Guidelines for evaluating department managers.

A format is suggested for administrators' difficult, important task of evaluating hospital department managers' relationships within the department and with other departments and personnel; official relationships with personnel outside the hospital; creativity and initiative; dependability; level of supervision required; sense of loyalty and understanding of the hospital's interest; and performance as outlined in the job description.

Correlating nursing care, nursing practice, and nursing performance standards.

All too often nursing standards have been viewed as a cumbersome paperwork task with little day-to-day practical relevance. Using a matrix approach that incorporates nursing role functions and the nursing process, the authors developed a model that provides the basis for job descriptions, performance appraisals, peer review, and quality management activities.

Employee Performance Appraisal↗

Employment of physical therapist assistants in a residential state school.

Development of a job description for physical therapist assistants in a residential center serving persons with developmental disabilities is presented. Academic preparation and ethical guidelines for the assistant were reviewed to determine appropriate job responsibilities. Assistants had sufficient academic preparation in modalities and bronchial drainage to function effectively and partial academic preparation in other areas related to treating developmental disabilities. Substantial on-the-job training was necessary for the assistant to perform specific tasks competently. Need for additional training was not considered a deterrent to hiring the assistant.

The BMET (biomedical equipment technician) career: academic curricula, hospital needs, & employee perceptions.

Research conducted over a two-year (1988-1989) period compared the concepts of job performance of Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs) with the job descriptions and academic requirements of healthcare organizations and the current academic curricula used to teach biomedical equipment technology. This study indicated that, while the BMETs and healthcare organizations held similar views of job performance requirements, there was disparity concerning the BMET's academic requirements as viewed by healthcare organizations when compared to the BMET's perception of academic preparedness. There was an even greater disparity between those perceptions and requirements when compared to the academic programs currently in place.

The training and role of the surgeon in the intensive care unit.

The central question for surgeons is whether the patient in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) is better served by a surgeon or a nonsurgeon as the responsible physician and as administrator of the SICU. This article explores the challenge of the SICU and the need for solutions, reviews the qualifications of the consultant in surgical critical care, and provides a job description of the director of an SICU.

Developing the trauma nurse case manager role.

The case manager serves as the coordinator of all care for a specific caseload of patients throughout an episode of illness. This role includes management, clinical, consultation, education, and research roles. Case management is especially important to implement for trauma patients who otherwise have wide variations in outcomes because of the trauma and concomitant social problems. This author describes how the case management role can be implemented, includes a sample job description of the multiple-responsibilities, and provides a case study demonstrating the case manager's role.

Developing new nurse leaders.

This innovative program was an easily administered and cost-effective method to identify and develop new nurse leaders. Successful features of the program were (a) the tenure in the ACNM's traineeship position was limited to 1 year, (b) the salary expense was just over $1,000 per ACNM per year, [c] the ACNMs were protected from publicity and visibility while they learned, and (d) potential nurse leaders were identified. After selling the idea to the hospital and nursing management, the only major effort needed to begin the program was the development of the ACNM job description and the selection of candidates. The rewards far outweighed the initial effort.

The clinical equipment coordinator: a new role in the hospital industry.

The increase in use, complexity, and cost of medical equipment requires a management response in both large and small hospitals. This paper describes the position of Clinical Equipment Coordinator (CEC) as it developed at Anaheim Memorial Hospital in Anaheim, California. The CEC can be highly effective in coordinating contract or shared services for a small hospital. In the larger hospital with an in-hospital Clinical or Biomedical Engineering Department, the CEC can take on the responsibilities of coordinating the services of the department. A detailed Job Description is presented along with typical forms and guidelines.

Supererogation and altruism: a comment.

Supererogation can be distinguished from altruism, in that the former is located in the category of duty but exceeds the strict requirements of duty, whereas altruism belongs to a different moral category from duty. It follows that doctors do not act altruistically in their professional roles. Individual doctors may sometimes show supererogation, but supererogation is not a necessary feature of the medical profession. The aim of medicine is to act in the best interests of patients. This aim involves neither supererogation nor even the moral quality of beneficence. It is simply a job description. Morality enters medicine through the quality of the individual doctor's work, not by the definition of that work.

An instrument for measuring differentiated nursing practice.

Newman's trilevel model of professional nursing practice specifies the roles of staff nurse, team leader and clinician/case manager. Essential elements of the roles are time and place orientation, assignment of clients, nursing observation and communication and nursing interventions. A pilot study to establish validity, clarity and fit of items was administered to three groups of nurses to fit the trilevel model categories through assessment of their job descriptions. Percentage of response indicated the instrument's ability to differentiate the roles.

Designing primary health care teams for developing countries.

A time-honored industrial engineering technique, job evaluation, which was developed to set rates for manual labor, was used in the design of new teams for delivering primary health care in Latin America. The technique was used both in writing job descriptions for new allied health personnel and in designing the curriculums needed to train the personnel.

Development of a criteria-based performance appraisal for emergency department staff nurses.

Developing a criteria-based performance appraisal tool is a rewarding effort, but not one to be taken lightly. It took weeks. At times, the project loomed as "mission impossible." A reflection of its success is the fact that other ED staff members (e.g., charge nurses, clerks, triageurs, and lab assistants) now want criteria-based performance appraisals for their positions. We have just finished a job description and criteria-based appraisal for laboratory assistants.

Roles, responsibilities, and outcome expectations of endowed chairs in nursing.

This study, using a modified Delphi approach, examines the purpose, roles, responsibilities, and outcomes of endowed chairholders in nursing. Deans and faculty who hold endowed chairs participated in this 3-phased study. While the ranking of importance varied between these 2 groups of experts, common themes emerged relative to the phenomenon under investigation. Findings from this preliminary work can be used by deans and chairholders to develop job descriptions and evaluate the impact of endowments in a program of nursing.

Designing a program for ophthalmic registered nurse first assistants.

Insurance companies eliminated payment for physician first assistants in cataract surgery. Community hospitals are responding to this situation by utilizing perioperative nurses and certified surgical technicians. The credentialing process is largely relegated to each hospital. The ophthalmic nurse is now quite pivotal in writing the policies and procedures. Also inherent in this expanded role is the development of preceptor training, job description and performance appraisals. This serves as a primer to specifically address these problems in a community hospital operating room.
