Spontaneous facial expressions occurring at onset of focal seizure activity.

Examination of the simultaneously recorded EEG and video taped behavior of patients during seizures activated by pentylenetetrazol-bemigride revealed a variety of spontaneous facial expressions at the electroclinical seizure onset. Neutral and sad expressions were observed most often, followed in frequency by expressions of fear, surprise, and happiness. Expressions of disgust and anger were rare. There was no consistent relation between side of seizure onset and type of spontaneous facial expression.

Human circulating dopamine-beta-hydroxylase and epilepsy.

The activity of circulatory dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) in humans is shown to be lower in some epileptic subjects than in normal subjects. The activity of the enzymes was found to be dramatically low in subjects who experienced an epileptic seizure 24 hrs before DBH activity was determined. The activity varied through the course of epileptic seizures induced by a convulsant drugs and these variations might be due to the "en masse" changes of the sympathetic nervous system.

Posttetanic and frequency potentiation in slices of rat olfactory cortex.

The electrical tetanization of the lateral olfactory tract at a frequency of 30/sec for 15 sec elicited the development of posttetanic potentiation of populational EPSP and IPSP in surviving slices of rat olfactory cortex. The stimulation of the lateral olfactory tract by series of stimuli at a constant frequency of 10/sec and with intervals of 4-5 sec between series facilitates the emergence of the phenomenon of frequency potentiation. The data obtained indicate that such forms of functional plasticity as posttetanic and frequency potentiation are manifested in the pyriform cortex.
