Multiple usage of the CD PLUS/UNIX system: performance in practice.

In August 1994, the CD PLUS/Ovid literature retrieval system based on UNIX was activated for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. There were up to 1,200 potential users. Tests were carried out to determine the extent to which searching for literature was affected by other end users of the system. In the tests, search times and download times were measured in relation to a varying number of continuously active workstations. Results indicated a linear relationship between search times and the number of active workstations. In the "worst case" situation with sixteen active workstations, the time required for record retrieval increased by a factor of sixteen and downloading time by a factor of sixteen over the "best case" of no other active stations. However, because the worst case seldom, if ever, happens in real life, these results are considered acceptable.

Multilevel library instruction for emerging nursing roles.

As new nursing roles emerge that involve greater decision making than in the past, added responsibility for outcomes and cost control, and increased emphasis on primary care, the information-seeking skills needed by nurses change. A search of library and nursing literature indicates that there is little comprehensive library instruction covering all levels of nursing programs: undergraduate, returning registered nurses, and graduate students. The University of Florida is one of the few places that has such a multilevel, course-integrated curriculum in place for all entrants into the nursing program. Objectives have been developed for each stage of learning. The courses include instruction in the use of the online public access catalog, printed resources, and electronic databases. A library classroom equipped with the latest technology enables student interaction with electronic databases. This paper discusses the program and several methods used to evaluate it.

Evaluation of a telepathology system between Boston (USA) and Dijon (France): glass slides versus telediagnostic TV-monitor.

The objective of this work was to compare diagnoses achieved through the traditional methods of current pathology practice versus diagnoses achieved through a selection of image on a telediagnostic TV-monitor. The Kappa coefficient between the two protocols of k = 0.26 SE(k) = 0.06 z = k/SE(k) = 4.3 (p < 0.001) allows us to conclude that there is a good reliability between video and glass slide diagnoses.

Determining educational needs for the biomedical library customer: an analysis of end-user searching in MEDLINE.

The analysis of CD Plus usage logs provides an opportunity to determine specific areas where searchers are "missing opportunities" by misusing, or failing to use, system specific features. This paper describes a methodology, based on transaction log analysis, to provide automated, continuous analysis of end-user searching. The data collected in this process can then be used to enhance and provide insight into the educational needs of users.

A quantitative method for measuring clinical user journal needs: a pilot study using CD Plus MEDLINE usage statistics.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a quantitative method for measuring clinical user journal needs based on an analysis of bibliographic search results. DESIGN: Retrospective bibliometric comparison of citation selections generated by clinical users on shared workstations throughout the Medical Center. MEASURES: Number of times each journal was identified by clinical users during multiple bibliographic search sessions. RESULTS: Clinical users identified 2,078 journal articles. The top 200 journal titles accounted for 55% of the clinical users' journal needs. Of the 901 unique journal titles identified, 489 (54%) were identified only once. CONCLUSION: Our pilot study demonstrates that analysis of bibliographic search results can be used to identify clinical user journal needs. Such a method could also be used to estimate user requirements for on-line, full-text medical journals.

[MEDLINE on compact disk as an information source at the Medical School Library in Novi Sad].

The transformation of the Library at the Medical Faculty of Novi Sad into a modern information center necessitated the introduction of an up-to-date technology and enforced the use of the latest information sources among which MEDLINE medical database is the most famous one. In the studied period, January 1993-current, 200 searches have been performed on the basis of which the following parameters were analyzed: institution, occupation, and degree of the user, purpose and accuracy of the order, relevant period, number and format of the references, assessment of the search quality and the quality of the library staff services. The analysis proved the initial belief that MEDLINE is a remarkably valuable data base necessary for medical libraries.
