Scintigraphy in the evaluation of disorders of reproductive and sexual function.

The genital tract is a complex anatomic region with overlapping endocrinologic, anatomic, and functional features. Nuclear medicine has value in examining functional aspects of reproductive and sexual function, ranging from testicular or cavernosal perfusion in the male, to fallopian tube transport in the female. Blood pool imaging has been helpful in detecting subclinical varicoceles. Proper understanding of the role that these tests play is important for their success and credibility.

[Value of molecular-genetic examination of patients with the Shereshevsky-Terner syndrome and married couples with disorders of reproductive function].

The molecular-cytogenetic investigation gives a significant opportunity for diagnosis of gonosome mosaics. Due to the molecular-cytogenetic method additional chromosomes in karyotypes in 4 of 13 patients are determined. A significant spreading of mosaicism type 45, XO/46, X among women with early spontaneous abortions is revealed.

[Cytogenetic investigation of somatic cells and morphofunctional characteristics of oocytes in women with reproductive function disorder].

Results of cytogenetic investigation of the rate and the types of chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes of peripheric blood in 31 infertile women are presented. The high frequency of karyotype abnormalities (16.4%) has been shown in the studied group. Morphofunctional characteristics of the oocytes of the women with normal and abnormal karyotypes have been compared. Oocytes of the patients with chromosome abnormalities were characterized by reduced ability to fertilization and further development.

[Molecular-cytogenetic study of the aborted fetuses in women with reproductive function disorders].

It is known that the frequency of chromosomal abnormalities among spontaneous miscarriages of the first trimester of pregnancy makes 50-60%. Research of karyotypes of chorionic villus cells of miscarriages has been conducted by combining the standard cytogenetic method and the FISH analysis on interphase nuclei of centromeric specific DNA samples by the tests to the chromosomes 13/21, 14/22, 15, 16, 18, X, Y. The described complex approach can be successfully applied for effective identification ofchromosomal abnormalities in the material of spontaneous miscarriages. The results specify the necessity of careful study of genomes of matrimonial pairs with the usual unmaturing in anamnesis and especially before treatment by IVF methods.

Luteal phase deficiency. An underdiagnosed and overtreated reproductive endocrine disorder.

Although luteal phase deficiency is rather time consuming, expensive, and sometimes painful to diagnose and treat, this disease entity is associated with a high degree of treatment success. Physicians are encouraged to become more aware of luteal phase deficiency as a potential diagnosis in the infertile woman. If the recommendations are followed in the diagnosis and treatment of luteal phase deficiency, a high degree of success can be achieved in infertile couples who otherwise would be diagnosed as having idiopathic infertility (and be ineffectively treated).
