LabVelocity: online tools for life science products, protocols, technical information, MEDLINE searches, and laboratory calculations.

As the pace of life science discovery increases, so do the demands on researchers. To remain competitive in the life science industry, researchers must use every tool at their disposal to keep up with new products, protocols, news, and literature in their field. While there are now myriad Web sites that assist researchers with this problem, many suffer from confusing user interfaces, poorly designed search engines, and a narrow information focus. Here, we present LabVelocity, a user-friendly Web site that provides a free multidisciplinary information-gathering service for the life science research community. Using LabVelocity, a researcher can quickly find the products, protocols, technical references, news, MEDLINE abstracts, and interactive software tools necessary for an experiment. This aggregation of information can streamline experimental planning and is especially useful when researchers want to set up a new laboratory or to venture outside their field of expertise.

The Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties: a critical analysis.

The Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties (CPS) is the most widely used source of drug information in Canada, and is heavily financed by the pharmaceutical industry. A close examination of its contents comparing a computer-drawn, randomized sample of monographs from its "White Pages" to standard pharmacological reference works demonstrates certain of its characteristics: it uncritically includes many inadequate preparations; it overstates the benefits and understates the adverse qualities of many preparations; and it contains little or no information on relative indications, efficacy, or price. These characteristics serve to promote the marketing goals of the drug manufacturers and severely limit the volume's usefulness as an objective source of drug information. The role of the CPS and similar publications in the overall context of current drug company marketing strategies is discussed. Finally, suggestions for improvements are made involving the elimination of direct manufacturer financing, and the creation of an objective, independent, nonprofit publishing agency supported by professional and governmental organizations.

Advances in materiel management systems technology.

When evaluating materiel management systems for your needs into the 1990s, be aware that the hardware you choose could be just as important as the software. It should 1) provide flexibility for growth, 2) provide access to a unified database for departments on-site as well as in remote locations, and 3) be easily managed and maintained by those that need it for critical day-to-day information. Software developers are already incorporating the new technologies in their programs and systems designs for the 1990s. Being up-to-date on the new hardware and new software will help you evaluate the right materiel management information system.
