Moyamoya syndrome after radiation therapy for optic pathway glioma: case report.

We present a 4-year-old girl with neurofibromatosis-1 who developed moyamoya syndrome characterized by bilateral stenosis or occlusion of the distal internal carotid arteries and their branches, leading to the development of an abnormal vascular network. In light of a literature review, the postradiation vasculopathy of the moyamoya type and its relationship with neurofibromatosis-1 are discussed.

Subclinical optic neuropathy in multiple sclerosis. How early VER components reflect axon loss and conduction defects in optic pathways.

The pathological effect of multiple sclerosis in the visual pathways consists of axonal demyelination and axonal loss. These two consequences of the disease, even in its subclinical stages, are reflected in changes in the initial component of the visual evoked response (VER) affecting its latency, configuration, or both. These abnormal early components of the VER were recorded in 25 patients with multiple sclerosis, only 10 of whom had any indication of visual involvement that could be documented historically or by conventional ophthalmic investigation.

Optic pathway conduction in insulin-dependent diabetics.

Abnormal latency delay of pattern-reversal visual evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) has been demonstrated in insulin-dependent diabetics without retinopathy as a sign of subclinical damage. Pattern-reversal VECPs and onset-offset (on-off) VECPs probably originated at different cortical levels. On-off latencies of a group of 50 insulin-dependent diabetics without retinopathy or neuropathy and with normal oscillatory potentials have been studied in relation to various clinical and metabolic parameters. The results of our study showed that on-off VECPs have in diabetes the same latency alterations as pattern-reversal VECPs, if to a lesser extent. This finding can be a useful index in the evaluation of patients at risk.

Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor evolving from an optic pathway ganglioglioma: case study.

We report an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor arising in a ganglioglioma from an 11-year-old male who had been treated over a nine-year period. A combined histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic analysis confirmed this diagnosis. Molecular genetic studies demonstrated a mutation in exon 9 of the INI1 gene in the tumor, which was not present in the patient's blood. This report is the first to describe progression of a ganglioglioma to atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor.
