The basic purpose of this study was to analyze the diffusion of computer-based information technology into the health care institutions of the Republic of Serbia in the year 1994, and to compare the results with a similar investigation in 1992 in order to determine the state and progress of its development. The instrument of investigation was a questionnaire with 24 questions, distributed to all the independent health institutions in Serbia (total 238). The overall response rate was 40.8%. Of the number of responding health institutions, 92.8% own computers which are in use, six PCs on average, and on average use two application softwares, obligatory one for accounting and billing. In conclusion, health care institutions in the Republic of Serbia are unsatisfactorily equipped with information technology and without the developed institutional information system, except on the level of the project. So, careful planning, selection, implementation and management with national coordination will be needed to ensure the appropriate use of technology and information systems in health care.

In the fall of 1972, interviews were conducted with 948 Yugoslavian women whose first pregnancies had been terminated by induced abortion (222) or delivery (726) during 1968-1969. Subjects were indentified from records of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of Skopje University, Macedonia. Subsequent pregnancies were studied to determine the relative effects of first-pregnancy abortion or delivery on incidences of adverse outcomes. No significant difference were found between first-pregnancy aborters and deliverers for subsequent conception rates, spontaneous abortions, or low-birth-weight rates. The data suggest that while induced abortion of the first pregnancy did not protect against the greater risk of low birth weight for a primiparous birth, neither did it increase that risk. The high proportion of women who denied their abortion raises questions about results of retrospective abortion studies which depend on patient recall.
The present study is the first randomized ten-year comparison of the standard, non-medicated Lippes Loop D and the same device with the addition of 200 mm2 of copper in the form of copper sleeves. The devices were randomly inserted immediately after first trimester medical termination of pregnancy. Out of 400 postabortal IUD insertions, 371 were followed for up to ten years. Gross cumulative life-table accidental pregnancy rates after one year of use were 0.56 for the copper-bearing Lippes Loop and 4.63 for the standard Lippes Loop. After two, four and ten years, these rates were 1.24, 2.70 and 3.62 and 6.03, 7.58 and 14.94, respectively (in all comparisons, rates were significantly different at the 0.05 level or lower). At each time interval, expulsion/displacement rates were 4.49, 4.49, 5.23 and 6.32 for the copper-bearing Lippes Loop and 12.61, 13.29, 15.46 and 19.79 for the standard Lippes Loop (rates were significantly different at the 0.01 level or lower). Differences in removal rates for bleeding and/or pain were not significantly different at any of the follow-up intervals. The lower event rates for copper-bearing Lippes Loop D users indicates that the addition of copper to the Lippes Loop IUD may result in better long-term efficacy profiles for this device among postabortal women. The results also suggest that large, medicated IUDs may be more efficacious for women with larger uteri who often experience higher failure rates due to expulsion or displacement of smaller IUDs into the lower uterine segment.

Benzo[a]pyrene monooxygenase (B[a]PMO) activity in non-migratory fish from a given river segment is highly correlated to the recent pollutional history of that part of the river. The enzyme activity level can serve as a relevant measure for the harmful pollutant potential in aquatic ecosystems. Caged experimental fish exposed for about 10 days in river segments show BaPMO activity changes with the same predictive validity as that of the natural population.
The concentrations of six PAHs (benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, ideno[1,2,3-c,d]-pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene and fluoranthene), and lead have been measured systematically for six winter periods from 1977/78 to 1982/83 in the urban air of the city of Zagreb. The average mass concentrations of PAHs were approximately 10 ng m-3. The distribution of PAHs in urban air is discussed. The analytical method for PAH determination is based on filter extraction, two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography and fluorescence spectrometry; lead is measured by atomic absorption.

45% of all pigs examined harboured L. monocytogenes in the tonsils, and 3% were faecal excretors. L. monocytogenes was demonstrated in 29% of swabs from the retropharyngeal nodes of cattle and in 19% of faecal samples. The tonsillar and retropharyngeal samples did not correspond to the faecal samples. L. monocytogenes was not demonstrated in the deeper parts of the muscle tissue from 12 beef carcasses all harbouring Listeria in lymph nodes. L. monocytogenes was found in 69% of minced meat (mixed pork and beef) samples. 19% of raw dry sausages and 21% of vacuum-packaged hot smoked sausages were positive for L. monocytogenes. L. monocytogenes was not detected in the hot smoked sausages heated to an internal temperature of 70-75 degrees C, after the smoking process.
