[Determination of the plutonium-239 content of the body].

In order to increase the informativeness of the indirect dosimetric estimates of plutonium-239 body levels complex makers are widely used to enhance natural excretion of the radionuclide in urine, the ratio between 239Pu levels in urine and skeleton being measured. However, as the onset of chelate application is postponed its efficacy, with respect to the skeleton, sharply decreases making it impossible to obtain reliable information concerning plutonium 239 levels in bone tissues at later times.

[Behavior of plutonium in the body of rats following its intragastric administration in a complex with tributyl phosphate].

A study was made of the distribution of plutonium-239 within the rat body after single intragastric administration thereof (1.85 MBq) in a mixture with tributyl phosphate (TBP) and as Pu(IV) nitrate at a time interval from 4 min to 512 days. It was shown that the distribution of the radionuclide was virtually the same but its absorption from the gastrointestinal tract with Pu-TBP was higher by one order of magnitude and exceeded the value recommended by ICRP for soluble plutonium compounds.

Concentration of fallout plutonium in tissues of Japanese who died during 1980-1984.

The concentrations of fallout 239 + 240Pu in various body tissues of subjects who were born before 1941 and who died in Akita and Niigata Prefectures in Japan during 1980-1984 are reported. The median concentrations in vertebrae, sternum, liver, lung, spleen, and kidney were 0.21, 0.08, 0.62, 0.11, 0.08, 0.03 pCi/kg wet weight, respectively. The concentration levels in vertebrae were approximately three times higher than in the sternum. No significant correlation between the concentration in the various tissues and age at the time of death was observed. No differences in the concentration levels in liver and lung were observed between the sexes. Correlation between the concentration in liver and that in lung was not significant. The concentration in liver was similar to that estimated from the ICRP 30 model. However, the concentration in lung was considerably higher than the estimated value. This difference may be caused by the pulmonary lymph nodes contained in the present lung samples. To obtain the average concentration of plutonium in the entire skeleton, further information regarding the macrodistribution of plutonium is required.

[Plutonium-239 distribution in the body in relation to the rhythm of administration of an iron preparation].

A study was made of the dependence of plutonium distribution among organs and tissues on the time of administration of iron preparation. Iron decreased the share of plutonium in bone tissues, somewhat increased it in soft tissues, and enhanced the excretion of the radionuclide from the organism. The protective efficiency of the preparation in relation to bone tissue was associated with the time of the administration thereof.

[Dynamics of nucleic acid metabolism in the bone marrow and liver of rats exposed to the combined action of external gamma radiation and plutonium-239].

A combined effect of a single exposure to gamma-radiation (103.2 mC/kg) and plutonium-239 (92.5 kBq/kg body weight) caused a decrease in the total number of caryocytes and a change in the nucleic acid metabolism in rat bone marrow. At early times, the changes noted in the bone marrow, as well as in other radiosensitive tissues, were induced by gamma-radiation; at later times (180-360 days), the effect was evidently produced by the incorporated plutonium. In liver tissues, the variation of all the parameters under study was less pronounced.

Variation of hepatic mitochondrial nucleotides in rats contaminated with plutonium-239.

Rats were given 239Pu citrate i.v. and the mitochondria of hepatocytes were studied. A reduction of oxygen consumption per mg protein with time was seen. We have investigated the nucleotides involved in nuclear phosphorylation. After mitochondrial extraction according to Schneider and Hogeboom, [1950], a new method was used for estimating CMP, NAD, 5' AMP, NADP, ADP and GTP. Flavine mononucleotide was not determined. The plutonium content was followed from day 0 to day 65 post injection. Mitochondrial nucleotides were studied on days 5 and 11. On day 5, all nucleotide levels were reduced by 20 to 70% except AMP which increased and GTP which remained constant. On day 11, all nucleotides had decreased by 70 to 100% except NAD which increased by 20 to 30%. The results suggest that plutonium citrate given intravenously has a time dependent effect on the energy metabolism of the liver.

Nutritional influences on plutonium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract of the rat.

Rats that were fasted and/or fed diets consisting of whole milk, dry milk, milk supplement, orange juice, low calcium, or low vitamin D were gavaged with 238Pu nitrate to measure plutonium absorption. All dietary variations resulted in increases in both absorption and retention. The increases ranged between 2 and 20 times the absorption values obtained for rats fed commercial chow. Sucklings of dams fed a calcium-deficient diet also exhibited increased 238Pu absorption. The results indicate that nutrition is an important factor influencing gastrointestinal absorption of plutonium.

[Plutonium-239 metabolism in chemical skin burns].

Certain peculiarities of metabolism of plutonium-239 were revealed after skin applications there of in solutions of nitrogen acid, tributyl phosphate and hexychloro-butadiene. It was shown that the absorption of plutonium-239 in 0.1 NHO3 solution for 3 days made up 0.02% of the quantity applied. The increase in the acid concentration up to 0.5-10 N was accompanied by a 2.5-5-fold increase in the resorption. The application of the nuclide in organic solvents was characterized by a 4-5-fold increase in its accretion within the body. There was a 25-fold increase in the absorption of 239Pu after the combined effect of the acid and the organic solvents on the skin.

The effect of mass on the gastrointestinal absorption of plutonium and neptunium.

Absorption and retention of plutonium were determined in mice after intragastric administration of either 6 X 10(-4) or 1.5 mg/kg in bicarbonate, citrate, or nitrate media. At the higher concentration, absorption of the citrate was greater than that of the nitrate; at the lower concentration, chemical form was not an important factor in absorption. Concentration and chemical form had much less influence on absorption by the neonatal (versus the adult) rat. The transfer factor (f1) for neonates was between one and two orders of magnitude higher than for adults. Absorption and retention of neptunium were determined in rats and/or mice after intragastric administration at doses ranging from 2.2 X 10(-7) to 43 mg/kg in nitrate solutions of pH 1.5. At the higher concentrations, absorption was 1.5 to 2.7%. For lower concentrations, absorption was 25 to 65 times less. In contrast to results obtained in adult animals, absorption of neptunium by neonates decreased with increasing dose. The data obtained in adult animals suggest that the f1 factor recommended by the ICRP for plutonium should be increased by a factor of 10, but the neptunium f1 factor, in contrast, should be decreased by a factor of 10.

Hematological effects of inhaled plutonium dioxide in beagles.

A life-span study indicated that plutonium activity in the thoracic lymph nodes is a contributor to development of lymphopenia in beagles exposed to 239PuO2. Significant lymphopenia was found in 67 (58%) beagles given a single nose-only exposure to 239PuO2 to result in mean initial lung depositions ranging from 0.69 to 213.3 kBq. Lymphoid atrophy and sclerosis of the thoracic lymph nodes and lymphopenia were observed in exposure-level groups with initial lung depositions > or = 2.5 kBq. Those dogs with final plutonium concentrations in the thoracic lymph nodes > or = 0.4 kBq/g and dose rates > or = 0.01 Gy/day developed lymphopenia. Marked differences existed between chronically lymphopenic dogs and intermittently lymphopenic dogs with regard to initial lung deposition, time to lymphopenic events and absolute lymphocyte concentrations. Linear regression analysis revealed moderate correlation between reduction in lymphocyte values and initial lung deposition, in both magnitude and time of appearance after exposure. Cumulative dose and dose rate appeared to act together to produce initial effects on lymphocyte populations, while dose rate alone appeared to be responsible for the maintenance and subsequent cycles of lymphopenia seen over the life span. No primary tumors were associated with the thoracic lymph nodes in this study, although 70% of the lymphopenic dogs developed lung tumors.

Sequential analysis of the pathogenesis of plutonium-induced pulmonary neoplasms in the rat: morphology, morphometry, and cytokinetics.

Light microscopy, morphometry, and cytokinetic techniques were used to examine the dynamics of plutonium-induced pulmonary proliferative lesions and neoplasms in rats at several intervals to 450 days after inhalation exposure to aerosols of 239PuO2. Maximal increases in alveolar and bronchiolar epithelial cell labeling were seen at 30 days; decreasing subsequently, the levels remained elevated above control indices. Focal proliferative epithelial lesions developed in the lung by 180 days and before the onset of pulmonary neoplasms. Pulmonary neoplasms, predominantly adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, were initially observed at 308 days. The proliferative lesions progressed through a succession of morphological changes leading to the development of neoplasms. The volume density (fraction) and epithelial surface area of foci of alveolar epithelial hyperplasia increased progressively between 180 and 450 days after exposure, in contrast to the other proliferative lesions. We conclude that plutonium-induced pulmonary neoplasms develop through a succession of focal proliferative lesions that represent developmental preneoplastic lesions. Progressive increases in volume and epithelial surface area of the alveolar epithelial hyperplasias suggest that they may be more at risk for neoplastic transformation than the other histological types of proliferative foci.

[Health effects of plutonium pollution--assessment after the Thule disaster in 1968].

On 21 January 1968 a B-52 airplane with four nuclear weapons crashed on the ice close to the Thule air base in northern Greenland. Approximately six kilograms of plutonium was dispersed in the surroundings. Since 1968, the possible health impacts among the Danish civilian workers who assisted at the clean-up have been discussed regularly. A Nordic expert group was appointed by the Danish government to examine the evidence. The group concluded in May 1995 that no conclusive evidence of damage to the health of the worker as a result of plutonium pollution had been reported. However, they recommended continued follow-up of record linkage studies on cancer and a closer investigation of the rare skin disease parapsoriasis en plaque.

[A comparative evaluation of the efficacy of different methods for the decorporation of plutonium from the respiratory organs].

The behavior of plutonium in the organism and the mechanism of formation of absorbed doses in rats of different age were studied in a comparative aspect. The efficiency of CaDTPA depending on the animal's age and the usage was estimated. Under similar conditions, the efficiency of early single injections of CaDTPA to rat cubs was 2.3 (skeleton) or 3.3 (liver) times lower than that for mature rats. Attempts of modifying the kinetics of low-transportable plutonium-239 by stimulation of pulmonary alveolar macrophages failed.

[Contents of plutonium and microelements in the hair of Belarus inhabitants living in the areas contaminated during the Chernobyl AES accident].

The levels of plutonium were studied in the body of inhabitants of the Minsk and Gomel Regions. Their hair was used as the indicator of its levels. The hair concentrations of plutonium correlated with its content in the ribs. The hair levels of lead in the inhabitants of some populated localities of the Gomel Region were found to be higher than those in the residents of unpolluted areas and industrial centers of the Republic of Belarus.

Source-term characterisation and solid speciation of plutonium at the Semipalatinsk NTS, Kazakhstan.

New data on the concentrations of key fission/activation products and transuranium nuclides in samples of soil and water from the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site are presented and interpreted. Sampling was carried out at Ground Zero, Lake Balapan, the Tel'kem craters and reference locations within the test site boundary well removed from localised sources. Radionuclide ratios have been used to characterise the source term(s) at each of these sites. The geochemical partitioning of plutonium has also been examined and it is shown that the bulk of the plutonium contamination at most of the sites examined is in a highly refractory, non-labile form.

Plutonium isotopes in seas around the Korean Peninsula.

239+240Pu concentrations and 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios in coastal seas adjacent to the Korean Peninsula were determined, during the period 1999 to 2002, to assess the current distribution and to identify sources of Pu isotopes. 239+240Pu concentrations in surface waters ranged from 3.1 to 22.3 mBq m(-3) with higher concentrations in winter than in summer. 239+240Pu concentrations in seawaters around the Korean Peninsula are greater than that in the western North Pacific. 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios ranged from 0.18 to 0.33 with an average value of 0.25+/-0.03, which is significantly higher than the global fallout average. The 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios of the 2000 m deep entire water column in the south western part of the East Sea (Sea of Japan) was comparable to that observed in waters near Bikini Atoll. The higher 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios than that of global fallout may be explained by the hypothesis that the earlier input signal of low 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio (0.18-0.19) of global fallout plutonium in seas adjacent to the Korean Peninsula is being gradually diluted by the high 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio plutonium transported from the tropical Pacific Proving Grounds via prevailing ocean current.

Plutonium disproportionation: the relation of work integrals.

Two plutonium work integrals have been demonstrated in recent years. One of them applies to the work of disproportionation and the other to the work of oxidation of plutonium from the trivalent to a higher oxidation state. This paper illustrates the connection of the integrals by an example and a diagram.
