Office podiatry.

A knowledge of anatomy, coupled with an awareness of biomechanical factors such as shoes, hosiery and other environmental agents, provides sufficient expertise for treating the majority of foot ailments. Simple, easily constructed devices alleviate common problems such as corns, calluses and bursitis secondary to athletic activity. The podiatric manifestations of diabetes and peripheral vascular disease are effectively managed by regular foot care from the family physician.

Applications of biodegradable lactides and glycolides in podiatry.

A comprehensive review of the clinical applications and the properties of biodegradable lactide and glycolides is presented. Specific podiatric and other orthopaedic applications of polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, and their copolymers are reviewed also. The authors then discuss numerous biocompatibility studies, basic manufacturing techniques, sterilizations/storage of the polymers, and the development of biodegradable polymers.

Various types of orthoses used in podiatry.

Deciding which orthosis would be best suited for a given patient is a complex process involving many different factors. The fancy names used by laboratories to describe their products only add to the confusion when the practitioner is attempting to determine the best device. The ability to successfully manage biomechanical abnormalities may be enhanced by understanding the properties of different orthotic materials and the associated patient factors involved. The podiatric practitioner also should be aware that the grade and quality of materials are not the same from different manufacturers, and that the way laboratories handle the materials also affects the final properties of the orthosis. For this reason, it is beneficial to sample orthoses from various laboratories, and to feel comfortable in asking for technical assistance when ordering.

Neurologic differential diagnosis in podiatry.

This article is an overview of a variety of neurologic disorders that a podiatrist may encounter. Obviously, the topic is broad. A method of forming a differential diagnosis is attempted, rather than generating a list of disorders. To make a diagnosis, neurologists identify the affected area of the nervous system, then generate a differential diagnosis of the disorders that cause disease in that location. The reader is referred to general neurology textbooks for further details. A brief review of the anatomy of the nervous system clarifies the origin of neurologic symptoms. Common neurologic symptoms and signs are discussed. The presentation of diseases that occur in specific systems, including lesions of the muscle, neuromuscular junction, nerve, plexus, nerve roots, anterior horn cells, spinal cord, and brain, are also described.
