Examination of 80 alpha-helical proteins and domains demonstrates that they contain from 1 to more than 20 completely buried (water-inaccessible) polar side chains. As a rule the latter have partners for H-bonding but the resulting H-bond system is often not exhaustive. Basing on statistical analysis, we determined the optimal number of H-bonds for every type of polar side chain, and discuss the structural role of vacant donors and acceptors. About half of the H-bonds formed by buried side chains pertain to interhelix contacts of the (side chain)-(side chain) and (side chain)-(main chain) types. Such interactions appear to be a most important factor determining the mutual arrangement of alpha-helices in proteins. Analysis of the frequency of occurrence of various interacting pairs reveals that these interactions are selective.
Results of comparative morphological and gene analyses of the cestode Proteocephalus thymalli, an intestine parasite of the lakes Hovsogol (Thymallus arcticus nigrescens) and Lake Baikal graylings (Thymallus arcticus baicalensis) are presented for the first time. The results indicate that representatives of the P. thymalli from these fishes are really two different species.

The aim of this study was to define the most interesting parameters useful for a clinical application of acoustic distortion products (mainly, F1 and F2 primaries frequencies and levels). The most interesting F1 and F2 primaries level in order to separate subjects with a normally-hearing function and patients with a sensorineural hearing loss is 50 dBHL. This result can be explained by some physiological properties of cochlear mechanisms.

Founded in 1877, the Ottoman Red Crescent Society rendered a lot of important services in military and civil areas in the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Red Crescent Society not only gave health services for the soldiers, but it also attempted to obey the international acts signed for the war captives and to rescue them together with the counties involved under the supervision of the international Red Cross. In tbe civilian area, the Ottoman Red Crescent Society also played an active role to meet the casualties' needs, such as food, clothes, and accommodation following natural disaster like earthquake, flood, fire etc. The Ottoman Red Crescent Society published a rnonthly newsletter called Osmanli Hilâl-i Ahmer Mecmuasi to announce its services more effectively to the public since 15 September 1921 (12 Muharrem 1346). The publication of the newsletter continued as Türkiye Hilâl-i Ahmer Mecmuasi after the 15th issue. Starting with the 85th issue on September 15th, 1928 (30 Rebiülevvel 1347) it was printed with Latin alphabet instead of Arabic letters. A brief translation in French and in English exist in the end of each issue.

Based on the survey and experimental results, this paper analyzed the time-sequence relationship between crop growth and rainfall distribution, and the potential water use rate, water supply-demand equilibrium and deficit features of different upland crops in the loess hilly zone of south Ningxia. The model of water ecological adaptability index (WEAI) was proposed to evaluate these features of upland crops. The results showed that autumn crops were superior to summer crops in the coupling characteristics between crop growth and rainfall distribution. There were also differences in rainfall potential use rate among crops, the order being: perennial crops > root and stem crops > grain crops; autumn crops > summer crops. The water satiety rate and water ecological adaptability were higher for autumn crops than for summer crops, and higher in rainy years than in dry years. In line with water ecological adaptability index, the 6 main crops could be put in order of millet > potato > panic > flax > pea > spring wheat. The results of this study may provide theoretic basis for drawing up the decision scheme of cropping system in upland regions.
To assist the interpretation of STR DNA typing results from forensic casework samples containing mixtures, the range of heterozygous allele peak height and peak area ratios (HR) and stutter percentages (stutter %) for the loci comprised in the AmpFlSTR Profiler Plus (PP) kit were assessed on 468 database and 275 casework single source samples. Stutter % medians were similar for database and casework samples, ranging from 2% to 7%. The upper limit of the stutter value range was 16%, calculated as median +3 SD, although lower locus-specific values could be used. HR medians were 93 +/- 6.5% for database samples, 88 +/- 12% for casework samples. For casework samples, the maximum signal imbalance noted was 52%, calculated as median -3 SD. No significant difference was observed between peak height and peak area calculated values. This study shows the importance of selecting the proper reference database for the establishment of HR threshold values.
