Divalent samarium compounds with heavier chalcogenolate (EPh; E = Se, Te) ligands.

Crystalline coordination complexes of Sm(EPh)2 (E = Se, Te) are described. The selenolate compound Sm(SePh)2 is unstable in solution, but a divalent selenolate can be prepared and isolated when precisely 1 equiv of Zn(SePh)2 is present to form heterometallic [(THF)3Sm(mu 2-SePh)3Zn(mu 2-SePh)]n (1). This compound is a 1D coordination polymer with alternating Sm(II) and Zn(II) ions connected by an alternating (1,3) number of bridging selenolate ligands and three THF ligands bound to each Sm(II) ion. The tellurolate Sm(TePh)2 forms a stable pyridine coordination compound (py)5Sm(TePh)2 (2) that is isostructural with known Eu and Yb benzenetellurolates. Both compounds were characterized by conventional spectroscopic methods. Polymer 1 was characterized by low-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the unit cell of the tellurolate was determined. Crystal data (Mo K alpha, 153(5) (K) are as follows. 1: monoclinic space group P21, a = 10.666(2) A, b = 16.270(3) A, c = 12.002(3) A, beta = 114.81(2) degrees, Z = 2.2: orthorhombic space group Pbca, with a = 13.865(3) A, b = 16.453(5) A, c = 31.952(7) A, Z = 8.

An easy, efficient, and completely stereoselective synthesis of (E)-alpha,beta-unsaturated esters via sequential aldol-type/elimination reactions promoted by samarium diiodide or chromium dichloride.

(E)-Alpha,beta-unsaturated esters can be obtained with complete stereoselectivity by reaction of different aldehydes and ethyl dibromoacetate promoted by SmI(2) or CrCl(2). The transformation takes place as two sequential reactions: an aldol-type reaction and a beta-elimination reaction.

Fluorescence from Samarium(II) Iodide and Its Electron Transfer Quenching: Dynamics of the Reaction of Benzyl Radicals with Sm(II).

The luminescence from SmI(2) in THF can be readily quenched by a variety of electron acceptors. In the case of organohalides, the reaction is quite fast; for example, for dichloromethane the rate constant is 2.7 x 10(8) M(-)(1) s(-)(1). Electron transfer leads to halide loss and formation of the carbon-centered radical. In the case of benzyl chloride, the benzyl radicals produced can be readily detected using laser flash photolysis techniques. This electron-transfer reaction has been used as a source of benzyl radicals in order to determine the rate constant for their reaction with SmI(2); the value obtained is (5.3 +/- 1.4) x 10(7) M(-)(1) s(-)(1) in THF at room temperature. The effect of HMPA on the spectroscopic properties of SmI(2) has also been examined.

Samarium Ion-Promoted Cross-Aldol Reactions and Tandem Aldol/Evans-Tishchenko Reactions.

Cross-aldol reactions of carbonyl compounds were achieved by the catalysis of SmI(2) or SmI(3), together with molecular sieves, at ambient temperature. 1,3-Dichloroacetone and 1-chloroacetone can be used as acceptor substrates in the cross-aldol reactions with donor substrates such as acetone, cyclopentanone, and cyclohexanone. The cross-aldol reactions with (R)-glyceraldehyde acetonide gave optically pure compounds 25-32, the stereochemistry of which was in agreement with a chairlike chelate transition state of dipolar mode. SmI(2)-molecular sieves or SmI(3)-molecular sieves also functioned as effective Lewis acids to catalyze tandem aldol/Evans-Tishchenko reactions. The aldol/Evans-Tishchenko reactions of methyl ketones with aldehydes occurred at 0 degrees C to give alpha,gamma-anti diol monoesters 53a-59a. When the reactions were conducted at room temperature, a certain degree of transesterification took place. The aldol/Evans-Tishchenko reactions of ethyl or benzyl ketones with aldehydes yielded alpha,beta-anti-alpha,gamma-anti diol monoesters 60a-65a. However, the aldol/Evans-Tishchenko reactions of cyclic ketones with benzaldehyde occurred with a different stereoselectivity to give alpha,beta-syn-alpha,gamma-anti diol monoesters 66a-76a. The structures of products were determined by chemical and spectroscopic methods including an X-ray diffraction analysis of 72a derived from the reaction of 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone and benzaldehyde. A reaction mechanism involving dissociation-recombination of aldols followed by intramolecular stereoselective hydride shift is proposed, based on some experimental evidence, to explain the dichotomous stereoselectivity using acyclic or cyclic ketones as the reaction substrates.

Reactions of novel reactive species generated by Samarium(II)-mediated one-electron reduction of fischer-type carbene complexes

Two types of novel reactive species were generated by one-electron reductions of Fischer-type carbene complexes. In the case of tungsten complexes, one-electron reductions generated anion radical species, which added to electron-deficient olefins to give addition products. In the case of chromium complexes, carbonyl insertion occurred to give acyl chromate complexes, which underwent 1, 4-addition to various electron-deficient olefins.

Samarium diiodide-induced asymmetric synthesis of optically pure unsymmetrical vicinal diamines by reductive cross-coupling of nitrones with N-tert-butanesulfinyl imines.

[reaction: see text] An efficient method for the preparation of optically pure unsymmetrical vicinal diamines by the SmI(2)-induced reductive cross-coupling of nitrones with chiral N-tert-butanesulfinyl imines was developed. This is the first successful example of the highly diastereoselective and enantioselective cross-coupling between two different imine species. It provides a straightforward access to enantiopure unsymmetrical vicinal diamines that are widely applicable in asymmetric synthesis.

Stereoselective pinacol coupling of chiral formylferrocene using divalent samarium triflate: preparation of a new chiral bisferrocenyl oxazoline ligand and its application to asymmetric Diels-Alder reactions.

[reaction: see text] The pinacol coupling reaction of planar chiral ortho-oxazoline-substituted formylferrocene was smoothly mediated by SmI2 or Sm(OTf)3 to give the (R,R) isomer selectivity (up to 76% diastereomeric excess). The combination of Yb(OTf)3 and the (R,R)-ferrocenyl diol was revealed to be a good catalyst for the asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of 3-acyloxazolidinone with cyclopentadiene, and the endo adduct was produced in up to 80% enantiomeric excess.
