Genotyping from semen of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata).

The noninvasive collection of animal cells is crucial for DNA analyses in wild populations that cannot be disturbed by capture. We describe the collection of 68 semen samples following copulation and masturbation events in wild habituated and nonhabituated troops of Japanese macaques on the protected island of Yakushima. We used this DNA to amplify 390 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial DNA control region in 16 individuals from eight troops, and found a monomorphic pattern in agreement with the low variability imposed by geographic isolation and female philopatry. We also amplified two microsatellite loci from samples collected after the resident males of a focal troop had copulated with different females. We found several different allele combinations in samples collected after the observed mating of a single male, indicating the presence of contaminant DNA, presumably from males that had previously mated with the same female. This discovery made it impossible to assign a given sample to a specific male except when the samples were recovered after masturbation events. Thus, it was not possible to test for kinship or estimate allele frequencies from the semen samples. The mixing of semen, and the pattern of sample collection observed in morphologically identified individuals support the notion that strong mating and sperm competition exists among resident and nonresident males.

Ethnic and gender differences in sexuality: variations in sexual behavior between Asian and non-Asian university students.

Seven hundred and two (346 non-Asian, 356 Asian) undergraduate volunteers were assessed in a confidential laboratory setting on levels of interpersonal sexual behavior (e.g., petting, intercourse), intrapersonal sexual behavior (e.g., fantasy, masturbation), and sociosexual restrictiveness (e.g., lifetime number of partners, number of "one-night stands"). The purpose was to examine possible differences in sexual behavior between Asian and non-Asian Canadian university students and to determine the association between North American residency and the sexual behavior of Asians. The role of gender on sexual behavior both across and within ethnic groups was also examined. Statistical analyses revealed that Asian students were significantly more conservative than non-Asian students on all measures of interpersonal sexual behavior and sociosexual restrictiveness. Significant differences were also noted between Asian and non-Asian students on most measures of intrapersonal sexual behavior. With the exception of two fantasy items, length of residency in Canada was unrelated to interpersonal sexual behavior, intrapersonal sexual behavior, or sociosexual restrictiveness among Asians. Although gender differences were substantial for intrapersonal sexual behaviors such as fantasy and masturbation, no significant gender differences were found for measures of interpersonal sexual experience, with the exception of reported number of one-night stands.

Leuprolide acetate suppresses pedophilic urges and arousability.

Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy was compared with cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy augmented by leuprolide acetate (LA) for suppression of pedophilic behavior. Five male pedophiles (M age, 50 years; range, 36-58) were administered LA by Depo injection for 12 months, followed by saline placebo for 12 months. Testosterone levels, sexual interest preference by visual reaction time (Abel Assessment), penile tumescence (Monarch Penile Plethysmography, PPG), as well as strong sexual urges toward children and masturbatory frequency involving thoughts of children (polygraph), were measured every 3 months. On LA, testosterone decreased to castrate levels. Penile tumescence was significantly suppressed compared with baseline, but sufficient response remained to detect pedophilic interest. Pedophilic interest was also detected by visual reaction times. When asked about having pedophilic urges and masturbating to thoughts of children, all subjects self-reported a decrease. Polygraph responses indicated subjects were not deceptive. On placebo, testosterone and physiologic arousal eventually rose to baseline. As noted by polygraph, at baseline and on placebo, subjects were deceptive regarding increased pedophilic urges and masturbatory frequency. Interest preference, as measured by Abel Assessment and Monarch PPG, was generally unchanged throughout the study. Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy augmented with LA significantly reduced pedophilic fantasies, urges, and masturbation; however, pedophilic interest did not change during 1 year of therapy. Deceptive responses by polygraph suggested that self-report was unreliable. Follow-up utilizing objective measures is essential for monitoring efficacy of treatment in pedophilia. Our study supports the premise that suppression of pedophilic behavior is possible. LA may augment cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and help break the sequence leading to a re-offense.

University males' sexual interest in children: predicting potential indices of "pedophilia" in a nonforensic sample.

A survey was administered to 193 male undergraduate students regarding their sexual interest in children, as well as their responses to a number of questions theoretically relevant to pedophilia. In total, 21% of subjects reported sexual attraction to some small children, 9% described sexual fantasies involving children, 5% admitted to having masturbated to such fantasies, and 7% indicated some likelihood of having sex with a child if they could avoid detection and punishment. These sexual interests were associated with negative early sexual experiences, masturbation to pornography, self-reported likelihood of raping a woman, frequent sex partners, sexual conflicts, and attitudes supportive of sexual dominance over women. The data did not, however, support clinical theories regarding sexual repression or impulse-control problems among potential pedophiles.

Preschoolers' sexual behavior at daycare centers: an epidemiological study.

The frequency of sexual behaviors in a population of preschoolers (n = 251) attending Swedish daycare centers was studied using a questionnaire given to the staff. Some behaviors turned out to be frequently occurring, like searching for body contact and responding to such contact. However, several behaviors were very uncommon (1% or fewer): touching an adult's genitals; attempting to make the adult touch the child's genitals; using objects against own or other child's genitals/anus; to masturbate obsessively, without pleasure or in a way that caused pain. Other behaviors occurred more frequently but were still uncommon (less than 2% of the children displayed such a behavior "sometimes" or "often/daily"): exhibiting own genitals; playing sexually explorative games; initiating games with a similarity to adult sexual activity; using sexual words; attempting to touch a woman's breast. Only masturbation and clinging body contact were positively correlated with behavioral disturbance. The correlations between age and single behaviors may be summarized as manifestations of the process of socialization. The results offer an incipient frame of reference for statistically normal expected sexual behaviors in preschoolers at daycare centers. The rarity of certain behaviors implies that their occurrence in an individual case may necessitate special clinical attention.

Experimental assessments of behavioral and anatomical components of female chacma baboon (Papio ursinus) sexual attractiveness.

Two experiments were carried out in order to separate the effects of the behavioral and the anatomical components of female sexual attractiveness in baboons. In the first experiment, two ovariectomized females were given increasing dosages of exogenous estradiol benzoate, and data were collected on their behavior as well as on male sexual arousal as assessed by the occurrence of coagulated seminal emissions of the type that result from masturbation. Male sexual arousal levels increased positively with the females' perineal swellings and appeared relatively unrelated to the females' behavior. In the second experiment, data were collected from five different groups of males in a systematic fashion across the period of a full menstrual cycle for their varied stimulus female partners. Behavior observations were carried out on the five different stimulus females, and ratings also were made of fluctuations in their perineal tumescence. The results of this experiment make it clear that male sexual arousal fluctuated across the study cycles in a fashion very similar to that of the perineal swellings of the stimulus females. Behavior was shown during all phases of the cycle, and, although it may have had a positive influence on male arousal during the follicular phase of the female's cycle, it had no apparent effect during the luteal phase. These results taken together establish for the first time that an estrogen stimulated female perineum per se has the potential to sexually arouse the male baboon. In addition, the data suggest that, although behavior may exert a positive effect on male arousal, in the absence of an estrogen stimulated perineum it is not sufficient to arouse males to masturbate. Finally the results establish that, although intact females appear to show behavior increases which may be arousing to males around the time of ovulation, these behaviors do not have to be shown by a female in order to arouse a male, provided she is swollen.

Treatment acceptability ratings for sexual offenders: effect of diagnosis and offense.

Case description methodology was used to obtain treatment acceptability ratings for mentally retarded and nondisabled (normal) sex offenders across three different offenses (masturbation, rape, and child fondling) and eight interventions. For both diagnostic groups, social-sexual skills training (SST) was the most acceptable treatment except in cases of rape, fondling of a minor, and public masturbation. For these offenses, SST was as acceptable as aversive treatments and incarceration. The addition of a positive treatment component to a preexisting aversive intervention did not result in significantly different acceptability ratings relative to ratings of aversive interventions alone. Respondent's history as a victim of sexual abuse did not affect treatment acceptability ratings for prison, medication, or use of noxious odors.

Sex steroids and sexual desire in a man with a novel mutation of aromatase gene and hypogonadism.

Sexual behavior was investigated by a sexological interview in a man with aromatase deficiency and hypogonadism. The study was performed at the end of a long testosterone treatment, during transdermal estradiol treatment and during estradiol and testosterone associated treatment. Sexual behavior did not show abnormalities. As assessed by a sexological interview and by a sexological questionnaire gender-identity was male, sexual orientation was heterosexual and libido was normal. Sexual function was limited to masturbation and was seemingly unaffected by testosterone or estradiol alone; only the associated treatment induced a great increase in libido and in frequency of masturbation and sexual fantasies when both testosterone and estradiol reached the range of normality. Sexual behavior is mainly under the control of cognitive functions in men, but sex steroids may modulate some aspects of male sexuality. Our findings suggest that in men estrogens could play a role in sexual activity.

Successful pregnancy with sperm retrieved from the bladder after the introduction of a low-electrolyte solution for retrograde ejaculation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the safety and efficacy of the introduction of a low-electrolyte solution into the bladder before masturbation for sperm recovery in patients with retrograde ejaculation. DESIGN: Two case reports. SETTING: Assisted reproduction practice at a university hospital. PATIENT(S): Two men with retrograde ejaculation. INTERVENTION(S): A 0.32-mol/L glucose solution or Ham's modified F-10 medium (GIBCO, Grand Island, NY) with 10% serum was introduced into the urinary bladder before masturbation. The retrieved sperm were used for IUI. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): The motility of retrieved sperm, achievement of pregnancy, and outcome of pregnancy. RESULT(S): In patient 1, the motility rate of sperm retrieved from the bladder after the introduction of Ham's modified F-10 medium was higher than that after the introduction of a glucose solution. The patient's wife did not become pregnant during 10 IUI cycles after treatment with Ham's modified F-10 medium. However, she became pregnant during the first IUI cycle after treatment with a glucose solution and was delivered of healthy twin infants. The wife of patient 2 also became pregnant during the first IUI cycle after treatment with a glucose solution and was delivered of a healthy female infant. CONCLUSION(S): The introduction of a glucose solution appears to be a safe and simple method for sperm recovery in patients with retrograde ejaculation.

Long-term cosmetic and sexual outcome of hypospadias surgery: norm related study in adolescence.

PURPOSE: Even if performed early in life, hypospadias surgery may have a significant impact on self-esteem and sexual behavior in adolescence. We evaluated the long-term cosmetic and sexual outcomes of hypospadias surgery performed in childhood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A detailed questionnaire was mailed to 33 patients with hypospadias who were 18 to 26 years old and had undergone the first operation at age 6 years or younger. It was also mailed to 50 age matched controls. RESULTS: A total of 22 patients (66.7%) and 38 controls (76.0%) returned the questionnaire. Mean age in the hypospadias and control groups was 20.6 and 21.0 years, respectively. Eight of the 22 patients had mild hypospadias and 11 had severe hypospadias. Severity was unknown in 3 patients. Age at the first and final operations was 31 to 75 (mean 46) and 35 to 81 months (mean 53). The number of operation was 1 in 10 patients, 2 in 10 and 3 in 2. The rate of dissatisfaction with penile appearance was slightly higher in the hypospadias group than in the control group (40.9% vs 34.2%). The single reason for dissatisfaction in the hypospadias group was inadequate penile size, whereas in the control group penile size, phimosis and curvature were the major reasons for dissatisfaction (69.2%, 46.2% and 23.1%, respectively). Experience with masturbation (100% and 97.4%) and sexual intercourse (52.4% and 55.3%), and mean age at first masturbation (13.4 and 13.0 years) and first sexual intercourse (16.6 and 17.3 years) were similar in the hypospadias and control groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Although patients with hypospadias had a slightly higher rate of dissatisfaction with penile size, their sexual behavior was not different from that in control subjects.

The hemodynamic pathophysiology of impotence following blunt trauma to the erect penis.

A total of 19 patients provided a history of impotence following blunt trauma to the erect penis during intercourse or masturbation, or after accidents. Corporeal veno-occlusive dysfunction was the most common hemodynamic abnormality (16 of 19 patients, or 84%). A site-specific leak, which consisted of abrupt filling of the dorsal vein and/or corpus spongiosum from a focal site on the penile shaft, was demonstrated in 15 patients (79%). Cavernous artery insufficiency was found less often (7 of 19 patients, or 37%). A focal mid shaft cavernous artery occlusion was demonstrated in 5 patients (28%). It is hypothesized that the aforementioned hemodynamic abnormalities are caused by tunica and intracavernous vasculature injuries induced by the marked short-term pressure increases, which approach or exceed the tunica tensile strength during acute abrupt loading of the erect penis. This hypothesis is supported by direct recording of intracavernous pressures that exceeded 450 mm. Hg in response to angulation and manual compression of the penile shaft. Further evidence was created by a biomechanical model that was based on previously published intracavernous pressure--circumference patient data during dynamic infusion pharmacocavernosometry. Using a typical patient data set a 60% diminution of circumference at the site of abrupt loading was calculated to induce a 15% increase in circumference in the nonloaded portion of the penile shaft and an elevated intracavernous pressure exceeding 900 mm. Hg. The site-specific hemodynamic abnormalities were found to occur not only in patients with a classical penile fracture history but also in patients with injuries during masturbation or following accidents who had no acute penile swelling or ecchymosis. Thus, the erect penis is at risk for injury during any acute loading situation. It is likely that this erect trauma-induced hemodynamic pathology occurs more frequently than previously appreciated and that this type of impotence may be the underlying basis for many cases of idiopathic Peyronie's disease.

Orgasm-induced prolactin secretion: feedback control of sexual drive?

Recent studies from our laboratory have investigated the hormonal response to various forms of sexual stimulation, including film, masturbation, and coitus in both men and women. This series of studies clearly demonstrated that plasma prolactin (PRL) concentrations are substantially increased for over 1h following orgasm (masturbation and coitus conditions) in both men and women, but unchanged following sexual arousal without orgasm. Here we discuss evidence suggesting that the PRL response to orgasm may play an important role in the control of acute sexual arousal following orgasm. Supporting this position, chronic elevations of PRL (hyperprolactinemia) produce pronounced reductions in animal sexual activity, and significant reduction of libido and gonadal function in both men and women. These data suggest that PRL may represent a peripheral regulatory factor for reproductive function, and/or a feedback mechanism that signals CNS centres controlling sexual arousal and behaviour. Thus, we propose a theoretical model of the role of PRL as a neuroendocrine reproductive reflex.

Naltrexone-induced augmentation of sexual response in men.

BACKGROUND: To ascertain the role of endogenous opioids in sexual response, naltrexone, an opiate receptor antagonist, was administered to men, and its effect on selected self-report measures of sexual response to masturbation was recorded. METHODS: The data are based on results from 20 healthy, sexually active (alone or with a partner) men, aged 20-29 years, who ingested naltrexone (25 mg/day x 3) or placebo in a randomized, double-blind crossover design. There was at least a 14-day interval between drug and placebo treatment. Between 18 and 22 h after the most recent dose of drug or placebo, subjects viewed sexually explicit videos in privacy for 2 h. They were instructed to masturbate and have as many orgasms as desired. The following three different self-report measures of their responses were recorded: number of orgasms; intensity of sexual arousal, and orgasmic intensity. RESULTS: Under the naltrexone condition, the volunteers experienced a significantly greater mean number of orgasms (3.4 +/- 0.2 SEM) than under the placebo condition (2.6 +/- 0.3). The total number of orgasms was 67 under the naltrexone condition and 51 under the placebo condition. At the first orgasm, the measure of intensity of arousal was significantly greater in the naltrexone (3.9 +/- 0.2) than placebo (3.4 +/- 0.2) condition, and the measure of orgasmic intensity was significantly greater in the naltrexone (3.7 +/- 0.2) than in the placebo (3.0 +/- 0.3) condition. CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides evidence that endogenous opioids modulate orgasmic response and the perceived intensity of sexual arousal and orgasm in men. The findings suggest that naltrexone could be clinically useful in cases of inhibited sexual desire and erectile dysfunction.

[Diversity and meaning of masculine phallic palaeolithic images in Western Europe].

The archaeological record necessary to understand the sexual behaviour of our ancestors from Upper Palaeolithic (38.000-8.500 B.C.) is limited. Traditionally the ethnographic information about sexuality and the relations between sexes derived from comparitions with current primitive human groups have been considered very important, although they have been evaluated more from a social and anthropological rather than biological perspective. Ice age art art, both rock and portable, is a reflection of the behaviour of palaeolithic human groups. The purpose of this text focuses on understanding the types of representations and sexual attitudes during the Upper Palaeolithic, as reflected from masculine images of phallic character. Practices of foreskin retraction, some phalli possibly circumcised, copulative acts, expressions of masturbation, instruments that have been likely been used for masturbation and other sexual scenes, some of which are difficult to interpretate, show that the sexual behaviour of the human groups of the Upper Palaeolithic were similar to ours, both from a biological and physiological viewpoint.

Volunteer bias, sexuality, and personality.

Participants were recruited either for a study of sexual attitudes and behavior or for a study of attitudes and behavior without mention of sexuality. Both groups answered questions about their sexual behavior and completed the Self-Monitoring Scale, the Balanced F Scale, and the Social Responsibility Scale. No differences were found as a function of recruitment technique in the mean reports of subjects' sexual behavior, but substantial differences were found in some of the relationships between these personality variables and sexual behavior reports as a function of recruitment technique; the correlation between the balanced F Scale score and masturbation frequency for females was +0.61 for those recruited for a study of sexual behavior and -0.61 for those recruited for a study of general attitudes and behavior. In both groups, larger correlations were found between female sexual behavior and personality than between male sexual behavior and personality. In all groups, the Self-Monitoring Scale was significantly correlated with masturbation frequency. The results are discussed in terms of self-selection bias and self-presentation bias, both of which may affect research on sexuality.

Pheromonal influences on sociosexual behavior in men.

This study tested whether synthesized human male pheromones increase the sociosexual behavior of men. Thirty-eight heterosexual men, ages 26-42, completed a 2-week baseline period and 6-week placebo-controlled, double-blind trial testing a pheromone "designed to improve the romance in their lives." Each subject kept daily behavioral records for 6 sociosexual behaviors: petting/affection/kissing, formal dates, informal dates, sleeping next to a romantic partner, sexual intercourse, and self-stimulation to ejaculation (masturbation) and FAXed them each week. Significantly more pheromone than placebo users increased above baseline in sexual intercourse and sleeping with a romantic partner. There was a tendency for more pheromone than placebo users to increase above baseline in petting/affection/kissing, and informal dates, but not in self-stimulation to ejaculation or in formal dates. A significantly larger proportion of pheromone than placebo users increased in > or = 2 and > or = 3 of the 5 sociosexual behaviors involving a female partner. Thus, there was a significant increase in male sociosexual behaviors in which a woman's sexual interest and cooperation plays a role but not in male masturbation which involves only the man. These initial data need replication but suggest that human male pheromones affected the sexual attractiveness of men to women.

Penile vibratory stimulation and electroejaculation in the treatment of ejaculatory dysfunction.

The purpose of this review is to present the current understanding of penile vibratory stimulation (PVS) and electroejaculation (EEJ) procedures and its clinical use in men with ejaculatory dysfunction. Unfortunately, the record of treating such individuals has been quite poor, but within recent years development and refinement of PVS and EEJ in men with spinal cord injury (SCI) has significantly enhanced the prospects for treatment of ejaculatory dysfunction. The majority of spinal cord injured men are not able to produce antegrade ejaculation by masturbation or sexual stimulation. However, approximately 80% of all spinal cord injured men with an intact ejaculatory reflex arc (above T10) can obtain antegrade ejaculation with PVS. Electroejaculation may be successful in obtaining ejaculate from men with all types of SCI, including men who do not have major components of the ejaculatory reflex arc. Because vibratory stimulation is very simple in use, non-invasive, it does not require anaesthesia and is preferred by the patients when compared with EEJ, PVS is recommended to be the first choice of treatment in spinal cord injured men. Furthermore, EEJ has been successfully used to induce ejaculation in men with multiple sclerosis and diabetic neuropathy. Any other conditions which affect the ejaculatory mechanism of the central and/or peripheral nervous system including surgical nerve injury may be treated successfully with EEJ. Finally, for sperm retrieval and sperm cryopreservation before intensive anticancer therapy in pubertal boys, PVS and EEJ have been successfully performed in patients who failed to obtain ejaculation by masturbation. Nearly all data concerning semen characteristics in men with ejaculatory dysfuntion originate from spinal cord injured men. Semen analyses demonstrate low sperm motility rates in the majority of spinal cord injured men. The data give evidence of a decline in spermatogenesis and motility of ejaculated spermatozoa shortly after (few weeks) an acute SCI. Furthermore, it is suggested that some factors in the seminal plasma and/or disordered storage of spermatozoa in the seminal vesicles are mainly responsible for the impaired semen profiles in men with chronic SCI. Home insemination with semen obtained by penile vibratory and introduced intravaginally in order to achieve successful pregnancies may be an option for some spinal cord injured men and their partners. The majority of men will further enhance their fertility potential when using either penile vibratory or EEJ combined with assisted reproduction techniques such as intrauterine insemination or in-vitro fertilization with or without intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

Sexual diversity in urban Norwegians.

The purpose of this study is to describe homosexual and heterosexual experiences in terms of sexual fantasies, sexual attraction, sexual conduct, and falling in love in an urban Norwegian population. In 1997, a random sample of 5,000 persons (18-49 years) was drawn from the population register in Oslo to participate in a sexual behavior survey. Data collection was carried out by means of postal questionnaires and 45% responded. The results indicated that exclusive homosexuality was rare in the population. One exception was the prevalence of homosexual fantasies in women. Compared to respondents who had had exclusively heterosexual contact, respondents reporting bisexual contacts had a significantly higher number of lifetime sex partners, higher frequency of anal and oral sex and masturbation, and lower age at orgasm and masturbation debut. What significantly separated the groups of exclusive heterosexuals, bisexuals, and exclusive homosexuals were attitudes towards various expressions of sexuality and number of lifetime sex partners.
