[On the most ancient of the "Brenet medals"].

The founding of the Schools of Pharmacy was celebrated in the Year XII by the issuing of fifty silver medals engraved by Brenet and intended for these schools. Only two of them have since been located. But, the "Brenet medals" have also served as prizes in competitions in the School of Pharmacy of Paris since the Year XII and for the Pharmaceutical Society. The autor is in possession of one, also bestowed in the Year XII, but for a "Second Prize in Botany" in Rouen, a city which was at that time without an official teaching institution in medicine or pharmacy. Its recipient was probably a medical student taking courses organized in the Hotel-Dieu of Rouen.

[Tokens of deans of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris which evoke pharmaceutical recollections].

Three deans of the former Faculty of Medicine of Paris had tokens minted which referred to apothecaries: E.-F. Geoffroy, master apothecary of Paris before becoming a doctor of medicine; H.-T. Baron, senior, who succeeded in publishing the Paris Pharmacopoeia of 1732; P.-J.-B. Chomel, who cultivated "everyday plants", the object of his work, on land on the rue de l'Arbalète close by the "Jardin des Apothicaires". The author explains and reproduces the tokens.

[The Cheiron emblem and Cheiron medal of the World Association for the History of Veterinary Medicine].

In 1964 the first symposium on history of veterinary medicine was organised in Hanover by the section "History of Veterinary Medicine" of the German Society of Veterinary Medicine. During the 6th symposium in Hanover the World Association for the History of Veterinary Medicine (WAHVM) was created. In the following years further symposiums, called later on congresses took place almost every year. In 2001 the 32nd congress will be held. The Association gave herself in 1973 a distinguishing mark, the Cheiron Emblem. Sixteen years later, the Cheiron Medal was endowed to allow the World Association to express thanks and acknowledgement for special achievements in the field of history of veterinary medicine. The Cheiron Medal was bestowed for the first time on May 26th, 1989.

The esophageal coin: is it a penny?

Because of their high zinc content modern U.S. pennies that become lodged in the esophagus may react with stomach acid thereby damaging the esophageal mucosa. Management of esophageal pennies may therefore differ from that of other esophageal coins making differentiation of pennies from other coins important. We reviewed the records of 111 children who underwent endoscopic esophageal coin removal over a 19-year period to determine the ability of history and size of esophageal coin images on posterior-anterior and lateral chest radiographs alone and in combination to differentiate esophageal pennies from other esophageal coins. History alone accurately identified 83 per cent of esophageal coins. Ranges of two standard deviations around mean image sizes were determined for each coin denominations. We determined the probability of an esophageal coin being a penny based on combinations of historical data and whether or not image sizes fell within the calculated range for a penny. When all data agree that a coin is or is not a penny they are nearly always correct. When there is disagreement among historical and image size data the probability that is a coin is a penny is strongly influenced by the size of the radiographic images.

Management of ingested foreign bodies in upper gastrointestinal tract: report on 170 patients.

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of foreign bodies (FB) is commonly encountered in gastrointestinal practice. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of data on endoscopic removal of FB in 170 patients (124 children) who were managed at a tertiary referral center over a six-year period. OUTCOME: Coins were the most common FB removed (n=134). Dentures (12), food boluses (19), sharp objects such as needles and pins (7), and certain unusual FB (12) made up the remainder. Esophagus was the most common site of FB lodgement (56%). Most patients with esophageal FB complained of FB sensation, dysphagia, odynophagia or chest pain. Gastric and duodenal FB produced no symptoms. FB could be successfully removed endoscopically in 166 patients (97.6%) without morbidity or mortality. Four patients required surgical removal of FB. Certain Innovative methods like loop basket, electrocautery and suction retrieval were used to remove some FB. CONCLUSION: Endoscopic removal of FB in the esophagus and stomach is safe but often requires the use of innovative techniques and accessories.
