Magnetic-field induced spin-Peierls instability in strongly frustrated quantum spin lattices.

For a class of frustrated antiferromagnetic spin lattices (in particular, the square-kagomé and kagomé lattices) we discuss the impact of recently discovered exact eigenstates on the stability of the lattice against distortions. These eigenstates consist of independent localized magnons embedded in a ferromagnetic environment and become ground states in high magnetic fields. For appropriate lattice distortions fitting to the structure of the localized magnons the lowering of magnetic energy can be calculated exactly and is proportional to the displacement of atoms leading to a spin-Peierls lattice instability. Since these localized states are present only for high magnetic fields, this instability might be driven by magnetic-field. The hysteresis of the spin-Peierls transition is also discussed.

Frustration-induced eta inversion in the S=1/2 bond-alternating spin chain.

We study the frustration-induced enhancement of the incommensurate correlation for a bond-alternating quantum spin chain in a magnetic field, which is associated with a quasi-one-dimensional organic compound F5PNN. We investigate the temperature dependence of the staggered susceptibilities by using the density matrix renormalization group, and then find that the incommensurate correlation becomes dominant in a certain range of the magnetic field. We also discuss the mechanism of this enhancement on the basis of the mapping to the effective S=1/2 XXZ chain and a possibility of the field-induced incommensurate long-range order.

Structural anomalies and multiferroic behavior in magnetically frustrated TbMn2O5.

We have studied the magnetostructural phase diagram of multiferroic TbMn2O5 as a function of temperature and magnetic field by neutron diffraction. Dielectric and magnetic anomalies are found to be associated with steps in the magnetic propagation vector, including a rare example of a commensurate-incommensurate transition on cooling below 24 K, and in the structural parameters. The geometrically frustrated magnetic structure is stabilized by "canted antiferroelectric" displacements of the Mn3+ ions, an example of the magnetic Jahn-Teller effect. The Tb moments order ferromagnetically at low temperatures in an applied field, while the Mn magnetic structure is largely unchanged.

Geometric frustration, electronic instabilities, and charge singlets in Y2Nb2O7.

Pyrochlore Y2Nb2O7 is studied with density functional calculations. In the ideal pyrochlore structure, no magnetism is found, consistent with experiments, but the band structure is metallic. The phonon dispersions show unstable modes corresponding to charge instabilities. These frustrated instabilities lead to a metal-insulator transition with the formation of "charge singlets". Partial substitution of Ti for Nb results in moment formation due to the occurrence of Ti3+.

Exact ground states of a frustrated 2D magnet: deconfined fractional excitations at a first-order quantum phase transition.

We introduce a frustrated spin 1/2 Hamiltonian which is an extension of the two dimensional J1-J2 Heisenberg model. The ground states of this model are exactly obtained at a first-order quantum phase transition between two valence bond crystals. At this point, the low energy excitations are deconfined spinons and spin-charge separation occurs under doping in the limit of low concentration of holes. In addition, this point is characterized by the proliferation of topological defects.

Competing spin phases in geometrically frustrated magnetic molecules.

We identify a class of zero-dimensional classical and quantum Heisenberg spin systems exhibiting anomalous behavior in an external magnetic field B similar to that found for the geometrically frustrated kagome lattice of classical spins. Our calculations for the isotropic Heisenberg model show the emergence of a pronounced minimum in the differential susceptibility dM/dB at B(sat)/3 as the temperature T is raised from 0 K for structures based on corner-sharing triangles, specifically the octahedron, cuboctahedron, and icosidodecahedron. As the first experimental evidence we note that the giant Keplerate magnetic molecule {Mo(72)Fe(30)} (Fe(3+) ions on the 30 vertices of an icosidodecahedron) exhibits this behavior. For low T when B approximately B(sat)/3 two competing families of spin configurations exist of which one behaves magnetically "stiff" leading to a reduction of dM/dB.

Uniformly frustrated XY model without a vortex-pattern ordering.

The uniformly frustrated XY model with f=1/3 on a dice lattice is shown to possess an accidental degeneracy of its ground states so well developed that the difference between the free energies of fluctuations does not lead to the stabilization of a particular vortex pattern down to zero temperature. Nonetheless, at low temperatures the system is characterized by a finite helicity modulus whose vanishing (at a finite temperature) is related to the dissociation of half-vortex pairs.

Quest for frustration driven distortion in Y2(Mo2)O(7).

We investigated the nature of the freezing in the geometrically frustrated Heisenberg spin glass Y2(Mo2)O(7) by measuring the temperature dependence of the static internal magnetic field distribution above the spin-glass temperature, Tg, using the muon spin relaxation technique. The evolution of the field distribution cannot be explained by changes in the spin susceptibility alone and suggests a lattice deformation. This possibility is addressed by numerical simulations of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magnetoelastic coupling at T > 0.

Realization of fully frustrated Josephson-junction arrays with cold atoms.

Fully frustrated Josephson-junction arrays (FF-JJA's) exhibit a subtle compound phase transition in which an Ising transition associated with discrete broken translational symmetry and a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition associated with quasi-long-range phase coherence occur nearly simultaneously. In this Letter we discuss a cold-atom realization of the FF-JJA system. We demonstrate that both orders can be studied by standard momentum-distribution-function measurements and present numerical results, based on a successful self-consistent spin-wave approximation, that illustrate the expected behavior of observables.

Magnetic density of states at low energy in geometrically frustrated systems.

Using muon-spin-relaxation measurements we show that the pyrochlore compound Gd(2)Ti(2)O(7), in its magnetically ordered phase below approximately 1 K, displays persistent spin dynamics down to temperatures as low as 20 mK. The characteristics of the induced muon relaxation can be accounted for by a scattering process involving two magnetic excitations, with a density of states characterized by an upturn at low energy and a small gap depending linearly on the temperature. We propose that such a density of states is a generic feature of geometrically frustrated magnetic materials.

Zero-field incommensurate spin-Peierls phase with interchain frustration in TiOCl.

We report on the magnetic, thermodynamic, and optical properties of the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets TiOCl and TiOBr, which have been discussed as spin-Peierls compounds. The observed deviations from canonical spin-Peierls behavior, e.g., the existence of two distinct phase transitions, have been attributed previously to strong orbital fluctuations. This can be ruled out by our optical data of the orbital excitations. We show that the frustration of the interchain interactions in the bilayer structure gives rise to incommensurate order with a subsequent lock-in transition to a commensurate dimerized state. In this way, a single driving force, the spin-Peierls mechanism, induces two separate transitions.

Na2V3O7: a frustrated nanotubular system with spin-1/2 diamond ring geometry.

Following the recent discussion on the puzzling nature of the interactions in the nanotubular system Na(2)V(3)O(7), we present a detailed ab initio microscopic analysis of its electronic and magnetic properties. By means of a nontrivial downfolding study we propose an effective model in terms of tubes of nine-site rings with the geometry of a spin-diamond necklace with frustrated inter-ring interactions. We show that this model provides a quantitative account of the observed magnetic behavior.

Mott transition from a spin liquid to a Fermi liquid in the spin-frustrated organic conductor kappa-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3.

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of the organic Mott insulator kappa-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3, a model system of the spin liquid on triangular lattice, has been investigated by 1H NMR and resistivity measurements. The spin-liquid phase is persistent before the Mott transition to the metal or superconducting phase under pressure. At the Mott transition, the spin fluctuations are rapidly suppressed and the Fermi-liquid features are observed in the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate and resistivity. The characteristic curvature of the Mott boundary in the phase diagram highlights a crucial effect of the spin frustration on the Mott transition.

Spiral terraces and spin frustration in layered antiferromagnetic Cr(001) films.

We have successfully fabricated a novel type of high-density spiral terraces on Cr(001) films. The influence of nanoscale spiral terraces on layered antiferromagnetic ordering of Cr(001) films has been studied at room temperature by direct imaging of both topographic and magnetic structures using spin-polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Spin frustration and asymmetric magnetic ordering due to dense spiral terraces are observed. Sizable modification of the layered antiferromagnetic order is found to be originating from the topological asymmetry as confirmed by the continuum micromagnetic simulation.

Excitation of frustrated translation and nonadiabatic adatom hopping induced by inelastic tunneling.

The dynamics of lateral manipulation for cobalt/Cu(111) has been investigated combining the model of vibrational heating and first-principles density functional calculations. The frustrated translational mode responsible for lateral excitation is identified as a vibrational resonance involving a concerted motion between the adatom and surface phonons. The calculated frequency shows good agreement with the onset energy for adatom hopping induced by inelastic tunneling. Simulation of the power law, compared with experiment, suggests that the atom hopping overcomes a nonadiabatic barrier due to the nonequilibrium local heating of the translational mode.

Kondo screening in a magnetically frustrated nanostructure: exact results on a stable non-fermi-liquid phase.

Triangular symmetry stabilizes a novel non-Fermi-liquid phase in the three-impurity Kondo model with frustrating antiferromagnetic interactions between half-integer impurity spins. The phase arises without fine-tuning of couplings, and is stable against magnetic fields and particle-hole symmetry breaking. We find a conformal field theory describing this phase, verify it using the numerical renormalization group, and extract various exact, universal low-energy properties. Signatures predicted in electrical transport may be testable in scanning tunneling microscopy or quantum-dot experiments.

Shape-induced frustration of hexagonal order in polyhedral colloids.

The effect of a nonspherical particle shape and shape polydispersity on the structure of densely packed hard colloidal particles was studied in real space by confocal microscopy. We show that the first layer at the wall of concentrated size-monodisperse but shape-polydisperse polyhedral colloids exhibits significant deviations from a hexagonal lattice. These deviations are identified as bond-orientational fluctuations which lead to percolating "mismatch lines." While the shape-induced geometrical frustration of the hexagonal symmetry suppresses translational order, bond-orientational order is clearly retained, indicating a hexaticlike structure of the polyhedral colloids.

Observation of stripe mobility in a dipolar frustrated ferromagnet.

We have discovered two novel aspects of the stripe-domain to paramagnetic transition in perpendicularly magnetized Fe films on Cu(100). First, the width of the stripes carrying oppositely oriented spins decreases, close to the transition temperature, with a power law. Second, in a small temperature interval close to the transition temperature, the stripes--which form stationary patterns at low temperatures--become mobile. Various theoretical works have predicted stripe mobility in similar frustrated systems but no direct proof of this phenomenon has been reported so far.
