Epidemiologic and serodiagnostic aspects of chlamydial salpingitis.

Cultural, serologic, and epidemiologic aspects of Chlamydia trachomatis in acute salpingitis were assessed. Of 111 patients, 52 (47%) harbored C trachomatis in the cervix urethra, or both. Neisseria gonorrhoeae was isolated in 41 patients of 209 (20%). A majority (79%) of women with gonorrhea were also infected with C trachomatis. A fourfold titer rise of chlamydial IgG antibodies or significant IgM titer, or both, was demonstrated in 37 patients of 72 (51%) from whom paired sera were obtained. The serologic response distinguished 3 different phases of chlamydial infection: acute, subacute, and chronic or reinfection. The patients' male sex partners were examined on a voluntary basis, and C trachomatis was detected in 68%, indicating a need for effective partner examination and treatment.

[Effects of Ilexonin A on chemical salpingitis induced tubal obstruction in rats].

Ilexonin A, a new drug in improving the blood circulation and microcirculation, is extracted from Ilicis pubescentis. The preventive and therapeutic effects of Ilexonin A on chemical salpingitis induced tubal obstruction (CSTO) with morphological and hemorheological change in rats was studied. Results showed that Ilexonin A was effective in treating (CSTO by oppositing the degeneration and necrosis of epithelium, inhibiting the hyperplasia of connective tissue, and reducing the infiltration of inflammatory cells. The improvement of morphology was more significant in treated groups than that in controls (P < 0.05-0.01). The indices concerning model rat's hemorheology were also analysed between treated groups and controls. It indicated that Ilexonin A could improve the viscosity of blood and aggregation of red blood cells. It is suggested Ilexonin A could promote the absorption of inflammatory substances as a result of improving hemorheology.

[Acute salpingitis: current antibiotic protocols].

Nowadays, most patients with uncomplicated acute salpingitis undergo ambulatory treatment. The choice of medications must take features of PID into account: they are mult-microbial infections and a prolonged follow-up is necessary in order to decrease the risk of sequellae. To fulfil these goals, combination of antibiotics are prescribed that are active against C. trachomatis, enterobacteria and anaerobes.

Penetration of ceftazidime into serum, myometrium, endometrium, salpinges and subcutaneous tissue.

Thirty-one patients received an intravenous bolus injection of 2 g ceftazidime over 5 min at various times before abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy. Ceftazidime concentrations in myometrium, endometrium and salpinges reached 34% to 43% of the corresponding serum levels. Subcutaneous tissue concentrations were significantly lower. Tissue concentrations of 8 mg/l were maintained for at least 5 h.

Penetration of cefotetan into serum, myometrium, endometrium and salpinges.

24 patients received an intravenous 5-min bolus injection of 2 g cefotetan at various times prior to abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy. Cefotetan concentrations in salpinges were significantly higher than in myometrium and endometrium. Tissue concentrations of 16 micrograms/g could be attained for at least 5 h. At this concentration, 90% of most aerobic and anaerobic bacteria causing genital tract infections are inhibited.

Primary fallopian tube carcinoma with coexistent tuberculous salpingitis: a case report.

A case of primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube with coexistent tuberculosis has been presented, and previously reported cases in the literature reviewed. These cases represent a rare occurrence where the diagnosis might be missed without a thorough pathologic evaluation. Clinicians should maintain an index of suspicion for fallopian tube carcinoma in perimenopausal or postmenopausal women with menometrorrhagia who fail to respond to hormonal therapy and a D and C. The finding of a tuboovarian abscess in a postmenopausal woman should also cause concern for tubal carcinoma, as it is usually a disease of menarcheal women. Similarly, a possibility of granulomatous salpingitis should always be borne in mind in the differential diagnosis of inflammatory diseases of the fallopian tube.
