Journal searching in non-MEDLINE resources on Internet Web sites.

Internet access to the medical journal literature is absorbing the attention of all relevant parties, i.e., publishers, journal vendors, librarians, commercial providers, government agencies, and end users. Journal content on the Web sites spans the range from advertising and ordering information for the print version, to table of contents and abstracts, to downloadable full text and graphics of articles. The searching parameters for systems other than MEDLINE also differ extensively with a wide variety of features and resulting retrieval. This discussion reviews a selection of providers of medical information (particularly the journal literature) on the Internet, making a comparison of what is available on Web sites and how it can be searched.

The NCBI. Publicly available tools and resources on the Web.

As computing technology advances and new sources of valuable biological information are collected the numbers of database and the tools that are used to analyze the data they contain will change. From the time this article was originally written to the time (about 6 months) this summary was put together another 4 releases of Genbank have been made available, two new BLAST search engines, PHI-BLAST and organism-specific BLAST, a database of Human Genetic Variation (dbSNP), and a new version of Cn-3D. The NCBI will, for the forseeable future, provide the research community with a wealth of information and computing tools. made a number of other tools available for molecular biologists.

Meeting clinician information needs by integrating access to the medical record and knowledge resources via the Web.

MINDscape is a web based integrated interface to diverse sources of clinical information including both patient specific information (electronic medical record) as well as medical knowledge (the "digital library") to provide "just in time" information at the point of care. It was developed at the University of Washington to meet clinical information needs both as identified locally and by a review of the literature. Beta testing by over 600 clinicians is in progress and medical centers wide access scheduled for Fall 1997. We describe the information needs we sought to meet and the ongoing evaluation approach we are taking to ensure the information needs of a diverse group of clinicians are met. The iterative evolution of the interface from prototype, to alpha to large scale beta testing is reported. Integration of information occurs at three levels: integration of information by patient, integration of information by provider, and integration of patient specific information with medical reference material and decision support tools.
