Studies on the influence of auxiliary substances on the physico-chemical characteristics of ophthalmic drugs. Part I. Studies on the influence of auxiliary substances on the critical micellar concentration of surfactants solutions in eye drops containing sulphacetamidum natricum.

Interactions between Tweens, surfactants used in eye drops and the remaining compounds of the preparations were investigated. The interactions were assessed by means of the surface tension measurement method. Obtained results demonstrate that the substances used in the facture of the preparation affect the critical micellar concentrations of Tweens. Only hydroxyethylcellulose was found to exert a stabilizing effect on the critical micellar concentration of these substances. The amount of used surfactant should be taken into consideration in the manufacture of eye preparations.

Spectrophotometric determination of sulphacetamide.

A new rapid selective spectrophotometric method for the determination of sulphacetamide is described. The drug forms a orange-yellow colored complex with Cerium(IV) in sulfuric acid media which is extracted into ethyl acetate. The complex exhibits a maximum absorbance at 440 nm with a molar absorptivity of 3 x 10(2) 1 mol-1 cm-1. The system obeys Beer's law in the concentration range of 0.07-1.1 mg of sulphacetamide. The various parameters for the optimum extraction conditions are discussed. The method is applied to the determination of sulphacetamide in dosage forms.

The treatment of rosacea.

The roundtable discussion encompassed many topics-from seminal research by Ronald Marks to the latest National Rosacea Society-funded studies on the pathophysiology of rosacea. All participants commented on the value of the new National Rosacea Society classification system for subtypes of rosacea, designed to direct future research and help physicians better diagnose and manage these subtypes. A lively discussion centered on treatment options for the various subtypes of rosacea ensued.

Facial hygiene and comprehensive management of rosacea.

The skin of patients with rosacea is exquisitely sensitive to various dietary, environmental, and topical factors that initiate the facial erythema characteristic of this sensitive skin condition. This sensitivity is probably due to epidermal barrier dysfunction. Overall management of rosacea involves the avoidance of dietary and environmental triggers, concurrent with the use of prescription therapies. The appropriate selection of over-the-counter and prescription skin care products is equally important. This article reviews the use of therapeutic skin cleansers, including the newest category of prescription antimicrobial cleansers, which can enhance the overall management of this inflammatory dermatologic disorder.
