C4H5N2]+BF4- complexes as grown at 290 K are isostructural in orthorhombic phase , space group Pbcm, with linear polycationic chains arranged antiparallel. On heating, the tetrafluoroborate and perchlorate salts each undergoes two first-order phase transitions at similar temperatures about 340-360 K, while on cooling only one phase transition has been observed. An extremely unique sequence of two phase transitions subsequently lowering the symmetry of the [C4H5N2]+BF4- crystal when temperature is increased has been evidenced: the orthorhombic phase heated above 343 K transforms into the monoclinic C2/c-symmetric phase beta, in which the NH+...N bonded linear chains assume perpendicular arrangement; and at about 353-357 K the anions and cations adopt a typical ionic-crystal packing without homonuclear NH+...N hydrogen bonds in a still lower-symmetry monoclinic P21/n-symmetric structure. The exceptional perpendicular arrangement of the linear NH+...N bonded chains in phase beta constitutes a unique system where polarization of small regions can assume various orientations within a plane, depending on the H+ sites. No phase transitions or anomalous dielectric response were observed in the NH+...O bonded [C4H5N2]+NO3- complex. The unprecedented structure-property relations of the pyrazinium complexes fully confirm the role of the NH+...N bond transformations for the dielectric response of analogous DABCO ferroelectrics.

An OFF-OFF-ON fluorescence sensor for metal ions in stepwise complex formation of 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine with metal ions.

The fluorescence intensity of 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (TPPZ) begins to increase at concentrations of metal ions (Mn+) above the 1:2 ratio of metal ion concentration to the initial concentration of TPPZ ([Mn+]/[TPPZ]0 > 0.5), when a 2:1 complex of TPPZ with Mn+ [(TPPZ)2-Mn+] is converted to a 1:1 complex of TPPZ with Mn+ (TPPZ-Mn+), which exhibits strong fluorescence.

Potent HIV protease inhibitors: the development of tetrahydrofuranylglycines as novel P2-ligands and pyrazine amides as P3-ligands.

A series of protease inhibitors bearing constrained unnatural amino acids at the P2-position and novel heterocycles at the P3-position of compound 1 (Ro 31-8959) were synthesized, and their in vitro enzyme inhibitory and antiviral activities were evaluated. Replacement of P2-asparagine of compound 1 with (2S,3'R)-tetrahydrofuranylglycine resulted in improvement in enzyme inhibitory as well as antiviral potencies (compound 23). Interestingly, incorporation of (2S,3'S)-tetrahydrofuranylglycine at the P2-position proved to be less effective. The resulting compound 24 was 100-fold less potent than the 2S,3R-isomer (compound 23). This stereochemical preference indicated a hydrogen-bonding interaction between the tetrahydrofuranyl oxygen and the residues of the S2-region of the enzyme active site. Furthermore, replacement of P3-quinolinoyl ligand of 1 with various novel heterocycles resulted in potent inhibitors of HIV proteases. Of particular interest, compound 2 with (2S,3'R)-tetrahydrofuranylglycine at P2 and pyrazine derivative at P3 is one of the most potent inhibitors of HIV-1 (IC50 value 0.07 nM) and HIV-2 (IC50 value 0.18 nM) proteases. Another important result in this series is the identification of compound 27 in which the P2-P3-amide carbonyl has been removed. The resulting compound 27 has exhibited improvement in antiviral potency while retaining the enzyme inhibitory potency similar to compound 1.

Metal dilution effects on the spin-crossover properties of the three-dimensional coordination polymer Fe(pyrazine)[Pt(CN)4].

The 1A1 left arrow over right arrow 5T2 spin transition has been investigated in the solid solutions of Fe(x)M(1-x)(pyrazine)[Pt(CN)4] (M = Ni or Co, 0 < or = x < or = 1) having a three-dimensional polynuclear structure. Both Ni and Co dilutions tend to decrease the hysteresis width and smooth the transition curves. The enthalpy (entropy) change associated with the spin transition was found to decrease from 26 kJ mol(-1) (84 J K(-1) mol(-1)) for x = 1 to 12 kJ mol(-1) (47 J K(-1) mol(-1)) for 47% Co dilution and to 15 kJ mol(-1) (54 J K(-1) mol(-1)) for 59% Ni dilution. Raman spectroscopy revealed a mixed one- and two-mode behavior in the solid solutions. For the first time, a correlation between vibrational frequencies exhibiting one-mode behavior and the entropy change, which drives the spin crossover, is established.

Surface-enhanced raman scattering of pyrazine at the junction between two Ag20 nanoclusters.

In this work we present a detailed time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) investigation of the absorption and Raman spectra of a pyrazine molecule located at the junction between two Ag20 clusters. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering enhancements of the order of 10(6) have been found for the junction system, which are similar to enhancements of 10(5) found for individual silver nanoparticles. Surprisingly, the chemical enhancement is found to account for as much as 10(5), suggesting that this mechanism might be more important than previously believed, in particular for nanoparticle aggregates. Moreover, TDDFT calculations suggest that unlike larger nanoparticles, the junction between small Ag20 tetrahedral clusters does not provide an electromagnetic "hot spot".

[reaction: see text] Alpha-nitro ketones can be transformed selectively into trialkyl-substituted pyrazines via reaction with alpha-amino ketones using octyl viologen as an electron-transfer reagent. The new synthetic method, and the optimal reaction conditions that allow for the regiochemical control, are described.

A study of the thermal and light induced spin transition in [FeL2](BF4)2 and [FeL2](ClO4)2 L=2,6-di(3-methylpyrazol-1-yl)pyrazine.

The spin crossover compounds [FeL2](BF4)2, L=2,6-di(3-methylpyrazol-1-yl)pyrazine and [FeL2](ClO4)2 have very unusual two stage spin transitions which are initially steep and then become more gradual. A detailed variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction study has shown that the course of the spin transition is controlled by an order-disorder transition in the counter anions. The high and low spin states both crystallise in the tetragonal space group I4, the structures of the high and low spin states are presented at 290 and 30 K, respectively. The title compounds are shown to undergo LIESST (Light Induced Excited Spin State Trapping) under irradiation with either red or green laser light with wavelengths of 632.8 and 532.06 nm, respectively, at 30 K. The cell parameters for the tetragonal photo-induced metastable high spin state at this temperature are a= 9.169(6), c= 17.77(1) A for [FeL2](ClO4)2 with an increase in unit cell volume of 21 A3, and a= 9.11(1), c= 17.75(2) A and an increase in volume of 42.8 A3 for [FeL2](BF4)2.

Aluminium alkyl and aryloxide complexes of pyrazine and bipyridines: synthesis and structure.

The reaction of AlMe(3) and [((t)Bu)(2)Al(micro-OPh)](2) with pyrazine (pyz), 4,4'-bipyridine (4-4'-bipy), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpetha) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpethe) yields (Me(3)Al)(2)(micro-pyz)(1), (Me(3)Al)(2)(micro-4,4'-bipy)(2), (Me(3)Al)(2)(micro-bpetha)(3), (Me(3)Al)(2)(micro-bipethe)(4), Al((t)Bu)(2)(OPh)(pyz)(5), [((t)Bu)(2)Al(OPh)](2)(micro-4,4-bipy)(6a), [((t)Bu)(2)Al(OPh)](2)(micro-bpetha)(7a), [((t)Bu)(2)Al(OPh)](2)(micro-bipethe)(8a). Compounds 1-4, 6a and 7a have been confirmed by X-ray crystallography. In solution compounds 1-4 undergo a rapid ligand-dissociation equilibrium resulting in a time-average spectrum in the (1)H NMR. In contrast, the solution equilibria for compounds 5-8a are sufficiently slow such that the mono-aluminium compounds may be observed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy: Al((t)Bu)(2)(OPh)(4,4-bipy)(6b), Al((t)Bu)(2)(OPh)(bpetha)(7b) and Al((t)Bu)(2)(OPh)(bpethe)(8b). The inability to isolate [((t)Bu)(2)Al(OPh)](2)(micro-pyz) and the relative stability of each complex is discussed with respect to the steric interactions across the bridging ligand (L) and the electronic effect on one Lewis acid-base interaction by the second Lewis acid-base interaction on the same ligand.

Mono-, di- and trinuclear 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (tppz)-containing copper(II) complexes: syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties.

Three new copper(ii) complexes of formula [Cu(tppz)(NCO)(2)].0.4H(2)O (1), [Cu(2)(tppz)Br(4)](2) and [Cu(3)(tppz)(C(5)O(5))(3)(H(2)O)(3)].7H(2)O (3)[tppz = 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine; C(5)O(5)(2-) = croconate, dianion of 4,5-dihydroxycyclopent-4-ene-1,2,3-trione] have been synthesised and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction methods. The structure of complex is made up of neutral [Cu(tppz)(NCO)(2)] mononuclear units and uncoordinated water molecules. The mononuclear units are grouped by pairs to give a rather short copper-copper distance of 3.9244(4) angstroms. The structure of complex 1 consists of neutral tppz-bridged [Cu(2)(tppz)Br(4)] dinuclear units, the copper-copper separation across tppz being 6.6198(1) angstroms. The dinuclear units are further connected through weak, double out-of-plane Cu-Br...Cu bridges [Br(1)...Cu(1a) 4.0028(17) angstroms] creating tetranuclear entities, the copper-copper separation through this interaction being 4.3299(21) angstroms. The structure of complex 3 is built of neutral [Cu(3)(tppz)(C(5)O(5))(3)(H(2)O)(3)] trinuclear units and uncoordinated water molecules. Tppz and one of the croconate groups act as bridging ligands, the former exhibiting the bis-terdentate coordination mode and the latter adopting an unusual asymmetrical bis-bidentate bridging mode through three adjacent oxygen atoms. The other two croconate groups exhibit the bidentate coordination mode. The intramolecular copper-copper separations are 6.5417(9)(across tppz) and 4.3234(9) angstroms (through bis-bidentate croconato). The magnetic properties of 2 and 3 have been investigated in the temperature range 1.9-300 K. The magnetic behaviour of complex 2 is that of an antiferromagnetically coupled copper(II) dimer (J = -40.9 cm(-1), the Hamiltonian being H = -JS(A).S(B)). In the case of compound , the chi(M) T vs. T plot is typical of an overall antiferromagnetic coupling with a low-lying spin doublet being fully populated at T < 10 K. The values of the intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions in 3 are -19.9 (across tppz) and -32.9 cm(-1)(through bridging croconato). Density functional type calculations were performed on model dinuclear fragments of 3 in order to analyze the efficiency of the exchange pathways involved and also to substantiate the coupling parameters.

Electrochemical properties of dinuclear [Ru([n]aneS4)] complexes of 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine.

The syntheses of three new dinuclear [Ru([n]aneS(4))] complexes, where n = 12, 14, 16, bridged by the ligand 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine, (dpp) are reported. The absorption spectra of the complexes show changes in the energy of the MLCT bands within the series, indicating that the thiacrown ligands stabilise the Ru(II) oxidation state to different degrees. Electrochemical studies are also consistent with these observations, and reveal that the pi-acceptor properties of [n]aneS(4) ligands lead to metal based oxidation couples occurring at potentials that are more anodic than those observed in the analogous dinuclear [Ru(bpy)(2)](2+) complex. Despite the back-bonding properties of the thiacrown ligands leading to a reduction in ligand-bridge mediated metal-metal coupling, electrochemical interactions between the metals are still considerable.

Cobalt(II) octacyanotungstate(V) organic-inorganic hybrid ferromagnetic materials with pyrazine and 4,4'-bipyridine.

Two new ferromagnetic organic-inorganic hybrid materials [Co(II)3(H2O)6(pyz)3[W(V)(CN)8]2].3.5H2O (1) and [Co(II)3(H2O)4(4,4'-bpy)3[W(V)(CN)8]2].1.5(4,4'-bpy).6H2O (2) have been synthesised and characterised. The structure of the compounds have been investigated combining EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure), ES-MS (electrospray mass spectrometry), IR (infrared spectroscopy), UV-VIS electronic spectroscopy and TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) coupled with QMS (quadrupole mass spectrometer) experiments. The studies reveal that both compounds consist of Co(II)-NC-W(V) and Co(II)-L-Co(II) linkages (L = pyrazine (1) or 4,4-bipyridine (2)). Both networks are created by cyano-bridged Co(II)3W(V)2 chains joined by organic linkers into a 2D architecture. A difference of cobalt coordination numbers in both compounds derived from EXAFS study is consistent with the ES-MS conclusion. The ac magnetic characterisation exhibits the transition to the ferromagnetic phase at T(C) = 26 K (1) and to the spin glass-like phase at T(G) = 16 K (2). The frequency dependent chi'(T) and chi''(T) signals indicate the presence of some disorder in spin alignment below ordering temperatures. Both networks are also characterised a by magnetic hysteresis loop of coercive field H(c) = 750 Oe (1) and 1200 Oe (2) at T = 4.2 K.

Real time quantum propagation on a Monte Carlo trajectory guided grids of coupled coherent states: 26D simulation of pyrazine absorption spectrum.

In this work we apply the coupled coherent states technique of quantum molecular dynamics to simulation of the absorption spectrum of pyrazine. All 24 vibrational modes are taken into account. The nonadiabatic coupling obetween the S(1) and S(2) electronic states is treated by a mapping approach that adds two extra degrees of freedom to the effective vibronic Hamiltonian. The results are in a good agreement with experiment and with previous calculations by quantum multiconfigurational time dependent Hartree and semiclassical Herman-Kluk methods.
