Bistability in bubble formation.

We obtain experimental data on time intervals of a bubble train generated from a nozzle with the air flow rate as the control parameter. Varying the length of the hose that connects the proportionating solenoid valve to the nozzle, we generate bifurcation diagrams showing period-adding cascades, among other dynamical phenomena. Then we construct a two-parameter family of one-dimensional maps whose bifurcation diagrams qualitatively match the experimental ones. The model indicates the existence of parameters where two attractors coexist, a phenomenon called bistability, and the same behavior is fully confirmed in the experiment.

Nonlinear supratransmission and bistability in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model.

The recently discovered phenomenon of nonlinear supratransmission consists in a sudden increase of the amplitude of a transmitted wave triggered by the excitation of nonlinear localized modes of the medium. We examine this process for the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain, sinusoidally driven at one edge and damped at the other. The supratransmission regime occurs for driving frequencies above the upper band edge and originates from direct moving discrete breather creation. We derive approximate analytical estimates of the supratransmission threshold, which are in excellent agreement with numerics. When analyzing the long-time behavior, we discover that, below the supratransmission threshold, a conducting stationary state coexists with the insulating one. We explain the bistable nature of the energy flux in terms of the excitation of quasiharmonic extended waves. This leads to the analytical calculation of a lower-transmission threshold which is also in reasonable agreement with numerical experiments.

Theory of frequency and phase synchronization in a rocked bistable stochastic system.

We investigate the role of noise in the phenomenon of stochastic synchronization of switching events in a rocked, overdamped bistable potential driven by white Gaussian noise, the archetype description of stochastic resonance. We present an approach to the stochastic counting process of noise-induced switching events: starting from the Markovian dynamics of the nonstationary, continuous particle dynamics, one finds upon contraction onto two states a non-Markovian renewal dynamics. A proper definition of an output discrete phase is given, and the time rate of change of its noise average determines the corresponding output frequency. The phenomenon of noise-assisted phase synchronization is investigated in terms of an effective, instantaneous phase diffusion. The theory is applied to rectangular-shaped rocking signals versus increasing input-noise strengths. In this case, for an appropriate choice of the parameter values, the system exhibits a noise-induced frequency locking accompanied by a very pronounced suppression of the phase diffusion of the output signal. Precise numerical simulations corroborate very favorably our analytical results. The novel theoretical findings are also compared with prior ones.

Using particle shape to induce tilted and bistable liquid crystal anchoring.

We use Monte Carlo simulations of hard Gaussian overlap (HGO) particles symmetrically confined in slab geometry to investigate the role of particle-substrate interactions on liquid crystalline anchoring. Despite the restriction here to purely steric interactions and smooth substrates, a range of behaviors are captured, including tilted anchoring and homeotropic-planar bistability. These macroscopic behaviors are all achieved through appropriate tuning of the microscopics of the HGO-substrate interaction, based upon nonadditive descriptions for the HGO-substrate shape parameter.

Nonlinear Fano resonance and bistable wave transmission.

We consider a discrete model that describes a linear chain of particles coupled to a single-site defect with instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity. We show that this model can be regarded as a nonlinear generalization of the familiar Fano-Anderson model and it can generate amplitude-dependent bistable resonant transmission or reflection. We identify these effects as the nonlinear Fano resonance and study its properties for continuous waves and pulses.

Bistable diode action in left-handed periodic structures.

We study nonlinear transmission of an asymmetric multilayer structure created by alternating slabs of two materials with positive and negative refractive indices. We demonstrate that such a structure exhibits passive spatially nonreciprocal transmission of electromagnetic waves, the analog of the electronic diode. We study the properties of this left-handed diode and confirm its highly nonreciprocal and bistable transmittance by employing direct simulations.

Mechanism of bistability: tonic spiking and bursting in a neuron model.

Neurons can demonstrate various types of activity; tonically spiking, bursting as well as silent neurons are frequently observed in electrophysiological experiments. The methods of qualitative theory of slow-fast systems applied to biophysically realistic neuron models can describe basic scenarios of how these regimes of activity can be generated and transitions between them can be made. Here we demonstrate that a bifurcation of a codimension one can explain a transition between tonic spiking behavior and bursting behavior. Namely, we argue that the Lukyanov-Shilnikov bifurcation of a saddle-node periodic orbit with noncentral homoclinics may initiate a bistability observed in a model of a leech heart interneuron under defined pharmacological conditions. This model can exhibit two coexisting types of oscillations: tonic spiking and bursting, depending on the initial state of the neuron model. Moreover, the neuron model also generates weakly chaotic bursts when a control parameter is close to the bifurcation values that correspond to homoclinic bifurcations of a saddle or a saddle-node periodic orbit.

Bistability in the sine-Gordon equation: the ideal switch.

The sine-Gordon equation, used as the representative nonlinear wave equation, presents a bistable behavior resulting from nonlinearity and generating hysteresis properties. We show that the process can be understood in a comprehensive analytical formulation and that it is a generic property of nonlinear systems possessing a natural band gap. The approach allows one to discover that the sine-Gordon equation can work as an ideal switch by reaching a transmissive regime with vanishing driving amplitude.

Out-of-phase oscillatory Turing patterns in a bistable reaction-diffusion system.

A new type of out-of-phase oscillatory Turing pattern is found in simulations of a simple two-variable model of a bistable reaction-diffusion system consisting of an autocatalytic activator reacting with a substrate that is replenished by a flow. This class of models can describe pH oscillators or enzymatic reactions. No Hopf instability is necessary for this type of oscillatory Turing pattern.

Noise-induced spatiotemporal patterns in a bistable reaction-diffusion system: photoelectron emission microscopy experiments and modeling of the oxidation reaction on Ir(111).

We use photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) measurements to study the spatiotemporal patterns obtained for the CO oxidation reaction on Ir(111) as a function of the noise strength we superpose on the CO and the oxygen fractions of the constant total reactant gas flux. The investigations are focused on the bistable regime this reaction displays including its monostable vicinity. Simultaneously we analyze numerically the underlying reaction-diffusion (RD) equations in two spatial dimensions. For intrinsic and/or small strength of the external noise we find transitions from the locally stable to the globally stable branch via slow nucleation and growth of islands of the globally stable state: oxygen or CO, respectively. With increasing noise strength the number of islands as well as their growth rate increases. These phenomena are very well reproduced by numerical calculations of the RD model. For sufficiently large noise strength we observe bursts from CO rich to oxygen rich and back as well as switching between the two states. While such phenomena are also obtained from the model calculations, their experimentally observed spatial scales were not satisfactorily reproduced using the same approach as for the lower noise strengths.

Upper and lower bounds of stochastic resonance and noise-induced synchronization in a bistable oscillator.

This paper discusses concepts of stochastic resonance and noise-induced synchronization in a bistable oscillator subject to both periodic signal and noise. We demonstrate that stochastic resonance is not directly correlated with the matching of the signal frequency and the switching rate. The phenomena of stochastic resonance and noise-induced synchronization are the limiting cases of noise-induced transitions, and the spectral response heavily depends on the input signal-to-noise ratio. The lower and upper bounds of noise intensity allowing synchronization are found as functions of the system's parameters.

Bistability in scanning tunneling spectroscopy of Ga-terminated Si(111)

Bistable electron transport, a phenomenon usually associated with double-barrier structures, has been observed with a conventional STM junction formed between a metal tip and a Ga-terminated Si(111) surface at 77 K. Large hysteresis loops appear in the current-voltage characteristics when electrons are injected from the tip to the surface. The turn-on bias varies from -3.1 to -4.0 V and shows an inverse dependence on the tip-sample distance, indicating a strong field effect. The turn-off bias, however, is essentially pinned at a conductance threshold of -2.7 V.

Annihilation of one of the coexisting attractors in a bistable system

A small change of one of the system parameters may not in general convert a bistable system to a monostable system. However, an external control in the form of a slow periodic parameter modulation can annihilate one of the coexisting states, and thus results in controlled monostability. The annihilation takes place because the state becomes chaotic via the period doubling route and the chaotic state undergoes boundary crisis within a small range of the control amplitude. These features are observed theoretically in two standard models, namely, Henon map and laser rate equations, and confirmed experimentally in a cavity loss modulated CO2 laser.

Intrinsic bistability of luminescence and stimulated emission in Yb- and Tm-doped glass

Intrinsic bistability and hysteresis have been observed in the photoluminescence of bulk glass doped with Yb3+ and Tm3+ impurities at room temperature. Multiple instabilities also occur in channel waveguide lasers in this material. Consequently, local field effects exhibit more degrees of freedom than expected and have important implications for compact optical amplifiers and oscillators.

Noise induced stability in fluctuating, bistable potentials

The overdamped motion of a Brownian particle in an asymmetric, bistable, fluctuating potential shows noise induced stability: For intermediate fluctuation rates the mean occupancy of minima with an energy above the absolute minimum is enhanced. The model works as a detector for potential fluctuations being not too fast and not too slow. This effect occurs due to the different time scales in the problem. We present a detailed analysis of this effect using the exact solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for a simple model. Further we show that for not too fast fluctuations the system can be well described by effective rate equations. The results of the rate equations agree quantitatively with the exact results.

Bistability in pulse propagation in networks of excitatory and inhibitory populations.

We study the propagation of traveling solitary pulses in one-dimensional networks of excitatory and inhibitory integrate-and-fire neurons. Slow pulses, during which inhibitory cells fire well before neighboring excitatory cells, can propagate along the network at intermediate inhibition levels. At higher levels, they destabilize via a Hopf bifurcation. There is a bistable parameter regime in which both fast and slow pulses can propagate. Lurching pulses with spatiotemporal periodicity can propagate in regimes for which continuous pulses do not exist.

Noise-induced dynamics in bistable systems with delay.

Noise-induced dynamics of a prototypical bistable system with delayed feedback is studied theoretically and numerically. For small noise and magnitude of the feedback, the problem is reduced to the analysis of the two-state model with transition rates depending on the earlier state of the system. Analytical solutions for the autocorrelation function and the power spectrum have been found. The power spectrum has a peak at the frequency corresponding to the inverse delay time, whose amplitude has a maximum at a certain noise level, thus demonstrating coherence resonance. The linear response to the external periodic force also has maxima at the frequencies corresponding to the inverse delay time and its harmonics.
