A method is proposed for finding the dependence of mean multiplicities of secondaries on the nucleus-collision impact parameter from the data on the total interaction ensemble. The impact parameter has been shown to completely define the mean characteristics of an individual interaction event. A difference has been found between experimental results and the data calculated in terms of the cascade-evaporation model at impact-parameter values below 3 fm.
An experiment was performed to isolate the small atypical mitochondria produced during the irradiation of normal mitochondria with an He-Ne laser. Rat liver mitochondria were irradiated with a low-power continuous-wave He-Ne laser (energy dose, 5 J cm-2), followed by isolation using a sucrose gradient. In the irradiated sample, two bands were observed, one corresponding to normal mitochondria and the other to atypical mitochondria. Certain biochemical features of the mitochondria were investigated: mitochondrial enzyme activity and the presence of DNA and RNA were demonstrated. Hybridization experiments carried out with labelled mitochondrial probes, containing the genes for cytochrome oxidase subunit I and 12S rRNA, confirmed the mitochondrial nature of the isolated RNA.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of He-Ne laser irradiation (632.8 nm, 10 mW) on the induction of acrosome reaction and mortality in bull sperm cells in comparison with two important capacitation agents; calcium and heparin. Frozen-thawed bull sperm cells were washed in percoll gradient and suspended at a concentration of 1 x 10(6) ml-1 in sp-TALP medium, capacitated in the presence of 2 mM CaCl2, 10 micrograms ml-1 heparin, or irradiated at fluences from 2 to 16 J cm-2, and incubated for 0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes. At the end of the incubation period, the percentage of sperm that were acrosome-reacted and dead was determined. The results obtained indicated that laser irradiation at all fluences produced a significant increase (p < 0.001) in the percentage of sperm cells that were acrosome reacted, and a significant decrease (p < 0.001) in the percentage of dead sperm at 90 minutes of incubation in comparison to other capacitation agents and the control group. The percentage of sperm cells with acrosome reaction was increased with increasing fluences of laser irradiation and time of incubation. It is conclude that the application of He-Ne laser irradiation at fluences from 2 to 16 J cm-2 induced the acrosome reaction and decreased the sperm mortality percentage in vitro of bull sperm cells.

A study was made of tissues from 130 pocket mice after a single head-only exposure to high-LET 20Ne particle radiation at 1000, 100 or 10 rad (nominal surface dose) with the view of obtaining base"line data regarding the effectiveness of HZE (cosmic-ray) particles during spaceflight. First seen at 2-3 weeks after exposure, necrotic neurons in the cerebrum reached peak incidence (0 . 04 per cent at 1000 rad, 0 . 003 per cent at 100 rad and less than 0 . 0005 per cent at 10 rad) after 4-5 weeks and decreased to low levels thereafter. Incidence in the cerebellum was lower. Neuroglia, cells of the subependymal matrix and dentate gyrus precursor cells suffered acute damage at 1000 and at 100 rad. At 1000 rad, enlarged hyperchromatic neuroglia, first noted at 3 weeks, increased in number up to 7 months, then declined. Alterations in the retina and olfactory epithelium were seen at 1000 rad, and reaction in the scalp at 100 rad. Damage was incurred by dentinoblasts at 10 rad. Changes similar to those observed in pocket mice were found in the brains of gerbils and C57B1 mice.
