Estimation of internal and external exposures of terrestrial reference organisms to natural radionuclides in the environment.

In this paper, an estimation of the doses absorbed by terrestrial reference organisms due to naturally occurring radionuclides is described. For terrestrial organisms under normal circumstances, external exposure is estimated to be of the order of 0.1-0.4 mGy a(-1), depending on size and habitat, and the main contributor is 40K. Internal background exposures of terrestrial organisms are more variable. Again, 40K is an important contributor giving doses of the order of 0.3 mGy a(-1). The exposures of muscles and plant tissues to uranium, thorium, radium, lead and polonium are lower, but liver, bone and kidney may be exposed at levels of 0.1-1 mGy a(-1) absorbed dose. There can also be significant increases in the received dose under specific environmental conditions as is the case for burrowing mammals that receive relatively high lung doses due to the inhalation of radon and its progeny.

Establishment and characteristics of a hamster lung adenocarcinoma in vivo and in vitro.

Several cell lines designated HLAC were derived from primary lung carcinomas induced in Syrian hamsters by polonium-210 or benzo[a]pyrene. Primary tumor nodules were initially transplanted into cheek pouches, and the tumors that grew were passed into tissue culture and into the cheek pouches of other hamsters for continued in vivo passage. By serial passage and cloning, cell lines were isolated with plating efficiencies of 20-50% in vitro and 10-25% when cultured directly from solid tumors. These cells formed adenocarcinomas in vivo. The radiosensitivities in vitro of HLAC-4 and HLAC-14 varied; observed D0 (the inverse of the slope of the exponential portion of the survival curve) values were 80 and 155 rads, respectively; n (the dose at which the exponential portion of the survival curve extrapolates to 100% survival) values were approximately 1.8. Survival curves obtained following in situ irradiation of 4- to 5-mm3 HLAC-4 tumors showed a D0 of 80 rads and an n of 7. Morphology and growth characteristics of two HLAC cell lines in vivo and in vitro were described.

NORM workers: a challenge for internal dosimetry programmes.

The mining, milling and processing of uranium and thorium bearing minerals may result in radiation doses to workers. The control of occupational exposures from these natural sources of radiation imposes a challenge to regulators and radiation protection advisers. A survey pilot programme, which included six mines in Brazil and a monazite plant, was established, consisting of the collection and analysis of concentrations of uranium, thorium and polonium in urine, faeces and air samples. Results from workers were compared to background data from their families living in the same area and from residents from the population of Rio de Janeiro. Positive exposure results were identified among the coal miners, the niobium miners and the monazite sand workers. Difficulties in the application of internal dosimetry programmes are discussed in relation to the control of NORM workers.

Radon progeny as sources of gross-alpha radioactivity anomalies in ground water.

Gross-alpha radiation data from ground water samples are subject to variability introduced as a result of analytical procedure. For example, ground water in the surficial aquifer of central Florida commonly has gross-alpha radioactivity in excess of 555 Bq m-3 (15 pCi L-1). This activity, commonly unsupported by Ra, often results from the 222Rn progeny. The relatively short-lived daughters of 222Rn can give rise to variations in gross-alpha measurements of up to 2 orders of magnitude in replicate samples. Polonium-210, a longer-lived Rn daughter, is also found in concentrations greater than predicted by the Ra content. As a consequence, it is suggested that gross-alpha measurements include Po analyses with Ra and U when standards are exceeded. It should be recognized that, depending on the activity of 210Pb, 210Po activity may vary significantly with holding time. Variations of measured Po activity in replicate samples collected and prepared by present methods indicate that Po analyses may be inconsistent and frequently underestimate total Po activity. Sample preparation methods and measurement techniques are discussed which greatly improve the overall accuracy and consistency of gross-alpha and Po analyses.

Natural radionuclide and plutonium content in Black Sea bottom sediments.

The content of uranium, thorium, radium, lead, polonium, and plutonium in bottom sediments and algae from two locations at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast have been determined. Some parent:progeny ratios for evaluation of the geochemical behavior of the nuclides have been estimated as well. The extractable and total uranium and thorium are determined by two separate radiochemical procedures to differentiate the more soluble chemical forms of the elements and to estimate the potential hazard for the biosphere and for humans. No distinct seasonal variation as well as no significant change in total and extractable uranium (also for 226Ra) content is observed. The same is valid for extractable thorium while the total thorium content in the first two seasons is slightly higher. Our data show that 210Po content is accumulated more in the sediments than 210Pb, and the evaluated disequilibria suggest that the two radionuclides belong to more recent sediment layers deposited in the slime samples compared to the silt ones for the different seasons. The obtained values for plutonium are in the lower limits of the data cited in literature, which is quite clear as there are no plutonium discharge facilities at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The obtained values for the activity ratio 238Pu:239 + 240Pu are higher for Bjala sediments compared to those of Kaliakra. The ratio values are out of the variation range for the global contamination with weapon tests fallout plutonium which is probably due to Chernobyl accident contribution. The dependence of natural radionuclide content on the sediment type as well as the variation of nuclide accumulation for two types of algae in two sampling locations for five consecutive seasons is evaluated. No serious contamination with natural radionuclides in the algae is observed.

Evidence of high natural radiation doses in certain mid-water oceanic organisms.

Concentrations of the naturally occurring radioactive nuclide polonium-210 were determined in mid-water crustaceans and fish from depths to 1500 meters. Unusually high levels were found in certain categories of organisms, indicating that these organisms were exposed to a particularly high natural radiation dose. The results have implications in terms of possible radiation effects, as a baseline against which artificial radioactive nuclides can be compared, and as a potential technique for studying the feeding behavior of mid-water organisms.

Effect of 50-Hz electromagnetic field on the retention of toxic radionuclides in rat tissues.

The effect of electromagnetic field (EMF) 50 Hz, 10 mT, on the tissue retention of radiotoxic polonium-210 and thorium-234 was studied in a rat model. Regarding 210Po in the ionic state, small but significant effects were obtained by exposure of rats to EMF either before the intravenous injection of 210Po (pre-exposure) or after the rats had already been injected with 210Po (post-exposure). When compared with control values, pre-exposure to EMF caused a significant 28% decrease in the retention of 210Po in the skin and a 10% decrease in total 210Po retention in the investigated tissues. Relative to controls, post-exposure resulted in a 131% increase in 210Po retention only in the thymus. Regarding carrier-free 234Th in the ionic state, both types of EMF exposure caused a substantial increase in 234Th retention in the liver and spleen and a decrease of 234Th in the bones. A different effect of EMF on the retention of 234Th in the body was obtained when the mass of thorium was increased by adding as carrier 232Th (50 micrograms kg-1 body mass). With pre-exposure, a significant 10% decrease in the high retention of 234Th in the liver (77% of injected radioactivity) was observed. On the other hand, with post-exposure no significant changes in retention of 234Th were found in the tissues.

A multidisciplinary approach to the study of the fluminense vegetation.

The fluminense vegetation, more specifically the flora from the Jurubatiba restinga has been investigated by a multidisciplinary team of botanists, chemist, radiobiologist, insect physiologists and geneticist. Vouchers of 564 specimens have been collected, identified, organized in an herbarium, and a database is being build up containing, in addition to classical botanical data, chemical data and information on the potential economic use either for landscape gardening, alternative foods or as medicinal plants. Phytochemical studies of the Guttiferae, Clusia hilariana, yielded oleanolic acid and nemorosone. Their biological activities against the haematophagous insect Rhodnius prolixus vector of Chagas disease have been investigated. Finally, it has been observed that aquatic plants possessed high levels of the natural radionuclide polonium-210, which seems to be originated mainly from soil rather than from atmospheric supply.

A device for the complete elimination of static electricity in paraffin sectioning.

In paraffin sectioning static electricity is often induced by friction between the knife and the block. The section can be discharged by ionizing the air in the vicinity of the paraffin. This can be achieved by mounting a strip containing radioactive polonium near the microtome knife. This approach implies a certain radiological risk. An alternative solution is to apply a high electric field close to the knife. The latter method may offer hazards related to the high tension and production of ozone. In comparing the risks and benefits of the two methods we have concluded that the application of a high electric field offers less risks to people in the working area than the installation of a radioactive source. The costs of the two methods are of the same order.

Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of 210Po alpha-particles versus X-rays on lethality in bovine endothelial cells.

PURPOSE: Alpha-radiation from polonium-210 ((210)Po) can elevate background radiation dose by an order of magnitude in people consuming large quantities of meat and seafood, particularly caribou and reindeer. Because up to 50% of the ingested (210)Po body burden is initially found in the blood, a primary target for the short range alpha-particles is the endothelial cells lining the blood vessels. This study examined the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of (210)Po alpha-particles versus 250 kVp X-rays in producing injury to cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiation effects on cells were measured in four different ways: the percentage viable cells by trypan blue dye exclusion, the number of live cells, the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release to medium and the ability to form colonies (clonogenic survival). RESULTS: Comparison of dose-response curves yielded RBE values of 13.1+/-2.5 (SEM) for cell viability, 10.3+/-1.0 for live cell number and 11.1+/-3.0 for LDH activity. The RBE values for clonogenic survival were 14.0+/-1.0 based on the ratio of the initial slopes of the dose-response curves and 13.1, 9.9 and 7.7 for 50, 10 and 1% survival rate, respectively. At X-ray doses <0.25 Gy, a pronounced stimulatory effect on proliferation was noted. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to (210)Po alpha-particles was seven to 14 times more effective than X-ray exposure in causing endothelial cell damage.

[Evaluation of the exposure levels to radioactivity in the hot-spring environment of the Island of Ischia during a year].

It is known that the decay products of the U-238 are findable in nature in certain materials (such as tufa, limestone, etc.), therefore some populations are naturally exposed to radiations originated by building materials, houses and isotopes present in drinking-waters. It is evident that, for example, the residents of Campania or Lazio will be involved, on such conditions and during their whole life, in the action of natural radiations of decay products of Uranium and consequently of Radon, which is originated and, as gas, also findable in the air of those indoor areas, at a concentration inversely proportional to the relevant ventilation factors. Furthermore, it is known that this isotope is always found in thermal waters too and sometimes at levels which make them classify as radioactive and with therapeutic properties still subjects of studies and researches. Actually, presence of Radon in warm waters is particularly evident in some basins (the Baths of Badgastein in Austria) and is also findable in some italian thermal towns such as Merano Laurisia, Abano, Baths of Lucca or the island of Ischia itself. All underground waters and especially the warm ones, including, those of Ischia basins, hold radioactive isotopes, since their composition is related to the nature of the underground, which they come from, and is strongly influenced by the kind of rocks present in that area, by the granulometry of the geological strata or by existent fractures, by flow speed and finally by solubilization capacity. On such conditions it is evident that all waters, during their scouring, will be enriched by Radon 222 (a gaseous, therefore more soluble, element); just because of its physical state, it will be more present in external environment in case of warm waters such as those ones now examined. Consequently the environmental state from a radioecological point of view of the utilized waters has to be considered, as well as any other thermal resort, fundamentally due to Radon (Rn) and to the relevant decay products. As a matter of fact, whereas from the family of Uranium come Radon (Rn 222), Lead (Pb 210) and Polonium (Po 210), these last two, respectively with halving-times of 22.3 years and 138.4 days, from the family of Thorium (Th 232) originates Radon (Rn 220 in past times defined "Toron" according to its "forebear") and Lead (Pb 212 with a halving-time of 10.6 hours).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

[Modifying effect of the chemical components of dust on the induction of lung tumors by physical and chemical carcinogens (experimental study].

Chronic inhalation intake of benzo(a)pyrene (BP) and polonium-210 (210Po) together with aluminum oxide caused increase of tumor formation in the lungs of mice. Synergy of BP and 210Po carcinogenic effect was pointed out, it was characterized by summation and possible effect involution by tumor development rates and the duration of the latent period. BP and 210Po carcinogenic effectiveness depended on the type of dust carrier and probably on the presence of silicon dioxide and also carcinogenic metals. It was pointed out that further studies were necessary to determine an etiologic role of mineral dust chemical components in carcinogenic activity of the above substances and also carcinogenic effectiveness of dusts as carriers of chemical carcinogens and alpha-active radionuclides.

[Alpha-spectroscopic determination of 210Pb and 210PO in snow samples].

The concentrations of 210Pb and 210PO in several snow samples were determined using alpha-spectrometry. After 5 l of snow-melt water was subjected to coprecipitation of both nuclides with AlPO4, the solvent extraction procedure with TBP (tri-butyl phosphate)-isopropyl ether was applied to purify the polonium fraction, followed by the spontaneous electro-deposition on a Ni-sheet. The alpha-spectrum was measured with a Si(Au)-semiconductor detector coupled with a multichannel pulse-height analyzer. After the first determination of 210PO, the concentration of 210Pb was estimated from second measurement of 210PO grown newly from the remaining Pb-fraction during the storage period of more than 3 months. In these analytical procedures, 212Pb and 208PO tracers were conveniently utilized for the determination of collection yield for 210Pb and of the final chemical yield of 210PO, respectively. The contents of 210PO and 210Pb in the fresh snow were 3--30 mBq/l(81--810 fCi/l) and 250--720 mBq/l (6.8--19.5 pCi/l), respectively, and the residence time of 210Pb was given to be 6--12 days from the decay-growth relationships of both nuclides.

[Pages from history].

In March 1896, not long after the discovery of X rays by W. Röntgen, H. Becquerel discovers the "uranic rays" emitted by the element uranium. In 1898, M. Curie observes that minerals containing uranium are more radioactive than the uranium they contain; she infers that yet unknown radioactive elements are present in minute quantities in these minerals. A few months later, P. and M. Curie, after an exhausting labour, discover polonium and radium. The "physiological action" of the rays emitted by radium are observed for the first time in 1900-1901. E. Rutherford and F. Soddy show, in Montreal, in 1902, that radioactivity is a spontaneous transmutation of one chemical element in another. The discovery of the atomic nucleus and of nuclear reactions will lead F. and I. Joliot-Curie to discover artificial radioactivity in 1934.

Cancer risk in relation to radioactivity in tobacco.

Leaf tobacco contains minute amounts of lead 210 (210Pb) and polonium 210 (210Po), both of which are radioactive carcinogens and both of which can be found in smoke from burning tobacco. Tobacco smoke also contains carcinogens that are nonradioactive. People who inhale tobacco smoke are exposed to higher concentrations of radioactivity than nonsmokers. Deposits of 210Pb and alpha particle-emitting 210Po form in the lungs of smokers, generating localized radiation doses far greater than the radiation exposures humans experience from natural sources. This radiation exposure, delivered to sensitive tissues for long periods of time, may induce cancer both alone and synergistically with nonradioactive carcinogens. This article explores the relationship between the radioactive and nonradioactive carcinogens in leaf tobacco and tobacco smoke and the risk of cancer in those who inhale tobacco smoke.

Radium, Marie Curie and modern science.

In 1898, the discovery of two new elements, polonium and radium, reawakened interest in the topic of uranic rays discovered 2 years before by H. Becquerel. Radioactivity, a name coined by Marie Curie, became a major research field for decades. The contrasting personalities of Pierre Curie, already a first-rank physicist, and of the young Marie Curie-Sklodowska as they undertook their common work are described. It is shown how a well-chosen quantitative method and a systematic approach combining physics and chemistry led to the discovery within less than 1 year. The special role of radium and the determination of its atomic weight by Marie Curie followed by her long-term program for accumulating pure radium salts are emphasized. The first woman with a full professorship at a French University, Marie Curie created and managed the Radium Institute.

Anion control over interpenetration and framework topology in coordination networks based on homoleptic six-connected scandium nodes.

Reaction of ScX3 (X=NO3-, CF3SO3-, ClO4-) with 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide (L) affords topologically distinct six-connected three-dimensional coordination frameworks, {[Sc(L)3](NO3)3}(infinity) (1), {[Sc(L)3](CF3)SO3)3(CH3OH)2.7(H2O)3}(infinity) (2), {[Sc(L)3](ClO4)3}(infinity) (3) and {[Sc(L)4(H2O)2](ClO4)3}(infinity) (4). Compounds 1, 2 and 3 are networks based on octahedrally co-ordinated ScO6 centres bound through six oxygen atoms from six separate N-oxide ligands L. Compounds 1 and 3 are doubly interpenetrated and have alpha-polonium-type structures of 4(12)6(3) topology based upon three intersecting (4,4) nets. The structure of 2 is unusual and shows parallel, co-planar layers of (4,4) nets connected in a criss-crossed fashion to afford a new 4(8)6(6)8 topology. In 4 only four ligands L bind to each Sc(III) centre with two additional water molecules bridging metal nodes. Significantly, the bridges formed by L do not sit in a plane and if connections through L are considered alone the resultant structure is a diamondoid array typically based upon a tetrahedral connecting node at Sc. Five interpenetrating diamondoid networks are observed that are cross-bridged by water molecules to form a single three-dimensional array of 4(8)6(7) topology. Compound 4 can also be viewed as incorporating two intersecting (4,4) grids based upon two ligands L and two bridging waters. Thus, variation of anion, solvent and conditions critically affects the structures of products formed, and the series of polymers reported herein illustrates how tectons based upon (4,4) grids can be combined and distorted to form non-NaCl topologies and even cross-bridged, multiply interpenetrated diamondoid materials. Both compounds 2 and 4 represent unusual examples of self-penetrated coordination frameworks.

Metal nuclearity modulated four-, six-, and eight-connected entangled frameworks based on mono-, bi-, and trimetallic cores as nodes.

To investigate the relationship between network connectivity and metal nuclearity, we designed and synthesized a series of three-dimensional (3D) entangled coordination frameworks based on different metal cores, namely [Zn(2)(bdc)(2)(L)(2)]2H(2)O (1), [Zn(bdc)(L)(0.5)] (2), [Zn(oba)(L)(0.5)] (3) and [Cd(3)(bdc)(3)(L)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (4) by self-assembly of d(10) metal salts with the flexible long-chain ligand 1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butane (L), and with the rigid and nonrigid aromatic dicarboxylate ligands 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) and 4,4'-oxybis(benzoate) (oba). Compound 1 exhibits a threefold interpenetrated diamondoid array typically based on a tetrahedral second building unit (SBU) at a single Zn center. Compound 2 adopts a threefold interpenetrated alpha-polonium-type network that is built from bimetallic cores as six-connected vertices. The structure of 3 also consists of dinuclear units; it comprises a novel (3,4)-connected threefold interpenetrated net with complex (4610)(46(2)10(3)) topology when single zinc centers act as four-connected nodes (or the alpha-Po topology if dinuclear units are considered as six-connected nodes). Compound 4, derived from a crosslinked fivefold interpenetrated diamond-like substructure, is an unusual example of a self-penetrating coordination framework displaying an unprecedented eight-connected 4(20)6(8) topology with trinuclear cadmium clusters as eight-connected nodes which, to our knowledge, not only defines a new topology for eight-connected coordination networks, but also represents the highest connected topology presently known for self-penetrating systems. Detailed structural comparison of these complexes indicates that the increase in metal nuclearity induces the progressive increase in the connectivities of the ultimate nets: that is, the metal nuclearity plays a significant role in tuning the connectivity of a specific network. The thermal and luminescent properties of these compounds are discussed.
