Extraurinary schistosomiasis in Southern Iraq.

Ninety-six cases of extraurinary schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma haematobium were encountered in a retrospective histopathological study of cases encountered over a period of 12 years in Southern Iraq. Seventy-six cases involved three main systems, namely the female genital system (29 cases), male genital system (15 cases) and the lower intestinal tract (32 cases). In the remaining 20 cases unusual sites such as lymph nodes, skin, liver and lungs were affected. In none of these cases did the clinician initially consider schistosomiasis to be the cause of the patient's illness prior to the histological diagnosis.

Two new species of Philometra (Nematoda: Philometridae) from needlefishes (Belonidae) in Iraq, with a key to Philometra spp. parasitic in the host's subcutaneous tissue, fins and musculature.

Two new nematode species, Philometra strongylurae sp. n. and Philometra tylosuri sp. n., are described from female specimens collected from needlefishes (Belonidae, Beloniformes) off the Fao coast, Basrah, Persian Gulf, in Iraq. Philometra strongylurae (gravid females with larvae) was recorded from the subcutaneous tissue, muscles of beak and gills of Strongylura leiura (type host) and S. strongylura, whereas P. tylosuri (nongravid females) from the musculature and the subcutaneous tissue of Tylosurus crocodilus. The former is characterized mainly by the presence of eight markedly large cephalic papillae, conspicuously large anterior oesophageal bulb and by the length of body (15-20 mm); the latter by eight minute cephalic papillae, poorly developed oesophageal bulb and by the body length (46-72 mm). A key to Philometra spp. with gravid females parasitic in the subcutaneous tissue, fins or musculature of fishes is provided.

Hepatitis B surface antigen in various liver diseases in Iraq.

In a series of 221 patients with various liver diseases studied in Iraq using counterimmunoelectrophoresis and passive haemagglutination techniques, HBsAg was detected in 40.8 per cent of cases with acute viral hepatitis, in 40 per cent in cryptogenic cirrhosis, in 50 per cent in chronic hepatitis, in 100 per cent in active cirrhosis and 71.4 per cent in hepatoma. In acute hepatitis the antigenaemia was highest early in the course of the disease. The duration of antigenaemia ranged from three to 16 weeks. In 3.4 per cent of cases the antigenaemia persisted for more than 35 weeks. In 31.3 per cent of acute hepatitis there was no evidence of parenteral infection.
