In an industrial pig production unit ten sows were selected at random. All the sows had puerperal disease in their anamnesis and all of them revealed at the time of selection--during their late pregnancy--Urinary Tract Infection (UT)I and vaginal-vulvar discharge (VD). Mid-stream early morning urine samples were collected during four days ante partum and during four days post partum. The samples were semiquantitatively examined for E. coli and gram positive cocci. Three sows showed ante partum non significant bacteriuria which turned into significant bacteriuria post partum. The majority of the reminding sows revealed a significant bacteriuria during the whole period of examination.
Since muscle relaxants have been implicated in triggering malignant hyperthermia (MH) in MH-susceptible humans and animals, the potential of new muscle relaxants for triggering MH needs to be assessed in vivo in MH-susceptible pigs. The triggering potential of atracurium was evaluated in six MH-susceptible pigs during one hour infusion of a 90% blocking dose (0.4 mg/kg/h) of atracurium. The mean recovery time (25% to 75%) was 10.2 min and a slight increase in heart rate (142 to 170 beats per minute) was observed. Rectal temperature decreased slightly (36.4 to 35.6 degrees C) and end tidal CO2 was stable at 5.46 kpa. In this study atracurium did not trigger MH in susceptible pigs.
In a large pig production unit 60 postparturient sows were divided at random into 3 groups, each with 20 sows. Group 1 (20 sows) received 30 g Farmavet Trisulfa per os daily from the beginning of the postfarrowing period for 1 week. Group 2 (20 sows) received 30 g Farmavet Trisulfa per os daily from the beginning of the postfarrowing period for 1 week, and in addition were given 3 mg Gabbrostim 24-48 hours after farrowing in a single i.m. application. Group 3 (20 sows) untreated control. The following parameters were evaluated: A: number of weaned piglets per sow, B: weaning to service interval in days, C: return to oestrus in percent. Both groups 1 and 2 showed better results when compared to the control group. Group 2 was superior to group 1.

The development of the shape of teats in 30 female piglets, of which at least one of the parents showed inverted teats, was systematically observed during three to four months. Similar investigations could be carried out in sows with inverted teats from day 60 of pregnancy until the end of lactation. There is no evidence that inflammations or traumatas are causes for teat hypoplasias, and there is no correlation between "teat necroses" of piglets and the incomplete teat development. The wide distribution of teat abnormities is shown by investigations of slaughter pigs: 20% of fattening pigs, 17% of boars and 6% of sows were affected by inverted teats. 75% of the inverted teats were seen periumbilical. The morphology of hypo- and aplastic teats in boars is described. With regard to the selection of affected pigs, a first investigation is recommended in the 12th week of life and a second one at the age of five month is recommended. Particular attention has to be paid to boars for mating and artifical insemination in order to exclude affected boars as early as possible from breeding.
In a field study the hygiene level of trucks for the transport of pigs was measured. In total, on 56 times the hygiene level of a truck has been measured with two different methods, one microbiological method and one bioluminescence technique. During the field study 1.913 hygiene samples were taken. The average hygiene-level after cleaning and disinfection improved. The improvement was based on education and advisory about hygiene which immediately could be used by the truck-drivers. The fact that the results of hygiene measuring was shown directly was also a stimulation to the drivers; they improved their cleaning and disinfection job. The use of detergents by cleaning trucks is not required, although it contributes to a better hygiene-level. The introduction of plastic materials in stead of wood also improved the overall-hygiene in the transportation of animals.
The activities of proteinases active at neutral pH and of acid phosphatase increases after freezing and defrosting and hypotonic shock in porcine leukocytes in vitro infected with the classical hog cholera virus in comparison with intact cells. The enzymes in the cells from animals both immune and nonimmune to hog cholera were activated upon infection with both virulent and vaccine strains of the virus. No proteinase activity was detected in the culture medium in which infected porcine leukocytes were cultured. Possible pathological reactions of a cell to viral infection are discussed.
Glucose can be extracted from the carbohydrates of pig liver by water, but glycogen only by boiling alkalies. The last one can be precipitated with ethanol. The boiling of an aqueous liver suspension causes a decrease in glucose quantity as expected. Thereby the influence of the liver proteins on carbohydrate concentration becomes apparent as well as the interaction between both substances within the reaction of non-enzymatic browning. A series of storing experiments confirmed that neither freezing nor boiling temperatures can completely stop this reaction.

Groups of each 10 boars, weight range 20-60 kg, were fed ad libitum the following 4 rations of similar protein: energy ratio: Ration I (control), Ration II (+ 2% soyaoil ), Ration III (+ 2% soyaoil + 5% lard), Ration IV (+ 7% lard). When the animals reached 60 kg body weight each group was halved. One half had free access to the above rations, while the other half were fed ad libitum on the control ration. At body weights of 50 and 100 kg the concentrations of urea, insulin, glucose and cholesterol were measured, in addition the fatty acid composition of the backfat. At the end of the experiment (100 kg) the content of fat in the carcass was calculated by determining the specific gravidity of the carcass. There was little difference in the intake of metabolizable energy (ME) of the different groups of animals at both body weight ranges as a result of the reduction in feed intake of the fat supplemented diets on account of the higher ME-content. There were little differences in the glucose and urea concentrations in the blood of the animals fed the different rations. The highest cholesterol and the lowest insulin levels were measured in groups III and IV, when 5 and 7% lard was added, respectively. The animals, continuously fed Rations III and IV over the whole period of experiment, had a significantly higher fat content (p less than 0,05) than the control animals. There was a very marked influence of the fatty acid intake on the fatty acid pattern of the backfat. Following the change of feed to the control ration at 60 kg body weight, the linoleic acid content of the animals in Groups III and IV was significantly reduced (p less than 0,001) from 15.7 to 11.2%. However this was higher than the 7.3% linoleic acid measured on the animals continuously fed the control ration.
For the purpose of ascertaining the vitamin A requirement seven experiments with 303 pigs in the live weight range between 6.5 and 114 kg were made. In three experiments under in practice conditions we checked the standard vitamin A supplement to the mixed feed with 1,732 pigs (live weight range between 8.5 and 110 kg). The supplement to vitamin-A-free rations and to those poor in or free of carotene amounted to between 0 and 8,000 IU/kg feed. Above that, between 0 and 16 mg beta-carotene and 1,000 mg nitrite/kg feed were supplemented. As long as the vitamin A store in the liver during weaning amounted to greater than 50 IU and greater than 100 IU/g at the beginning of fattening, feed intake, live weight growth and feed expenditure were not influenced by the supplement of vitamin and provitamin resp. The supplement of 250 IU resulted in the same weight growth from weaning to the end of fattening as that of 4,000 IU. Nitrite supplement had a negative effect at 250 IU, at 500 IU vitamin A consumption and weight growth tended to be only insignificantly lower. The methaemoglobin content decreasing in the course of the experiment reflects the adaptation of the pigs to the nitrite load. The consumption and growth depression caused by vitamin A deficiency could be observed from the 7th week of the experiment when casein-swelling starch rations were fed, but from the 13th week of the experiment only when cereal-soybean oilmeal rations were fed. The weight of liver, spleen, kidneys, heart and brain was not influenced by vitamin A supply. The same applies to the body composition and retention with the exception of two deficiency piglets, which contained less fat in the empty body than the control animals.
