Flexoelectric surface switching of bistable nematic devices.

We report on a novel method of dynamically controlling the boundary conditions at the surface of a nematic liquid crystal using a surface flexoelectric effect. By moving the surface directors we show that one is able to manipulate defects which lie near the surface. This can be used to produce switching of a nematic liquid-crystal device between two states with very similar free energies. This results in a bistable device that can retain either state with no applied voltage. Switching between the states occurs when the movement of the surface directors rotates those in the bulk which are then able to create or annihilate defects which lie near the surface of the device.

Dissipative enhancement of the response of a bistable noisy oscillator to external driving.

A study of the linear response susceptibility of a noisy bistable oscillator as a function of damping is carried out using the method of moments. It is found that this dependence, counterintuitively, has a nonmonotonic character and shows a maximum when the driving frequency is comparable to the thermal interwell hopping rate. The possible mechanism responsible for the occurrence of such dissipative sensitivity enhancement is proposed.

Ferroelectric order of parallel bistable hydrogen bonds.

A new NH.N hydrogen-bonded ferroelectric crystal of [C6H12N2H]+ReO - 4 (dabcoHReO4) exhibits exceptional dielectric properties that result from the unique structure where all the bistable NH...N hydrogen bonds are parallel and directed exactly in the same sense. Consequently, the main structural origin of the spontaneous polarization of the crystal is the identical orientation of the asymmetric NH+...N hydrogen bonds along [001]. This first observation of a ferroelectric with parallel arrangement of the NH+...N bonded aggregates, gives temperature-independent and the highest spontaneous polarization ever reported for an organic or water-soluble substance.

Doubly stochastic coherence via noise-induced symmetry in bistable neural models.

The generation of coherent dynamics due to noise in an activator-inhibitor system describing bistable neural dynamics is investigated. We show that coherence can be induced in deterministically asymmetric regimes via symmetry restoration by multiplicative noise, together with the action of additive noise which induces jumps between the two stable steady states. The phenomenon is thus doubly stochastic, because both noise sources are necessary. This effect can be understood analytically in the frame of a small-noise expansion and is confirmed experimentally in a nonlinear electronic circuit. Finally, we show that spatial coupling enhances this coherent behavior in a form of system-size coherence resonance.

Photoinduced phase transition in an organic radical crystal with room-temperature optical and magnetic bistability.

A phase control by photoirradiation is successfully achieved in a spin-Peierls system of the organic radical crystal, 1,3,5-trithia-2,4,6-triazapentalenyl (TTTA), which exhibits optical and magnetic bistability around room temperature with a large hysteresis loop. A nanosecond laser pulse is found to induce a transition from a diamagnetic low-temperature phase to a paramagnetic high-temperature phase both inside (296 K) and outside (11 K) the hysteresis loop. Comparison of the excitation energy dependence between transition efficiency and photoconductivity suggests that the photoinduced transition is driven by suppression of the spin-Peierls instability by the accumulation of photocarriers.

Dynamics of an ensemble of noisy bistable elements with global time delayed coupling.

The dynamics of an ensemble of bistable elements with global time-delayed coupling under the influence of noise is studied analytically and numerically. Depending on the noise level, the system undergoes ordering transitions and demonstrates multistability. That is, for a strong enough positive feedback it exhibits a nonzero stationary mean-field,and a variety of stable oscillatory mean-field states are accessible for positive and negative feedback. The regularity of the oscillatory states is maximal for a certain noise level; i.e., the system demonstrates coherence resonance. While away from the transition points the system dynamics is well described by a Gaussian approximation, near the bifurcation points a description in terms of a dichotomous theory is more adequate.

Experimental investigation of a bistable system in the presence of noise and delay.

We experimentally analyze the behavior of a non-Markovian bistable system with noise, using a vertical cavity surface emitting laser with time-delayed optoelectronic feedback. The effects of the delayed feedback are observed in the probability distribution of the residence times of the two orthogonal polarization states, and in the polarization-resolved power spectrum. They agree well with recent theoretical predictions based on a two-state model with transition rates depending on an earlier state of the system. We also observe experimentally and explain theoretically that the residence time probability distribution deviates from exponential decay for residence times close to (and smaller than) the delay time.

Beat-wave excitation of plasma waves based on relativistic bistability.

A nonlinear beat-wave regime of plasma wave excitation is considered. Two beat-wave drivers are considered: intensity-modulated laser pulse and density-modulated (microbunched) electron beam. It is shown that a long beat-wave pulse can excite strong plasma waves in its wake even when the beat-wave frequency is detuned from the electron plasma frequency. The wake is caused by the dynamic bistability of the nonlinear plasma wave if the beat-wave amplitude exceeds the analytically calculated threshold. In the context of a microbunched beam driven plasma wakefield accelerator, this excitation regime can be applied to developing a femtosecond electron injector.

Controlled shift of optical bistability hysteresis curve and storage of optical signals in a four-level atomic system.

The dependence of the shift of an optical bistability hysteresis curve on the nonlinear phase shift induced by a controlling light is observed in a four-level atomic system of 87 Rb inside an optical ring cavity. In the process the intensity of the coupling beam keeps constant and the atomic system is operated at near conditions of coherent population trapping due to atomic coherence. The refractive and absorptive chi3 nonlinearities enhanced by atomic coherence provide the physical mechanism of the phenomena. Based on the effects, all-optical flip-flop and storage of optical pulse signals with a low peak power of several tens of microwatts are implemented.

Bistability between different localized structures in nonlinear optics.

We report the observation of different localized structures coexisting for the same parameter values in an extended system. The experimental findings are carried out in a nonlinear optical interferometer and are fully confirmed by numerical simulations. The existence of each kind of localized structure is put in relation to a corresponding delocalized pattern observed. A quantitative evaluation of the range of pump parameter allowing bistability between localized structures is given. The phenomenon reported results to be robust in parameter space.

Single-domain wall propagation and damping mechanism during magnetic switching of bistable amorphous microwires.

The mechanism of nucleation and propagation of a single-domain wall is studied as a function of temperature in bistable Fe-based amorphous microwire with a unique simple domain structure. An extended nucleation-propagation model is proposed with a negative nucleation field. From quantitative analysis of the propagating wall characteristics, a new damping is theoretically introduced as arising from structural relaxation which dominates in the low temperature regime.

Magnetic bistability of Co nanodots.

Size-dependent magnetic single-domain versus vortex state stability of Co/Ru(0001) nanodots is explored with spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, analytical modeling, and micromagnetic simulations. We show that both single-domain and vortex states can be stabilized in a broad region near the phase boundary. The calculated width of the bistability region and temperature dependent heights of the energy barriers between both states agree well with our experimental findings.

Frequency bistability of a semiconductor laser under a frequency-dependent feedback.

The emission frequency of a diode laser submitted to a frequency-dependent optoelectronic feedback is observed to have more than one stable operation point together with a stable power emission. This is, to our knowledge, the first observation of bistability exclusively in the frequency of an optical system. The experiment was carried out with a semiconductor laser coupled to the cesium D2 line by an orthogonally polarized frequency-sensitive optical feedback.

Spatiotemporal patterns of external noise-induced transitions in a bistable reaction-diffusion system: photoelectron emission microscopy experiments and modeling.

The rate of CO oxidation on Ir(111) surfaces exhibits bistability at T=500 K in a range of the CO fraction Y in the CO+O reactant gas flux. Measured CO2 rates as a function of the noise strength imposed on Y are well reproduced by parameter-free modeling. We present photoelectron emission microscopy measurements and 2D calculations of the spatiotemporal patterns of CO- and O-rich domains. The role of combined multiplicative and additive noise on Y for CO and O domain wall motion and island nucleation-growth-coalescence processes is analyzed.

Magnetic bistability and controllable reversal of asymmetric ferromagnetic nanorings.

Magnetization reversals through the formation of a vortex state and the rotation of an onion state are two processes with comparable probabilities for symmetric magnetic nanorings with a radius of about 50 nanometers. This magnetic bistability is the manifestation of the competition between the exchange energy and the magnetostatic energy in nanomagnets. The relative probability of the two processes in symmetric nanorings is dictated by the ring geometry and cannot be altered after fabrication. In this work, we report a novel type of nanorings--asymmetric nanorings. By tuning the asymmetry, we can control the fraction of the vortex formation process from about 40% to nearly 100% by utilizing the direction of the external magnetic field. The observed results have been accounted for by the dependence of the domain-wall energy on the local cross-section area for which we have provided theoretical calculations.

Observation of bistability and hysteresis in optical binding of two dielectric spheres.

Using a dual-beam fiber optic trap, we have experimentally observed bistability and hysteresis in the equilibrium separations of a pair of optically bound dielectric spheres in one dimension. These observations are in agreement with our coupled system model in which the dielectric spheres modify the field propagation, and the field self-consistently determines the optical forces on the spheres. Our results reveal hitherto unsuspected complexity in the coupled light-sphere system.

Bistability of a compliant cavity induced by acoustic radiation pressure.

We report on the first observation of multiple-order bistability due to acoustic radiation pressure in a compliant acoustic cavity formed between a spherical ultrasonic transducer immersed in water and the free liquid surface located at its focus. The hysteretic behavior of the cavity length, observed both with amplitude ramps and frequency sweeps, is accurately described using a one-dimensional model of a compliant Fabry-Pérot resonator assuming the acoustic radiation pressure to be the only coupling between the cavity and the acoustic field.

Bistable phase locking of a nonlinear optical cavity via rocking: Transmuting vortices into phase patterns.

We report the experimental observation of the conversion of a phase-invariant nonlinear system into a bistable phase-locked one via rocking [G. J. de Valcárcel and K. Staliunas, Phys. Rev. E 67, 026604 (2003)10.1103/PhysRevE.67.026604]. This conversion results in vortices of the phase-invariant system being replaced by phase patterns such as domain walls. A model for the experimental device, a photorefractive oscillator, is given that reproduces the observed behavior.
