AIM: To describe the gross and histological lesions of a neurological disease in Borderdale sheep characterised clinically by blindness and circling, as a basis to its classification. METHODS: Formalin-fixed tissues were processed into paraffin wax and epoxy resin for light and electron microscopy of variously stained sections. RESULTS: Lesions were those of a lysosomal storage disease with severe neurodegeneration of the cerebral cortex. The staining reactions, autofluorescence and ultrastructure of storage material allowed the diagnosis of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis associated with the accumulation of subunit-c of mitochondrial ATP synthase. CONCLUSIONS: The severity of neurodegeneration and minor differences in the ultrastructure of storage material implied that this was a different disease from other forms of ovine ceroid-lipofuscinosis that accumulate subunit-c of mitochondrial ATP synthase. An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance is considered probable. Although of only minor economic importance, this disease may be important to research into the group of ceroid-lipofuscinoses as a whole.
STUDY OBJECTIVE: Knowledge about changes in wellbeing during the passage from professional studies to working life is scarce and controversial. This study examined these changes among university graduates with good and poor employment prospects. DESIGN: A longitudinal study with four postal questionnaire surveys of a closed cohort. SETTING: Cohorts of graduating Finnish physicians and architects were followed up from 1994 to 1998. In 1994 Finland's national economy was still struggling to break loose from a period of severe recession, and unemployment rates were high even among educated professionals. As economic growth eventually got under way the unemployment situation began to ease for physicians but not for architects. PARTICIPANTS: Architecture students (n = 189) from Finland's three technical universities and medical students (n = 638) from Finland's five medical faculties. Both had started their studies in 1989. RESULTS: In the first questionnaire survey there were no differences between the professions in strain resistance resources, as indicated by Sense of Coherence (SOC), or in psychological distress, as indicated by General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Profession emerged as a significant between subject factor in analysis of variance for repeated measures of both SOC and GHQ. Physicians' scores on the 13 item SOC questionnaire improved during the follow up from 62.6 to 67.5 and on the 12 item GHQ questionnaire from 24.2 to 22.2. Among architects the corresponding scores remained unchanged (62.5-62.2 and 23.1-22.6). The significance of profession remained unchanged when gender and individuals' graduation and total work experience were introduced to the statistical models as between subject factors. CONCLUSIONS: Improved SOC in physicians but not in architects supports the hypothesis that good employment prospects are important to employee wellbeing. Although less consistent, indicating fluctuations in day to day psychological distress, GHQ findings are also in line with the hypothesis. In both professions the indicators studied were independent of individuals' graduation and career. It is concluded that rather than individually, the mechanisms that connect employment prospects with wellbeing operate collectively within the whole profession. Highly educated professionals do not complete their studies until almost 30, and if for reasons of insecure employment they are unable to develop their SOC to the optimum level at that age, their resources for resisting health endangering strain may remain permanently poor.
A previously published report by these authors on the impact in the United States of recession on children's health emphasized four points: available monitoring systems are not adequate for reporting on the health of children in a timely fashion; the monitoring of maternal and child health must emphasize data on population subgroups, i.e., minorities, the poor and those hardest hit by recession; the health of poor children is adversely affected and their numbers dramatically increased during the recession of 1981-82; and comparisons between the recession of 1974-75 and that of 1981-82 suggest that expansion of health services and social support systems during the recession of 1974-75 had a cushioning effect that protected the health of children, while the curtailment of many of these programs during the 1981-82 recession is associated with adverse health trends, especially among the most vulnerable population subgroups. Data on these issues are appreciably better now than they were nine months ago, thus further validating the points made above. As with the previous report, officially released current data are abundant for economic indicators (even for early 1984), but are sparse for health status indicators. The previous report also observed that the health status of children is influenced by interdependent and interlocking factors that include economic well-being and access to health services and social supports. A new analysis attempts to unlock those relationships and measure the impact of lost welfare benefits, implemented as a result of the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1981 (OBRA), and the separate impact of the serious recession of 1981-82. That analysis shows the poverty rate for children increased by 7.6 percentage points between 1981 and 1982. Approximately 60 percent of the increase is attributable to the recession and 40 percent to social policy changes effected after 1981.
It has been suggested that the Minute loci of Drosophila melanogaster are the redundant structural loci for the transfer RNA's [31]. To inquire whether the Minute loci differed from other loci in their genetic organization we have determined the dose response curves for the induction of Minutes and sex-linked recessive lethals with ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS). There are approx. 67.75 +/- 9.35 Minute mutants induced for every 5000 recessive lethals induced in the genome and this relationship is independent of EMS dosage. This is in good agreement with the relative numbers of Minute and lethal loci in the genome. Because the target size of the average Minute locus is the same as that of the average locus capable of mutating to a lethal, these data do not support the view that the Minute loci are special in their genetic organization. Since Minute mutants can be scored in the F1 of mutagenized flies it is suggested that the induction of Minute mutants may provide a more rapid and economical means of assessing mutagenicity than do traditional screens for the induction of recessive lethals.

In these days of budget constraints and recession, PACU nurses will have to demonstrate that their nursing interventions are economical and effective. Their nursing practice needs to be shaped by scientific knowledge. The purpose of this article is to present an overview of qualitative research methods that can be used by PACU nurses. The methods described and discussed in this article include phenomenology, ethnography, grounded theory, and case studies. Part II of this article, which will be published in a subsequent issue of this journal, will present research problems that are of interest and the ways in which PACU nurses can use the qualitative research designs discussed in part I of the article.
The authors investigated the morphological changes in the transverse apophysis of C VII by Rx study on an isolated population. Two variations were mainly observed: the transverse mega-apophysis and the cervical rib. The authors found a remarkable incidence of variations, more than the average of the literature. Authors suppose that this results can be attributed at the geographical and economical isolation of the population and they hypothesize a genetic transmission of recessive autosomal type.

Census data on poverty and income show short-term improvements in 1995, but the trends were not as positive over the longer term. Poverty rates remained higher than they were at comparable points in previous economic cycles. The incomes of lower- and middle-income households grew in 1995, but only the wealthiest fifth of the population completely recovered from the recession of the early 1990s. Although poverty rates fell and incomes rose for most groups in 1995, Hispanic households did not share in the overall economic gains. In addition, economic improvements were not shared by all geographic areas--the reduction in poverty was concentrated in suburban areas. The current poverty measure does not show the full impact of government benefit programs on poverty, as it does not take into account the effect of non-cash benefits or taxes. An alternative poverty measure gives a much better picture of the effectiveness of government benefit programs in reducing poverty.
