Effect of steric encumbrance of tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)borate on the structure and properties of ternary copper(II) complexes having N,N-donor heterocyclic bases.

Complexes of formulation [Cu(Tp(Ph))(L)](ClO(4)) (1-4), where Tp(Ph) is anionic tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)borate and L is N,N-donor heterocyclic base, viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 2), dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq, 3), and dipyridophenazine (dppz, 4), are prepared from a reaction of copper(II) acetate.hydrate with KTp(Ph) and L in CH(2)Cl(2) and isolated as perchlorate salts. The complexes are characterized by analytical, structural, and spectral methods. The crystal structures of complexes 1-4 show the presence of discrete cationic complexes having the metal, Tp(Ph), and L in a 1:1:1 ratio and a noncoordinating perchlorate anion. The complexes have a square-pyramidal 4 + 1 coordination geometry in which two nitrogens of L and two nitrogens of the Tp(Ph) ligand occupy the basal plane and one nitrogen of Tp(Ph) binds at the axial site. Complexes 3 and 4 display distortion from the square-pyramidal geometry. The Cu-N distances for the equatorial and axial positions are approximately 2.0 and 2.2 A, respectively. The phenyl groups of Tp(Ph) form a bowl-shaped structure that encloses the [CuL] moiety. The steric encumbrance is greater for the bpy and phen ligands compared to that for dpq and dppz. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes (mu approximately equal to 1.8 mu(B)) exhibit axial EPR spectra in CH(2)Cl(2) glass at 77 K giving g(parallel) and g(perpendicular) values of approximately 2.18 (A(parallel) = 128 G) and approximately 2.07. The data suggest a [d(x(2)-y(2))](1) ground state. The complexes are redox-active and display a quasireversible cyclic voltammetric response for the Cu(II)/Cu(I) couple near 0.0 V versus SCE with an i(pc)/i(pa) ratio of unity in CH(2)Cl(2) or DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The E(1/2) values of the couple vary in the order 4 > 3 > 2 > 1. A profound effect of steric encumbrance caused by the Tp(Ph) ligand is observed in the reactivity of 1-4 with the calf thymus (CT) and supercoiled (SC) DNA. Complexes 2-4 show similar binding to CT DNA. The propensity for the SC DNA cleavage varies as 4 > 3 > 2. The bpy complex does not show any significant binding or cleavage of DNA. Mechanistic investigations using distamycin reveal minor groove binding for 2 and 3 and a major groove binding for 4. The scission reactions that are found to be inhibited by hydroxyl radical scavenger DMSO are likely to proceed through sugar hydrogen abstraction pathways.

Ferromagnetic coupling between low- and high-spin iron(III) ions in the tetranuclear complex fac-[[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)2(mu-CN)]3FeIII(H2O)3]* 6H2O ([HB(pz)3]- = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate).

The novel mononuclear PPh4-fac-[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)3]*H2O (1) [PPh4+= tetraphenylphosphonium cation; (HB(pz)3)- = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate] and tetranuclear fac-[[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)2(mu-CN)]3FeIII(H2O)3]*6H2O (2) have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal data for compound 1: monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 9.575(3) A, b = 21.984(4) A, c = 16.863(3) A, beta = 100.34(2) degrees, U = 3486(1) A3, Z = 4. Crystal data for compound 2: orthorhombic, space group Pnam, a = 14.084(3) A, b = 14.799(4) A, c = 25.725(5) A, U = 5362(2) A3, Z = 4. Compound 1 is a low-spin iron(III) compound with three cyanide ligands in fac arrangement and a tridentate pyrazolylborate ligand building a distorted octahedral environment around the iron atom. Compound 2 is the first example of a molecular species containing three peripheral low-spin iron(III) ions linked to a central high-spin iron(III) cation by single cyanide bridges, the anion of 1 acting as a monodentate ligand in 2. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 2 reveal the occurrence of a significant ferromagnetic coupling between the three peripheral low-spin iron(III) centers and the central high-spin iron(III) ion cations leading to a low-lying nonet spin state.

Elucidating drug-metalloprotein interactions with tris(pyrazolyl)borate model complexes.

The tetrahedral zinc complex [(Tp(Me,Ph))ZnOH] (Tp(Me,Ph) = hydrotris(5,3-methylphenylpyrazolyl)borate) was combined with acetohydroxamic acid, 3-mercapto-2-butanone, N-(methyl)mercaptoacetamide, beta-mercaptoethanol, 3-mercapto-2-propanol, and 3-mercapto-2-butanol to generate the complexes [(Tp(Me,Ph))Zn(ZBG)] (ZBG = zinc-binding group). These complexes were prepared to determine the mode of binding for three different types of thiol-derived matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors. The solid-state structures of all six metal complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography. The structures reveal that while beta-mercaptoketones and beta-mercaptoamides bind the zinc ion in a bidentate fashion, the three beta-mercaptoalcohol compounds only demonstrate monodentate coordination via the sulfur atom. Prior to this work, no experimental data were available for the binding conformation of these types of inhibitors to the zinc active site of MMPs. The results of these model studies reveal different binding modes for these ZBGs and are useful for explaining the results of inhibition assays and in second-generation drug design. This work demonstrates the utility of model complexes as a tool for revealing drug-metalloprotein interactions.

Construction of a functional layered solid using the tetrakis(imidazolyl)borate coordinating anion.

The coordination polymer Pb[B(Im)(4)](NO(3)), constructed by using tetrakis(imidazolyl)borate and lead(II) nitrate solutions, is a layered material with the metal centers facing the interlayer spacing. As in naturally occurring layered minerals, this compound can readily undergo anion exchange in the solid state with retention of crystallinity. We examined stoichiometric exchange of (15)N-nitrate for nitrate and iodide for nitrate by (15)N and (207)Pb SSNMR and confirmed retention of crystallinity by IR and powder XRD diffraction.

Versatile ligand behavior of hydrotris(4-ethyl-3-methyl-5-thioxo-1,2,4-triazolyl)borate. Syntheses and crystal structures of Cu(I) and Bi(III) complexes.

Preparations of copper(I) and bismuth(III) complexes of hydrotris(4-ethyl-3-methyl-5-thioxo-1,2,4-triazolyl)borate (Tr(Et,Me)) are described. These complexes have been characterized by means of spectroscopy and microanalysis. Molecular structures of [Cu(Tr(Et,Me))](2) x 2.5CH(3)CN x 0.5H(2)O (3a) and [Bi(Tr(Et,Me))(2)]NO(3) x 2CHCl(3) (4a) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the centrosymmetric dimeric copper(I) complex, Tr(Et,Me) acts in the k(3)S,S',H:kS' ' coordination mode. The metal is found in a distorted trigonal geometry as the ligand exhibits an "S(3)-inverted" conformation at the boron center so that a weak [B-H.Cu] agostic interaction renders the overall coordination of the (3 + 1) type. On the other hand, in the bismuth complex, Tr(Et,Me) presents the k(3)S,S',S' ' coordination mode and the "S(3)-normal" conformation. The metal is found in a regular octahedral geometry bound by six thioxo groups of two ligands. Species distributions in solution have been studied using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry upon dissolution of 3a and 4a crystals in acetonitrile. Monomeric and polynuclear copper(I) complexes with different M:L ratios are present in solution, while for 4a only the monomeric species is present.

Electronic structures of mixed-sandwich complexes of cyclopentadienyl and Hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate ligands with 3d transition metals.

The electronic and magnetic properties of a series of mixed-sandwich complexes MCp(R)Tp (Cp(R) = Cp or Cp; Tp = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate; M = V, Cr, Fe, Co or Ni) have been studied and compared to their homoleptic analogues, MCp(R)(2) and MTp(2). Solid-state magnetic susceptibility measurements and EPR spectroscopic data indicate that complexes with d(3), d(6), and d(8) configurations are similar electronically to their metallocene analogues, except for FeCpTp, which displays a spin equilibrium (S = 0 if S = 2) in solution which was investigated by variable- temperature NMR spectroscopy. The d(2) complex [VCpTp](+) displays magnetic behavior consistent with an orbitally nondegenerate ground state. The d(4) species CrCpTp has a high-spin (S = 2) ground state. The d(7) species CoCpTp is high spin (S = 3/2) whereas its Cp analogue and [NiCpTp](+) are both low-spin (S = 1/2) species. The optical spectra of the d(3), d(6), and d(8) complexes were assigned in a fashion similar to the analogous metallocenes and ligand-field parameters (delta(1) = delta-sigma gap, delta(2) = sigma-pi gap for d-orbitals in axial symmetry) calculated. The analysis shows that for 15-electron species the total ligand-field splitting, delta(TOT), is larger than for their metallocene analogues, whereas for the 18-electron case Delta(TOT) is smaller and for 20-electron systems delta(TOT) is approximately the same. In all cases delta(2) is substantially reduced compared to the metallocenes, and in the majority of cases delta(1) is markedly larger. DFT calculations were performed to investigate further the nature of the ligand environment on the frontier orbitals in these complexes. Orbital energies and compositions were calculated and compared for a series of homoleptic and mixed-sandwich complexes of Ni(II) and across the 1st transition series for MCp(R)Tp species. The ability of Tp (vs Cp) to act as a delta-donor (with respect to the principal molecular axis) imparts significant ligand antibonding character to the delta-orbitals and results in decreased epsilon(pi)-epsilon(delta) values compared to the metallocenes and an increased tendency toward high-spin complexes in the mixed-sandwich complexes. Structure calculations were performed for CrCpTp, [VCpTp](+), and CoCpTp which show substantial distortions from ideal axial symmetry in their crystal structures. The origins of these distortions were confirmed to arise from unequal occupancy of near-degenerate delta- and pi-levels.

A series of dinuclear homo- and heterometallic complexes with two or three bridging sulfido ligands derived from the tungsten tris(sulfido) complex [Et(4)N][(Me(2)Tp)WS(3)] (Me(2)Tp = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate).

The generation of heterobimetallic complexes with two or three bridging sulfido ligands from mononuclear tris(sulfido) complex of tungsten [Et(4)N][(Me(2)Tp)WS(3)] (1; Me(2)Tp = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate) and organometallic precursors is reported. The X-ray analyses have been undertaken to clarify the detailed structures of 3-5, 7, and 9-12.

A chiral alkyltris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand: synthesis of [(Ipc)B(pz)3Mn(CO)3] and [(Ipc)B(pz)3Ru(p-cymene)]PF6 (Ipc = Isopinocampheyl).

The application of the reagent (Ipc)BCl(2) (Ipc = isopinocampheyl) in the synthesis of a new tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand having an Ipc substituent on boron is described. The sodium salt is a convenient precursor for the preparation of the complexes [(Ipc)tris(pyrazolyl)borato]tricarbonylmanganese and [[(Ipc)tris(pyrazolyl)borato](p-cymene)ruthenium](+), whose X-ray crystal structures are reported. While little distortion of the B(pz)(3)M unit is observed in these complexes, steric interaction between the Ipc group and the 3-positions of the pyrazolyl rings is noted to lead to distortion of the angles around the B-C bond.

Lead tetrakis(imidazolyl)borate solids: anion exchange, solvent intercalation, and self assembly of an organic anion.

The coordination polymer Pb[B(Im)(4)](NO(3))(xH(2)O), constructed by using sodium tetrakis(imidazolyl)borate and lead(II) nitrate solutions, is a layered material with the metal centers facing the interlayer spacing. As in naturally occurring layered minerals, this compound can readily undergo anion exchange and reversible intercalation of solvent water in the solid state with retention of crystallinity. We observed changes in solvent intercalation by (207)Pb solid state NMR (SSNMR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Stoichiometric exchange of (15)N nitrate for nitrate and iodide for nitrate is monitored by (15)N and (207)Pb SSNMR, and single crystals of the iodide-exchanged material Pb[B(Im)(4)]I were isolated. While the iodide compound can be obtained through facile exchange from the nitrate parent compound, the organic anion benzoate is placed in the interlayer spacing for nitrate under self-assembly conditions and forms an alternating monolayer in Pb[B(Im)(4)](C(6)H(5)COO)(0.5H(2)O). The ion exchange versus self-assembly behavior correlates with the structural differences in the three compounds. In both Pb[B(Im)(4)]I and Pb[B(Im)(4)](C(6)H(5)COO)(0.5H(2)O), the lead sites act as Lewis acids for the iodide and benzoate, respectively.

Oxygen-bridged borate anions from tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane: synthesis, NMR characterization, and reactivity.

The previously known anion [(C6F5)3B(mu-OH)B(C6F5)3]- (2) has been prepared by a two-step procedure, involving deprotonation of (C6F5)3BOH2 to give [B(C6F5)3OH]- (1), followed by addition of B(C6F5)3. The solution structure and the dynamics of 2 have been investigated by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy. The reaction of [NHEt3]2 with NEt3 resulted in the formation of [NHEt3]+ [(C6F5)3BOH]-, [NHEt3]+ [(C6F5)3BH]-, and (C6F5)3B- (CH2CH=N+ Et2). This indicates that in the presence of a nucleophile anion 2 can dissociate to B(C6F5)3 and 1. The reaction of [HDMAN]2 with 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMAN) confirmed this trend. In the presence of water, 2 transformed into the adduct [(C6F5)3BO(H)H...O(H)B(C6F5)3]- (3), containing the borate 1 hydrogen-bonded to a water molecule coordinated to B(C6F5)3. The same compound is formed by treating (C6F5)3BOH2 with 0.5 equiv of a base. A competition study established that for 1 the Lewis acid-base interaction with B(C6F5)3 is about 5 times preferred over H-bonding to (C6F5)3BOH2. The X-ray single-crystal analysis of [2-methyl-3H-indolium]3 provided the first experimental observation of an asymmetric H-bond in the [H3O2]- moiety, the measured O-H and H...O bond distances being significantly different [1.14(2) vs 1.26(2) A]. The reaction of NEt3 with an equimolar mixture of B(C6F5)3 and bis(pentafluorophenyl)borinic acid, (C6F5)2BOH, afforded the novel borinatoborate salt [NHEt3]+ [(C6F5)3BOB(C6F5)2]- ([NHEt3]4). X-ray diffraction showed that the B-O bond distances are significantly shorter than in [(C6F5)3B(mu-OH)B(C6F5)3]-. Variable-temperature 19F NMR revealed high mobility of the five aryl rings, at variance with the more crowded anion 2. 2D NMR correlation experiments showed that in CD2Cl2 the two anions [(C6F5)3BOH]- and [(C6F5)3BH]- form tight ion pairs with [NHEt3]+, in which the NH proton establishes a conventional (BO...HN) or an unconventional (BH...HN), respectively, hydrogen bond with the anion. The diborate anions 2-4, on the contrary, gave loose ion pairs with the ammonium cation, due both to the delocalized anionic charge and to the more sterically encumbered position of the oxygen atoms that should act as H-bond acceptors.

Structure determination and relative properties of novel cubic borates MM'4(BO3)3 (M = Li, M' = Sr; M = Na, M' = Sr, Ba).

A series of novel borates, MM'4(BO3)3 (M = Li, M' = Sr; M = Na, M' = Sr, Ba), have been successfully synthesized by standard solid-state reaction. The crystal structures have been determined from powder X-ray diffraction data. They crystallize in the cubic space group Iad with large lattice parameters: a = 14.95066(5) A for LiSr4(BO3)3, a = 15.14629(6) A for NaSr4(BO3)3, and a = 15.80719(8) A for NaBa4(BO3)3. The structure was built up from 64 small cubic grids, in which the M' atoms took up the corner angle and the BO3 triangles or MO6 cubic octahedra filled in the interspaces. The isolated [BO3]3- anionic groups are perpendicular to each other, distributed along three 100 directions. The anisotropic polarizations were counteracting, forming an isotropic crystal. Sr and Ba atoms were found to be completely soluble in the solid solution NaSr(4-)xBax(BO3)3 (0 < or = x < or = 4). The photoluminescence of samples doped with the ions Eu2+ and Eu3+ was studied, and effective yellow and red emission was detected, respectively. The results are consistent with the crystallographic study. The DTA and TGA curves of them show that they are chemically stable and congruent melting compounds.

Synthesis and spectroscopic and magnetic characterization of tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate iron tricyanide building blocks, a cluster, and a one-dimensional chain of squares.

The synthesis and spectroscopic and magnetic characterization of several hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1yl)borate (Tp*) iron(II) and iron(III) tricyanide complexes, a rectangular cluster, and a one-dimensional chain of squares are described. Treatment of [NEt4][(Tp*)Fe(III)(CN)3] (3) with manganese(II) triflate in dimethylformamide (DMF) affords rectangular clusters (6, {[(Tp)Fe(CN)2(mu-CN)Mn(DMF)4]2[OTf]2}.2DMF), while tosylate salts afford one-dimensional networks (5, {Mn(II)(DMF)2(mu-OTs)(mu-NC)2(NC)Fe(III)(Tp*)}n) containing embedded [(Tp*)2Fe(III)2Mn(II)2(CN)6]2+ clusters via in situ trapping; the cluster and network crystallize in the monoclinic (6, P2(1)/n) and triclinic (5, P1) space groups, respectively. The 1-D network (5) appears to be derived from {cis-(mu-O3SC6H4Me)2Mn(II)(DMF)4}n (4, P2(1)/n), which is obtained via crystallization of Mn(OTs)2 from DMF/Et2O mixtures. For 4, magnetic studies indicate that the Mn(II) centers are magnetically isolated, with calculated J, g, and theta constants of 6.7 x 10(-3) cm(-1), 2.03, and -0.52 K. Additional magnetic studies of 5 and 6 indicate that the [(Tp*)Fe(III)(CN)3]- centers are highly anisotropic (g = 2.9) and are antiferromagnetically coupled to adjacent Mn(II) centers. For 5 and 6, fitting of the chiT vs T data via the Curie-Weiss expression affords Curie (6.25 and 10.8 cm(3) K mol(-1)) and Weiss (-14.37 and -8.80 K) constants that are consistent with antiferromagnetically coupled low-spin Fe(III) and high-spin Mn(II) centers; least-squares fitting of the chiT vs T data using molecular field theory affords g(avg.), J1, J2, and J' values of 2.25, -1.72, -0.58, and -0.12 cm(-1) for 5. Overall, bridging tosylates appear to be poor communicators of spin information. For 6, the g, J1, and J2 (2.15, -2.02, and -0.78 cm(-1)) values were obtained via least-squares fitting of the chiT vs T data using an expression derived using the Kambe vector coupling method; simulations of the data via MAGPACK afford g(avg.) and J(iso) values of 2.1 and -2.1 cm(-1).

Structure determination and relative properties of novel noncentrosymmetric borates MM'4(BO3)3 (M = Na, M' = Ca and M = K, M' = Ca, Sr).

A series of novel noncentrosymmetric borates, MM'4(BO3)3 (M = Na, M' = Ca; M = K, M' = Ca, Sr), have been successfully synthesized via a standard solid-state reaction. The crystal structures have been determined by the SDPD (structure determination from powder diffraction) method. They crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Ama2 with the following lattice parameters: a = 10.68004(11) A, b = 11.28574(11) A, c = 6.48521(6) A for NaCa4(BO3)3; a = 10.63455(10) A, b = 11.51705(11) A, c = 6.51942(6) A for KCa4(BO3)3; and a = 11.03843(8) A, b = 11.98974(9) A, c = 6.88446(5) A for KSr4(BO3)3. The fundamental building units are isolated BO3 anionic groups. Their second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients were one-half (NaCa4(BO3)3), one-third (KCa4(BO3)3), and two-thirds (KSr4(BO3)3) as large as that of KH2PO4 (KDP). The infrared and UV-vis spectra of the three compounds are discussed. Moreover, a comparison of the structures of these novel compounds and three other novel cubic compounds with the same formula, MM'4(BO3)3 (M = Li, M' = Sr; M = Na, M' = Sr, Ba), is presented here.

Novel tert-butyl-tris(3-hydrocarbylpyrazol-1-yl)borate ligands: synthesis, spectroscopic studies, and coordination chemistry.

The lithium (1) and thallium (2) salts of five new tert-butyl-tris(3-hydrocarbylpyrazol-1-yl)borate ligands [t-BuTp(R)]- (R = H, a; Me, b; i-Pr, c; t-Bu, d; Ph, e) have been synthesized and characterized. Because of steric congestion at B, the reaction between t-BuBH3Li x 0.5 Et2O and excess 2,5-dimethylpyrazole Hpz(Me2) afforded the bis-pz(Me2) derivative, Tl[t-BuBH(3,5-Me2pz)2] (3) after metathesis with TlNO3. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and NMR spectroscopy. The Li salts 1a and 1c exhibit fluxional behavior on the NMR time scale in solution at room temperature. The solid-state 7Li and 11B NMR spectra of 1c suggest that this salt exists as a mixture of axial and equatorial isomers. The partial hydrolysis of 1d afforded the dimeric Li complex {Li[t-BuB(pz(t-Bu))2(mu-OH)]}2 (4). The crystal structure of 4 shows two Li cations encapsulated by the heteroscorpionate [t-BuB(OH)(3-t-Bupz)2]- ligands. A salt elimination reaction between FeCl2(THF)1.5 and 2 equiv of Li[t-BuTp(R)] (R = H, Me) followed by an in situ one-electron oxidation produced good yields of the homoleptic, paramagnetic low-spin iron(III) complexes [Fe(t-BuTp)2]PF6 (5) and [Fe(t-BuTp(Me))2]PF6 (6) that were characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements in solution and the solid phase, 1H NMR, high-resolution mass spectrometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are composed of discrete molecular units with the central Fe(III) ion in an almost perfectly octahedral coordination to six nitrogen atoms. Compound 5 has the shortest Fe-N bond lengths ever reported for [Fe(RTp(R)')2]+-type compounds.
