BACKGROUND: The participants of European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ELSPAC) are women permanently resident in Brno, whose expected term of delivery corresponded with the prelimited period. In midpregnancy, 3327 of them filled in two research questionnaires with data concerning their marital status, health, education, dwelling, their up-bringing and stress in childhood as the essential information for the study of birth weight and gestational age variations of expected newborns. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sharing the flat with the parental generation, heating with solid fuel or gas and more smokers at home meant the risk for antenatal development of foetus. A certain influence seemed to have the number of rooms, too. Education of the mother-to-be as well as that of her partner and partly of her mother, too, determined the birth weight. To a certain degree, partner's position in employment and his health status played also a role. An important factor predetermining the birth weight and gestational age was the marital status of the mother: in the best situation were children born in complete families and greatly handicapped were offsprings of single mothers not living with their partners. CONCLUSIONS: Small influence on the prenatal development had the medical history of mothers, character of the upbringing in their original families and presence stressogenic events occurring in their girlhood up to 18 years of age.

The study determined the overall contribution of atmospheric air pollution and socioeconomic and other factors on population health, as well as the role of medical providence in the lowering of population morbidity. The study shows that different individual factors of medical providence have different effects on medicodemographic situation. Also different is the significance of various characteristics of socioeconomic conditions. The results demonstrate that the contribution of air pollutants and their mixtures into male and female mortality in various age groups is different and depends on the cause of death and pathogenetic peculiarities of the action of the components.
By means of a multipractice investigation in which 347 general practitioners participated, 293 schemata were collected about patients who had undertaken suicidal acts. The material consists of 66 suicides and 227 attempted suicides. By and large, the sex and age distributions correspond to those in previous investigations. The number of attempted suicides in this investigation was only half of that anticipated. This may be due to lapse, seasonal variations, underrepresentation of urban practice etc. Strikingly many patients undertook acts in this material without having psychiatric diagnoses and the psychiatric diagnosis did not appear to play any part as regards whether the suicidal act lead to suicide. The methods employed appear otherwise to reflect development in society and pharmacotherapy. Where men were concerned, it appears that suicide is relatively most common among widowers, unemployed and early retirees while, where women were concerned, divorcees and early retirees were most frequently involved. Attempted suicide is most frequently carried out by unemployed men and by divorced and early retirees of both sexes. This investigation cannot indicate any definite occupational group which involves a risk as regards suicidal acts and economical factors appear only to play a part where attempted suicide is concerned.
