Rheumatic manifestations of current pharmacopeia.

Patient complaints arising as manifestations of medication side effects are commonly encountered in clinical practice. A rheumatologist must routinely consider side effects of drugs in the differential diagnosis of many symptoms. This review will remind the reader of certain well-described and some newly reported side effects commonly encountered in an internal medicine practice. Focal points incude arthralgias/arthritis, myopathy/myositis, ANA/drug-induced lupus, bone loss/osteoporosis, and tendon rupture.

Pharmacopeia of Qollahuaya Andeans.

This research report contains a list of 89 medicinal plants employed by the Qollahuaya (Callawaya) Andeans of Bolivia, who are famous herbalists in South America. This list contains botanical classification, origin of plant, quality, therapeutical properties, and medicinal uses. An analysis is made of the distribution of qualities and therapeutical uses to ascertain the scope of their pharmacology and incidence of disease. Therapeutic properties are interrelated with physiology in an effort to understand Qollahuaya ethnophysiology.

Study of the British Pharmacopeia method on methimazole (thiamazole) content in carbimazole tablets.

The analysis of carbimazole tablets in The British Pharmacopoeia, 1993, includes a quantitative thin layer chromatography (TLC) determination of methimazole. Repeated analysis of the same samples did not give similar results. The repeatability and reproducibility of the method was studied. It was proved that the residence time of the methimazole spot on the TLC plate is time dependent.

Understanding ethnic women's experiences with pharmacopeia.

For centuries, women have been the primary caregivers and healers in their communities. The literature documents well that the tasks involved in caregiving, such as preparing remedies, providing physical nurturance, and attending the sick, give a gynocentric flavor to healing traditions. Ethnic women, in particular, promote caring and curing through a wide range of folk remedies. These remedies employ foods, herbs, and over-the-counter medications. Importantly, the actual remedies are not as critical to the care of an ill person as the meaning of the cultural memories inherent in acts of caring. I discovered comfort, nurturance, and familiarity to be intrinsic to the holistic nature of the remedies used and to be salient features of the memories of healing and curing within Puerto Rican and African American groups. Through the use of remedies, the Puerto Rican and African American women who participated in these phenomenological investigations impart healing for the body, mind, and spirit.

The U.S. Pharmacopeia's role in establishing public standards for aerosols.

USP, a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization, establishes public standards for and information on articles used in the healing art through an elected body of Committee of Revision comprised of scientific experts in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, pharmaceutical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and others. To be consistent with latest developments in manufacturing and analytical technologies, USP has a continuous revision policy. Major revisions to the General Chapter on Aerosols officially adopted recently that include detailed descriptions of multi-stage cascade impactor apparatus, two different single-stage impaction devises used in particle size of determination, uniformity of assage units, minimum fill and other tests are discussed. Further revisions to the chapter on Aerosols under consideration such as test procedure for nebulizers, extractables and particulate matter are discussed.

United States pharmacopeia development of the Medicare model formulary guidelines.

Prescription drug formularies are a key element in prescription drug benefit management. The use of formularies can both increase the quality of prescribing and reduce the costs of prescription drug therapy. The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 specified that an external agency, the United States Pharmacopeial Convention, Inc. (USP) through the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services develop model formulary guidelines for prescription drug plans. The model formulary guidelines are to assist individual drug plans in developing formularies that would qualify for participation in the Medicare Part D prescription program. The guidelines were developed through a Model Guidelines Expert Committee assisted by USP staff and following input from patient advocate groups, health care organizations, and pharmaceutical organizations over a period of 8 months (April 2004 to December 2004). The USP Model Formulary Guidelines organize prescription medications into 41 therapeutic categories (32 with associated pharmacologic classes and nine with no associated pharmacologic classes), 137 pharmacologic classes, and 146 unique therapeutic categories and pharmacologic classes.
