Spectral Transforms as a Tool to Optimize Digital Phenotyping in Biological Images.

Modern livestock breeding has mastered genotyping. Genome-wide association studies, genomic selection, and SNP arrays enable genetic merit prediction at lower cost. However, phenotyping remains the bottleneck, as manual measurement is slow, expensive, subjective, and unable to capture spatial or temporal trait organization. Digital phenotyping via artificial intelligence could resolve this, but deep learning requires thousands of labelled examples, impractical when phenotyping cost itself limits datasets to hundreds of individuals. This creates a paradox: AI could accelerate phenotyping but requires large numbers of samples to train the models. Here, we demonstrate that integrating computer vision with machine learning offers sample-efficient digital phenotyping using eggshell colour as a model system. Rather than learning features from scratch (deep learning), we engineer physically motivated features via Wavelet transforms that decompose images into multi-scale spatial components. Wavelet features captured 14.2 percentage points more variance (R2 = 0.976 vs. 0.834, p < 0.001) than standard colorimetry, with 50% better sample efficiency (achieving at n = 60 what colorimetry required n = 120). Variance decomposition revealed 77% of discriminative capacity derives from spatial patterns (bands, spots, gradients) invisible to scalar averages. Additionally, we identified "cryptic phenotypes" (3.3%) where spatial patterns contradicted average colour, cases where colorimeters failed but Wavelets succeeded. The underlying principle-that spatial decomposition can recover organizational information lost by scalar averaging-may be applicable to other traits with spatial or temporal structure, such as marbling, dermatitis, or pigmentation rhythms, although whether comparable performance gains would be observed remains to be tested empirically. Hence, for breeding programs implementing genomic selection, computer vision-based digital phenotyping captures complex trait variation without massive training datasets, addressing the bottleneck that increasingly limits genetic progress as genotyping becomes trivial.

The multiscale hermite transform for local orientation analysis.

The efficient representation of local differential structure at various resolutions has been a matter of great interest for adaptive image processing and computer vision tasks. In this paper, we derive a multiscale model to represent natural images based on the scale-space representation: a model that has an inspiration in the human visual system. We first derive the one-dimensional case and then extend the results to two and three dimensions. The operators obtained for analysis and synthesis stages are derivatives of the Gaussian smoothing kernel, so that, for the two-dimensional case, we can represent them either in a rotated coordinate system or in terms of directional derivatives. The method to perform the rotation is efficient because it is implemented by means of the application of the so-called generalized binomial filters. Such a family of discrete sequences fulfills a number of properties that allows estimating the local orientation for several image structures. We also define the discrete counterpart in which the coordinate normalization of the continuous case is approximated as a subsampling of the discrete domain.

Leadership demands creativity and vision--can they be taught?

Leatt and Porter offer views on the principles of leadership development for the future of healthcare and propose a "new model for developing healthcare leaders em leader that could transform the educational process and improve outcomes" for organizations as a whole. They maintain that the healthcare "educational process needs to be designed to enhance senior healthcare leaders' competency, prepare them for action and ultimately increase leadership and system performance and quality." As a tool to achieve these goals, Leatt and Porter present a model for learning based on 10 principles that, among other things, address what they see as the "need to increase our ability to identify, quantify, develop, measure and evaluate competencies for healthcare leaders." In the viewpoint of this commentator, written from his observations as a CEO, the most critical competencies in a leader, and the least susceptible to measurement, are creativity and vision. In the business world, as in the healthcare sector, these traits are absolutely necessary for leaders to deal effectively with known and unforeseen demands on their organizations, ongoing problems of scarce resources and, particularly in the Canadian healthcare sector, the need for leaders to negotiate with all levels of government to improve the system.

A neural model of high-level motion processing: line motion and formotion dynamics.

The percepts known variously as the line motion illusion, motion induction, and transformational apparent motion have attracted a great deal of experimental interest, since they sensitively probe interactions between preattentive and attentive vision processes. The present article develops a neural model that qualitatively explains essentially all the data reported thus far, and quantitatively simulates key illustrative percepts. The model suggests how these data arise from neural mechanisms of preattentive boundary and surface formation, long-range apparent motion, formotion interactions, and spatial attention. The boundary and surface formation processes model aspects of the interblob V1-->interstripe V2-->V4 and blob V1-->thin stripe V2-->V4 cortical processing streams, respectively. The long-range apparent motion process models aspects of the V1-->MT-->MST processing stream. An interstream V2-->MT form-motion interaction is proposed to allow the motion processing stream to track transient properties of emergent boundaries and filled-in surface colors from the form processing stream. It does so by generating motion waves using the long-range apparent motion process. This interstream interaction controls the formation of form-motion percepts, which are herein called formotion percepts. Other transients directly cause motion waves within the motion processing stream. All the data are attributed to properties of such motion waves. It is also suggested how bottom-up motion mechanisms can engage top-down attention as part of the motion capture process that solves the aperture problem. This interaction is proposed to occur between areas MT and MST. The model hereby explains how attention can be engaged even in percepts whose explanation can be derived from preattentive mechanisms.

Evidence for a role of action in colour perception.

Action is not usually considered to play a role in colour perception. However, sensorimotor theories of perception (eg O'Regan and Noë, 2001 Behavior and Brain Science 24 939-1011) suggest that, on the contrary, the transformations created by action in the sensory input are a necessary condition for all perception. In the case of colour vision, eye movements may explain how a retina with significant irregularities in resolution and cone arrangement (Roorda and Williams, 1999 Nature 397 520-522) could permit the perception of a richly coloured world (Clark and O'Regan, 2000 15th International Conference on Pattern Recognition volume 2: Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks pp 503-506; Skaff et al, 2002 16th International Conference on Pattern Recognition volume 2, pp 681-684). We provide evidence that perception of colour is modified when an artificial coupling is introduced linking eye movements and colour changes. After 40 min of wearing left-field-blue/right-field-yellow spectacles, observers' colour vision adapts so that, after removing the spectacles, white patches seem to become bluer when the eyes move rightwards and yellower when the eyes move leftwards. This induced dependence of colour perception on the direction of eye saccade is shown to be related to the amount of eye movements during exposure. This result, which cannot be explained either by retinal adaptation, or by a conditioned association between colour and side, constitutes first clear evidence for a role of eye movements in perceived colour and argues for the involvement in colour perception of neural mechanisms continuously tuned to sensorimotor contingencies.

The commerce of ideas: Internets and Intranets.

Academic physicians pride themselves on their intelligent use of medical technology, their innovativeness, and their ability to market their excellence to the public. Although this pride is extraordinarily justified in the areas of clinical medicine, biomedical research, and health sciences education, academic physicians have less reason to be proud of their accomplishments in the area of information management. In years past, a lack of attention to coherent information management had few consequences so long as there were foci of excellence in clinical disciplines, libraries, core research laboratories, and selected training programs. But the widespread adoption of network-based communications has changed both the priorities of faculty and the information infrastructure necessary to maintain a competitive advantage. In the arena of health care information technology, many medical centers have chosen indiscriminate consumption over focused leadership. This essay speculates on how technologies based on the World Wide Web (WWW) may affect academic medicine through both the greater penetration of the Internet and a wider use of internal "intranets." The Internet is transforming the landscape of biomedical publishing, biomedical education, and the hospital library. The intranet is becoming a vital means of providing documents to support the administration of academic medicine and, in many circumstances, the delivery of patient-specific information. Although there is great potential for transformation, many academic medical centers have not yet fully demonstrated either the wisdom to advance a great information-technology vision or the will necessary to turn a vision into a coherent plan of action.

An imaging system with calibrated color image acquisition for use in dermatology.

We propose a novel imaging system useful in dermatology, more precisely, for the follow-up of patients with an increased risk of skin cancer. The system consists of a Pentium PC equipped with an RGB frame grabber, a three-chip charge coupled devices (CCD) camera controlled by the serial port and equipped with a zoom lens and a halogen annular light source. Calibration of the imaging system provides a way to transform the acquired images, which are defined in an unknown color space, to a standard, well-defined color space called sRGB. sRGB has a known relation to the CIE1 XYZ and CIE L*a*b* colorimetric spaces. These CIE color spaces are based on the human vision, and they allow the computation of a color difference metric called CIE deltaE*ab, which is proportional to the color difference, as seen by a human observer. Several types of polynomial RGB to sRGB transforms will be tried, including some optimized in perceptually uniform color spaces. The use of a standard and well-defined color space also allows meaningful exchange of images, e.g., in teledermatology. The calibration procedure is based on 24 patches with known color properties, and it takes about 5 minutes to perform. It results in a number of settings called a profile that remains valid for tens of hours of operation. Such a profile is checked before acquiring images using just one color patch, and is adjusted on the fly to compensate for short-term drift in the response of the imaging system. Precision or reproducibility of subsequent color measurements is very good with (deltaE*ab) = 0.3 and deltaE*ab < 1.2. Accuracy compared with spectrophotometric measurements is fair with (deltaE*ab) = 6.2 and deltaE*ab < 13.3.

Engagement of gaze in capturing targets for future sequential manual actions.

We investigated the role of saccadic gaze fixations in encoding target locations for planning a future manual task consisting of a sequence of discrete target-oriented actions. We hypothesized that fixations of the individual targets are necessary for accurate encoding of target locations and that there is a transfer of sequence information from visual encoding to manual recall. Subjects viewed four targets presented at random positions on a screen. After various delays following target extinction, the subjects marked the remembered target locations on the screen with the tip of a hand-held stick. When the targets were presented simultaneously among distracting elements, the overall accuracy of marking increased with presentation time and total number of targets fixated because the subjects had to serially fixate the individual targets to locate them. Without distractors, the marking accuracy was similarly high regardless of duration of target presentation (0.25-8 s) and number of targets fixated; it was comparable to that with distractors when all four targets had been fixated. This indicates parallel encoding of target locations largely based on peripheral vision. Location memory was stable in these tasks over the delay periods investigated (0.5-8 s). With parallel encoding there was a "shrinkage" in the visuomotor transformation, i.e., the distances between the markings were systematically smaller than the corresponding inter-target distances. When the targets were presented sequentially without distractors, marking accuracy improved with the total number of targets fixated and shrinkage in the visuomotor transformation occurred only with parallel encoding, i.e., when subjects did not fixate the targets. In all experimental conditions for trials in which targets were fixated during encoding, there was little correspondence between the marking sequence and the sequence in which the targets were fixated. We conclude that subjects benefit from fixating targets for subsequent target-oriented manual actions when the targets are presented among distractors and when presented sequentially; when distinct targets are presented simultaneously against a blank background, they are efficiently encoded in parallel largely by peripheral vision.

EMS Agenda for the Future: where we are...where we want to be.

During the past 30 years, emergency medical services (EMS) in the United States have experienced explosive growth. The American health care system is now transforming, providing an opportune time to examine what we have learned over the past three decades in order to create a vision for the future of EMS. Over the course of several months, a multidisciplinary steering committee collaborated with hundreds of EMS-interested individuals, organizations, and agencies to develop the EMS Agenda for the Future. Fourteen EMS attributes were identified as requiring continued development in order to realize the vision established within the Agenda. They are integration of health services, EMS research, legislation and regulation, system finance, human resources, medical direction, education systems, public education, prevention, public access, communication systems, clinical care, information systems, and evaluation. Discussion of these attributes provides important guidance for achieving a vision for the future of EMS that emphasizes its critical role in American health care.

The sources of visual information to the primate frontal lobe: a novel role for the superior parietal lobule.

Reaching movements are performed in order to bring the hand to targets of interest. It is widely believed that the distributed cortical network underlying visual reaching transforms the information concerning the spatial location of the target into an appropriate motor command. Modern views decompose this process into sequences of coordinate transformations between informational domains. The set of cortical areas and pathways by which the information on target location is relayed from the visual areas of the occipital lobe to the motor areas of the frontal lobe have, so far, been poorly understood. Recent data from different fields of neuroscience offer the basis for a new definition of the cortical system subserving reaching and, at the same time, for a reconsideration of the nature of the underlying visuo-to-motor transformation.

Convolution relation within the three-dimensional diffraction image.

The amplitude in the image of a point source is (a constant times) the three-dimensional Fourier transform of the lens pupil, i.e., of the amplitude distribution of the converging waves in angle space. If the three-dimensional pupil has axial symmetry, it can be factored into a spherical shell and a one-dimensional function of distance along the axis. The amplitude in the image is given by the convolution of the Fourier transforms of the factors. On the axis, the amplitude is the Fourier transform of the one-dimensional function. Therefore the amplitude anywhere in the image is the convolution of the amplitude on the axis and the Fourier transform of the spherical shell.

Competition in health care: its evolution over the past decade.

Understanding the roller-coaster experience with the use of market forces in health care over the past ten years provides important context for discussions of likely future developments in the nature of competition. The period began with acceptance of managed care transforming the organization of medical care delivery and proceeded to a period in which many of the changes were reversed. The vision of integrated delivery has now been replaced with a vision of a more active role for consumers. But the greatest potential for a larger role for consumers lies in mechanisms that apply competitive pressure on providers to improve the quality of care that they provide and reduce their costs.

Motion and vision. II. Stabilized spatio-temporal threshold surface.

The stabilized contrast-sensitivity function measured at a constant retinal velocity is tuned to a particular spatial frequency, which is inversely related to the velocity chosen. The Fourier transforms of these constant-velocity passbands have the same form as retinal receptive fields of various sizes. At low velocities, in the range of the natural drift motions of the eye, the stabilized contrast-sensitivity function matches the normal, unstablized result. At higher velocities (corresponding to motions of objects in the environment), this curve maintains the same shape but shifts toward lower spatial frequencies. The constant-velocity passband is displaced across the spatio-temporal frequency domain in a manner that is almost symmetric about the constant-velocity plane at v = 2 deg/s. Interpolating these diagonal profiles by a suitable analytic expression, we construct the spatio-temporal threshold surface for stabilized vision, and display its properties in terms of the usual frequency parameters; e.g., at low spatial frequencies, the temporal response becomes nearly independent of spatial frequency, while at low temporal frequencies, the spatial response becomes independent of temporal frequency.

Malignant transformation of spontaneously regressed retinoblastoma, retinoma/retinocytoma variant.

The authors report on a case of a 7-year-old girl who was found on routine preschool screening at age 4 years to have unilateral decreased vision and a retinal lesion consistent clinically with the retinoma or retinocytoma variant of "spontaneously regressed retinoblastoma." The patient was followed closely with photographic documentation. After remaining stable for 3 years, her tumor grew rapidly and seeded the vitreous, prompting enucleation. Histopathologic examination disclosed that the newer elevated part of the tumor was an undifferentiated retinoblastoma, whereas the base of the tumor had the characteristic benign histopathologic features of retinoma/retinocytoma including bland nuclei, a fibrillar eosinophilic stroma, scattered fleurettes, calcific foci within viable tumor, and no mitoses. Immunohistochemical stains disclosed that immunoreactivity for retinal S antigen, S-100 protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein was confined to cells in the differentiated basal part of the tumor. These histopathologic observations support the concept that tumors with the clinical characteristics of the patient's original lesion are benign variants of retinoblastoma that have arisen de novo rather than retinoblastomas that have undergone spontaneous regression. The clinical developments in this case suggest that retinomas or retinocytomas rarely undergo malignant transformation after a period of clinical dormancy and underscore the necessity for close follow-up of patients with presumed regressed retinoblastoma.

[Modification of visual perception by vision training].

The course of the visual pathway as far as the sulcus temporalis superior is described and the change in the shape of the receptive fields is pointed out. The transformation of action potentials into conscious perception is interpreted as it was by Eccles. A connection is made between the problem of learning and the plasticity of the spine synapses, the capacity of which can be considerably increased. In conclusion, it is pointed out that in cases of macular disease it is possible to stimulate peripheral areas of the visual field by special training and thus to help the visual field by special training and thus to help the patient.

Shift of equiluminance in congenital color vision deficiencies: pattern-ERG, VEP and psychophysical findings.

We compared electrophysiological responses [pattern-ERG (PERG) and VEP] and psychophysical measures to color stimuli to separate different forms of anomalous color vision. PERG and VEP were recorded from seven normals and 14 subjects with congenital color vision deficiencies. Stimuli were color checkerboards with 0.5 deg check size, phase reversing at 34 rev/sec. The luminances of the red and green parts were varied in opposite direction from 0 to 30 cd/m2, while the hue of individual squares and space-averaged luminance were held constant. This allowed for one equiluminance condition where flicker appeared fused. In the seven normals, the subjective equiluminance was reached at a luminance ratio red/(red + green) = 0.50-0.53. At that point, the PERG amplitude was moderately, and the VEP amplitude sharply reduced. In 14 color anomalous subjects both the PERG and VEP were sharply reduced at equiluminance. These dips were shifted compared to normals and the dip position corresponded to the predicted luminance ratios obtained by calculations from L- and M-cone activation using the Smith-Pokorny transformation. As we found a close correlation of the VEP-dip position and the anomalous quotient, these electrophysiological measures may allow objective assessment of color vision deficiencies.
