[[ARIMA modeling of birth, marriage and population growth rates in Taiwan]].

"In this paper, we will focus on [population growth, birth, and marriage rates in Taiwan] and explore [them] in terms of the time series model. Furthermore, the comparison and analysis will be made utilizing [the] univariate ARIMA model, transfer function model and multivariate ARIMA model accordingly. The seasonal factor will also be considered. Lastly, [projections] will be made on the short term growth rate of these three indexes, and we will also estimate the monthly sum of population of the next two years in Taiwan." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

The population of Yugoslavia, 1948-1991.

"On 31 March, 1991, the sixth population census after World War Two was taken in Yugoslavia. The census of households, apartments and farms took place simultaneously to the population census. The census was taken in extremely difficult political, economic and other conditions, which greatly hindered its organization, and the work of the census takers and census commissions. The census was not taken in the province of Kosovo, nor partially in some other communes, thus the total population in these regions was estimated, which is explicitly stated in the tables. Furthermore, the method used to make this estimation is also cited. A comparison of the first results of the 1991 population census with data from previous censuses, and with available estimates, indicates the reliability of the results obtained in the territory in which the 1991 population census was taken."

[Population forecasts 1996: less population growth, increased aging].

"According to the new national population forecasts for the Netherlands for the period 1996-2050, the population size will continue to grow for another three decades. It will reach a maximum of 17.2 million, lower than the maximum according to the previous population forecasts.... The reason for this lower growth is that the assumption with respect to the future level of fertility is revised downwards.... Another adjustment of the forecasts is the assumption that life expectancy at birth will continue to increase until 2050, whereas in the previous forecasts life expectancy was held constant after 2010.... As a consequence of these revised assumptions the percentage of elderly people will increase more strongly." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

The real problem.

I really was dismayed to see the basic cause of all our planet's problems buried in the September/October 96 issue: "...religious zealots might wreck the family planning needs of a billion people...." Let's face hard facts: all these problems would go away if the planet's population were small enough. What we really need to establish is what the population of the earth should be, and then set out to achieve that population as soon as possible. All of our efforts to reduce automobile pollution, the amount of reactor waste, the number of species being obliterated, etc., are just postponing the inevitable. What we need to look at, and keep track of, are those factors that encourage expanding population and discourage population control. For example, most businesses like to see the population expand so they can have a growing customer base. I truly appreciate your efforts. But if we are going to get anywhere we have to clearly identify the real problem. And then we have to break it down into manageable pieces and go to work on them. Otherwise we are going to keep looking at the graphs and wringing our hands as this accumulation of problems builds until it sweeps over us like a giant tsunami.

The urban density function and its application: cross-sectional approach.

Using population census data for the years 1947-1971, the author analyzes the relationship between changes in urban density and population growth in three major coastal urban centers in Queensland, Australia. "Changes in density patterns over time are examined in terms of the empirical exponential density gradient models which emphasise the significance of the distance from the CBD (Central Business District), and a projection of residential population in the centres is made for the year 1990."

China's population figures: can the contradictions be resolved?

In recent years, the government of the People's Republic of China has been reporting the country's population as "nearly 800 million." A variety of evidence suggests that this approximation is the best currently available in China, and that it may be some time before further, more accurate, demographic data are produced. The paper presents and discusses alternate population estimates and projections by UN, US, and USSR specialists.
