"This essay identifies and analyzes the four most important impacts of postwar migration to Western Europe. First, early postwar immigration facilitated the rapid and sustained expansion of the domestic economy. Second, it eventually precipitated major changes in domestic immigration and citizenship regimes. Third, the influx of millions of immigrants, refugees, asylees, and migrant workers profoundly and permanently altered the social and cultural bases of West European societies. And finally, postwar immigration exacerbated the social tensions that helped to undermine the consensual foundations of the postwar political order."
"Unemployment [in Australia] is affected by two factors: increases in the productivity of labour and increases in its supply. Both of these factors could, in principle, be offset by strong economic growth. But, if the economy grows fast enough to accommodate both productivity gains and the addition of migrants to the labour force, it will draw in more imports and the balance of trade will deteriorate. Economic growth of around two per cent per annum may be all that we can sustain without increasing our foreign debt. This level of economic growth is not enough to reduce unemployment in the face of any net immigration (or any growth in labour productivity)."

"The first victims of Asia's economic crisis are the millions of migrant workers whose labour is no longer required by the region's erstwhile ¿tigers'. Their repatriation raises serious political, economic and social issues for citizens and states in both home and host countries.... The issue of economic migration needs to be assessed if the possible socio-economic consequences of the present crisis are to be fully understood."
