[Cutaneous histopathologic changes in laboratories working in the processing of petroleum].

Petroleum and its derivatives are a complex mixture of many constituents in varying proportions, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers and additives. It is well established that petroleum derivatives are absorbed through the skin but exposure has not been quantified. Manifestations of cutaneous exposure vary from squamous cell carcinoma to irritative contact dermatitis such as occurs in the workplace. The aim of the investigation was to evaluate cutaneous histomorphological alterations in a group of 10 healthy workers occupationally exposed to repeated and low amounts of gasoline for a prolonged period. Histological examination and immunocytochemical techniques were performed after taking punch biopsies. The results showed the presence of perivascular lympho-plasma cell infiltration and leucocyte cells scattered in the dermal layer. A mild increase in epidermal Langerhans cells was also observed while the detection of the Ki-67 antigen in keratinocytes gave a normal appearance. In conclusion, the overall histomorphological and immunological features was not specific, but resembled skin reactions due to several irritative agents. Such skin alterations can lead to contact dermatitis.

Bioamendment of petroleum contaminated ultisol: effect on oil content, heavy metals and pH of tropical soil.

The effect of organic amendments on the oil content, heavy metals concentration and pH of petroleum contaminated sandy loam ultisol obtained from Rumuekpe oil field in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria was determined. Petroleum contaminated soils were treated with wood ash, compost and sawdust. The addition of organic amendments resulted in a significant (at 95% probability level) decrease in oil content by 92% for composting, 81% for soil treated with sawdust and 58% for soil with ash supplementation, over 6 months. The effect of treatments on the iron(Fe), copper(Cu) and lead(Pb) concentration was significant at P < 0.001. The remediation also affected the pH of soil. This initial pH of 5.6 was depressed by the application of compost and sawdust supplements respectively to a final pH of 5.2 and 5.3. On the other hand, amending the soil with wood ash raised the pH from 5.6 to 6.2. Increased acidity caused a decrease in the heavy metals concentration in the contaminated soil. Soil treatment with compost generally gave the best remediation results, followed by sawdust and then ash. Adjusting the pH of oil contaminated soil to high acidic levels may promote the availability and migration of heavy metals in remediated soils and not necessarily the rate of oil mineralization.

[Sanitary-toxicological assessment of petroleum slimers undergone biological purification].

Pilot production and production studies using a biological method for treating and neutralizing toxic waste polluted with petroleum products at high concentrations (up to 30%) were conducted. The results have indicated that the use of oil degrading microorganisms is highly promising. Within the first vegetative period as high as 80% of petroleum products withdrew from waste and over 95% of those migrated into the aqueous medium. Purification decreased the content of mobile phases of metals to the values below the maximum allowable concentrations. The waste that is highly toxic for protozoa and the test crop wheat shall be considered to be nontoxic.

[Bioremediation for petroleum-contaminated soil by composting technology].

With composting technology of off-site bioremediation, the bioremediation of soil contaminated by crude oil from Liaohe Oil Field was studied. 4 treatments units were set, each units being 118.5 cm in length, 65.5 cm in width, and 12.5 cm in height. The results showed that when the soil was contaminated with 5.22 g.100 g-1 TPH, the degradation rate of TPH reached 54.2% after 55 days operation by Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The results also indicated that the major factors that effected the TPH bioremediation results were the content of O2 and CO2, the amounts of microorganism that degraded petroleum hydrocarbons, and the changes of pH in contaminated soil. These factors could directly reflect the effect of composting treatment technology, and be used to optimize the operation conditions of composting technology to reach the best result. The treatment engineering adopted periodical aired means, operated very simple, and costed very cheap, whtch provided a practical technology for the bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil.

[Factors of occupational stress on the working ability of petroleum workers].

The relationship between occupational stress and working ability and their influence factors have been studied. 1230 oil workers in 122 work types of oil industry were selected and an occupational stress questionnaire (OSQ) was filled. The working ability index (WAI) in the female was significantly higher than that in the male (P < 0.0001). The working ability of petroleum workers became lower with the increasing of age, the duration of working time and stress levels (P < 0.001). The correlation on the labor load, adverse factors in the working environment and WAI was negative. It was concluded that the occupational stress could decrease the working ability of petroleum workers.

A GIS-based modeling system for petroleum waste management. Geographical information system.

With an urgent need for effective management of petroleum-contaminated sites, a GIS-aided simulation (GISSIM) system is presented in this study. The GISSIM contains two components: an advanced 3D numerical model and a geographical information system (GIS), which are integrated within a general framework. The modeling component undertakes simulation for the fate of contaminants in subsurface unsaturated and saturated zones. The GIS component is used in three areas throughout the system development and implementation process: (i) managing spatial and non-spatial databases; (ii) linking inputs, model, and outputs; and (iii) providing an interface between the GISSIM and its users. The developed system is applied to a North American case study. Concentrations of benzene, toluene, and xylenes in groundwater under a petroleum-contaminated site are dynamically simulated. Reasonable outputs have been obtained and presented graphically. They provide quantitative and scientific bases for further assessment of site-contamination impacts and risks, as well as decisions on practical remediation actions.

Numerical modelling of the petroleum oil penetration into sandy beach sediments.

A numerical model describing the penetration of petroleum oil into sandy beach sediments was developed to assess the behavior of stranded oil at tidal zone as a result of tanker accidents, and so on. To understand the penetration behavior, penetration rate of three species of petroleum oil (two species of fuel oil C and one species of crude oil) was observed experimentally with artificial tidal zone equipment. As a consequence, two types of oil were distinguished from the viewpoint of penetration rate. One (fuel oil C-1) kept its homogeneity in composition and showed relatively rapid penetration, the other (fuel oil C-2 and crude oil) became heterogeneous and slow in penetration. Considering this aspect as the adsorption of polar compounds (i.e. asphaltenes) on the sediment surface, a numerical model that described oil penetration into sandy beach was developed. As a result, the difference in penetration rate between these two types of oil could not be replicated sufficiently only by consideration of the adsorption. However, the change of a parameter value which represents the apparent viscosity of oil led to good agreement with observations. Simulation results indicated that when fuel oil C or crude oil used in this study was stranded at a sandy beach located in Hiroshima Bay, Japan, 2 to 39% of total stranded oil might penetrate into the deeper zone (> 3 cm in depth) over 50 days.

[Distributions of COD and petroleum hydrocarbons and their relationships with occurrence of red tide in East China Sea].

Based on the data of COD and petroleum hydrocarbons collected in the cruise from April 25 to May 2, 2002 in intensive red tide occurrence areas in East China Sea, the distribution of COD, and petroleum hydrocarbons and the eutrophication index(EI) were analyzed. The results showed that the EI and COD value were both high in coastal water, and decreased gradually away from shore. After the preliminary study on the relationships between correlative factors and occurrence of red tide, it was found that high EI and COD were necessary. There would be great chances for the red tide to break out under conditions that the EI was between 2.5 and 15 and COD concentration was between 0.8 to 1.4 mg.L-1 in seawater, along with the favorable temperature and salinity.

Primary silver extraction with a high sulphur activated petroleum coke.

An extended study was performed to determine the mechanisms that are responsible for the significant silver extraction capacity of activated carbons prepared from a high-sulphur petroleum coke that is available as a waste material from Mexican petroleum refineries. Earlier studies had shown the feasibility of the production of these adsorbents but indicated that the mechanisms of metal adsorption in the present carbons are significantly different from what is classically accepted for commercial carbons. Therefore, selective titration, IR-spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy of carbons were combined with adsorption experiments and the determination of electrochemical parameters of mixtures of carbon-AgNO3 solution to explain the fundamental reasons for the performance of the obtained carbons. This allowed us to determine the identity of the surface functional groups and to distinguish the effect of different activation processes. The experiments permitted us to explain why these activated carbons, which have a low specific area and lack classical surface functional groups, show such a high silver adsorption capacity.

[Effect of photosynthetic bacteria and compost on degradation of petroleum products in soil].

Addition of diesel fuel and waste engine oil to soil was found to cause biostimulation of hydrocarbon-oxidizing microorganisms. Corynebacteria constitute a large group of hydrocarbon-oxidizing microorganisms. Addition of a liquid culture of photosynthetic bacteria to soil not only facilitates degradation of petroleum products, but also stimulates growth of hydrocarbon-oxidizing microorganisms. Combined addition of photosynthetic bacteria and compost to soil polluted with petroleum products causes even a more significant increase in the count of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria and substantially increases the rate of pollutant degradation.

[Eco-toxicity diagnosis on sediments of petroleum wastewater irrigation channel].

Sediment samples were collected from several sites in the upper, mid and lower reaches of the petroleum wastewater irrigation channel in eastern Shenyang of China, and the concentrations of their Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and mineral oil were analyzed. The results showed that the pollutants were accumulated in all of sediment samples, with 408-118,300 mg x kg(-1) mineral oil, 17.83-78.53 mg x kg(-1) Cu, 35.76-155.16 mg x kg(-1) Zn, 8.50-31.03 mg x kg(-1) Pb and 0.1-1.0 mg x kg(-1) Cd. The sediments showed an inhibition or stimulation effect on plant root elongation and a lethal and sub-lethal effect on earthworm. The inhibition rate of root elongation based on germination test was -29.81 to 93.8%. During 14 d exposure, the maximum mortality rate of earworm was 100%, and during 14d and 28d exposure, the inhibition rate of its body weight growth was -36.6%-(-)6.08% and -40.4%-6.1%, respectively. The study indicated that a long-term irrigation with petroleum wastewater resulted in the accumulation of pollutants in channel sediments and enhanced eco-toxicity.

Surface active properties of bacterial strains isolated from petroleum hydrocarbon-bioremediated soil.

Two bacterial strains identified as Ralstonia picketti (BP 20) and Alcaligenes piechaudii (CZOR L-1B) were isolated from petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil following bioremediation treatment. The surface active properties, e.g. surface tension, emulsification and foamability of their culture filtrates were evaluated. Bacterial cell-surface hydrophobicity (BAH) as measured by analyzing cell affinity towards aliphatic and aromatic compounds was also determinated. The bacteria grew in liquid cultures containing 1% (v/v) of crude oil as carbon and energy source at 30 degrees C under aerobic conditions. The surface tensions were reduced to 61 mN/m and 55 mN/m by Ralstonia picketti and Alcaligenes piechaudii, respectively. The emulsification index (EI24) was almost 100% for all tested compounds except diesel oil. The stability of the emulsions was deteminated at 4 degrees C, 45 degrees C and 65 degrees C. The emulsions were stable at 4 degrees C. Ralstonia picketti was better foam inducer (FV = 50 ml) compared to Alcaligenes piechaudii (FV = 10 ml). The BAH measurements revealed higher adhesion of Alcaligenes piechaudii cells towards different hydrocarbons compared to Ralstonia picketti cells. The strains were found to have a surface hydrophobicity in the following order: aliphatic hydrocarbons, BTEX, and PAHs. The ability to adhere to bulk hydrocarbon is mostly a characteristic of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. The strains were found to be better emulsifiers than surface tension reducers. They produce water-soluble extracellular bioemulsifiers. Both bacterial isolates have good properties to use them, mainly in the petroleum industry, e.g. in enhanced oil recovery and in bioremediation processes-primarily due to their emulsification property, i.e. emulsion forming and stabilizing capacity.

[Mathematical simulation of accumulation of opportunistic micromycetes in petroleum-polluted soils].

The impact of pollution of different types of soils (leached chernozem, grey wood and dark-grey wood soils) with petroleum and its products on the size, species-specific composition, and accumulation of opportunistic micromycetes was studied in long-term field microallotment and laboratory conditions. Petroleum and its refining products were shown to increase the size of micromycetes and to change their structure and species diversity. A mathematical model has been developed, which describes the time course of changes in the size of mushroom propagules under different environmental conditions.

Enumeration of petroleum-degrading marine and estuarine microorganisms by the most probable number method.

Several media designed for use in a most probable number (MPN) determination of petroleum-degrading microorganisms were compared. The best results, i.e., largest numbers, were obtained using a buffered (32 mM PO4=) liquid medium containing 1% hydrocarbon substrate. Of 104 presumptive oil degraders tested, 20 grew on oil agar medium but did not utilize oil or a mixture of pure paraffinic hydrocarbons (C10 to C16 n-alkanes) in liquid (MPN) medium. Visible turbidity in the liquid medium was correlated with hydrocarbon utilization. Counts of petroleum degraders obtained using liquid medium (MPN) were in most cases higher than those obtained on an oil-amended silica gel medium. Both procedures yield an estimation of oil degraders, and the oil-amended agar permits growth of organisms which do not degrade crude oil. All strains of oil-degrading microorganisms examined in this study were lipolytic, but the converse was not always true.
