Mothers' perceptions of incest: sustained disruption and turmoil.

Eleven mothers whose daughters had allegedly been sexually abused by the father or father figure were interviewed to evaluate their perceptions of the sexual abuse. Subjects were obtained from a caseload of a county Department of Family and Child Protective Services. Ages ranged from 5 to 17 years and both black and white children were represented. Content analysis was used to analyze the data and revealed that the mothers in the sample continued to experience turmoil in their lives long after disclosure of the abuse occurred. These mothers were unable to consistently protect their daughters or reconstruct their family lives after the incest was disclosed.

Freud, psychodynamics, and incest.

The author distills the essence of Freud's thinking about incest, placing it within the context of childhood sexuality. He discusses clinical and research implications concerning the relationship between sexual trauma and emotional disturbances, and poses certain perplexing questions that are far from answered.

[Demographic consequences of genetic load: a model of the origin of the incest taboo].

The prohibition of copulations among near relatives may raise the fitness of population. This effect being irregular and insignificant for a distinct generation, becomes apparent in evolutionary time intervals through the natural selection of populations with incest-taboo. The "characteristic selection time" theta depends on typical population size, genetic damage and the mean rate of population growth. The estimation obtained for theta permit us to assert that the model describes the phenomenon of "socio-cultural selection" in prehistory. The model shows the demographic specificity of small populations. The problem of the number of consanguineous marriages is considered in detail. New explanation for deviation of the observed frequency of consanguineous marriages from classical estimations is proposed.

Suffering in silence: the male incest victim.

The reasons boys who are victims of incest remain silent are explored in terms of the special meaning of victimization to males. A major factor is that society does not permit males to express feelings of helplessness and vulnerability.

Fact and fantasy in the history of Freud's views on incest and seduction.

This article surveys the history of Freud's attitudes and theories about the etiologic role of actual incest and seduction and neurosis. It also surveys the debate in historical writing on that topic, much of which oversimplifies complex and contradictory data. Here is an instance in which history is being written and used as part of current debates and polemics, principally to either monolithically defend or attack Freud. This article argues that Freud's motives for downplaying the etiologic role of seduction in the neuroses were complex, did not involve cowardice, and need to be understood both in terms of internal developments in Freud's thinking as well as in terms of relevant external (for example, historical) factors.

[Incest: murder of the identity].

The author begins by describing incest in the context of a change in attitude toward it and a substantial increase in forensic referral. This is followed by the description of the psychological profile of abusing fathers and how the traumatic experience severly shatters the sense of identity in the victims. Some clinical examples illustrate the role of negative hallucination, basic violence and the phenomenon of the double. The author also approaches the mental functioning of the abusers through the angle of perversion and attempts to define some necessary therapeutic conditions.

Idiopathic fetal ascites associated with pregnancy from father-daughter incest. A case report.

A 15-year-old primigravida registered late for antenatal care (23 weeks). Ultrasound examination revealed massive idiopathic fetal ascites necessitating in utero paracentesis at 27 weeks. The family was socially dislocated, and the patient's alcoholic father doted on her. A live female fetus with ascites and multiple congenital abnormalities was delivered at 34 weeks. Following repeated hospitalization, the infant died of pneumonitis, at 5 months of age; autopsy could not determine the cause of the ascites. Young pregnant teenagers from broken homes with doting behavior from an alcoholic father should be suspected of being incest victims.

[Incest offenders].

BACKGROUND: Always raising attention has been devoted to sexual victimization of the juveniles and to its consequences lately. This report was aimed for learning frequency of the phenomenon in our country. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-two men (mean age 22-45 years, mean year 37), are accused of sexual victimization of their step-daughters were examined. Contrary to other groups of sexual delinquents, their mean intellect was slightly above average, their sexual development was accelerated, sexual activity elevated. Three quarters of them were already previously prosecuted. Attention is drawn to the necessity to the evaluate "incestogenic families as a whole. In all instance it is necessary to make a considerate but detailed somatic and psychiatric examination of the victim with documentation which can be used also for criminal proceedings and psychiatric and sexuological assessment of the accused, incl. phallography. Accusations which indicate always grossly pathological relations are not necessarily always true. CONCLUSIONS: Incest and sexual victimization of children seem to be a little fashionable but even so a major affair we will probably face more frequently in next years.

On the occurrence of incest fantasies.

Incest fantasies are often regarded as suggesting important ego or superego deficits. Actually, some nonpsychotic patients are found to experience such fantasies. In these cases the phenomenon occurs when certain psychogenetic and psychodynamic factors are present.

Ethical aspects of competence for sexual relationships: a case of adult sibling incest.

A case of adult sibling incest serves as the occasion to review relevant literature and discuss issues related to competence to consent to sexual relations between adults. The case was presented at ethics rounds at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center (Boston, MA), and the resulting discussion is analyzed as to the decision making with which the treatment team is faced. The relationships among competence and competence assessment, autonomy, morality, and countertransference issues are also considered in this provocative case.

[The problems in dealing with the incest experiences of borderline patients].

Sexual and/or physical abuse can be found in large numbers in the history of severely disturbed borderline patients. The treatment of experiences of incest can induce new symptoms as well as reinforce still existing symptoms. Thus the free-floating anxiety, which is connected with the anxiety of impending doom in early childhood, can be reduced. During in-patient treatment the extent of free-floating anxiety of borderline patients can be reduced by the holding function of the therapeutic team. Reduction of the other symptoms can take place only subsequent to this. A therapy geared to the reduction of singular symptoms might be less successful.

Sibling incest: treatment of the family and the offender.

Sibling incest takes place in the context of a family system that does not provide a safe environment for its members. Treatment should encompass all pertinent aspects of the family system and the roles of all the family members within it, and intact boundaries must be created. Hierarchical realignment diminishes enmeshed subsystems and produces more open, honest communication in the family. The offender must take responsibility for his or her behavior. This stance should be supported by the parents. All family members should adhere to a safety plan throughout the treatment process.

Chronicle of an incest foretold.

In this paper the author discusses the situation of children handed over to grandparents or to other relatives of the natural parents to be brought up. She notes that such children are faced with the riddle of their own filiation and postulates that this scenario often conceals an oedipal fantasy to the effect that the child concerned is the fruit of an incestuous relationship between a grandparent and the relevant parent. Following the example of Freud, the author adduces literary models for illustration. As with the Oedipus of Sophocles, the author shows how efforts to thwart the workings of fate actually bring about the consummation of the tragedy in the form of incest, which is favoured by the confused oedipal configuration in the families of handed-over children. The main argument is based on the characters and situations of two novels by Gabriel García Márquez, written at different times in his life. With reference to the psychoanalytic literature on artistic creativity, the author shows the importance of the mid-life crisis in determining how García Márquez came to terms with the fact of having himself been entrusted to grandparents as a child and how this situation is reflected in the works concerned.

Fibrillar collagen: the key to vertebrate evolution? A tale of molecular incest.

Fibril-forming (fibrillar) collagens are extracellular matrix proteins conserved in all multicellular animals. Vertebrate members of the fibrillar collagen family are essential for the formation of bone and teeth, tissues that characterise vertebrates. The potential role played by fibrillar collagens in vertebrate evolution has not been considered previously largely because the family has been around since the sponge and it was unclear precisely how and when those particular members now found in vertebrates first arose. We present evidence that the classical vertebrate fibrillar collagens share a single common ancestor that arose at the very dawn of the vertebrate world and prior to the associated genome duplication events. Furthermore, we present a model, 'molecular incest', that not only accounts for the characteristics of the modern day vertebrate fibrillar collagen family but demonstrates the specific effects genome or gene duplications may have on the evolution of multimeric proteins in general.

Evolution of MHC genetic diversity: a tale of incest, pestilence and sexual preference.

Evidence from the house mouse (Mus) suggests that the extreme diversity of genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) results from three different forms of selection involving infectious disease (pestilence), inbreeding (incest) and MHC-based mating (sexual) preferences. MHC-based disassortative mating preferences are presumed to have evolved because they reduce homozygosity throughout the genome, and particularly within loci linked to the MHC. Progeny derived from such disassortative matings would enjoy increased fitness because of both reduced levels of inbreeding depression and increased resistance to infectious disease arising from their increased MHC heterozygosity.

Early separation and sibling incest. A test of the revised Westermarck theory.

This was a follow-up study of earlier reported findings by the present investigators suggesting, albeit equivocally, that separation during early childhood inhibited later sexual acts of a potentially procreative nature between siblings but did not deter other sexual activity. The present study surveyed 170 subjects, mostly in the Toronto area, by telephone and mail. Respondents reporting potentially procreative, postchildhood sexual acts (attempted or completed genital intercourse) with siblings were compared with those reporting sexual relationships excluding procreative acts, and a third sample reporting no postchildhood sibling sexual behavior. Consonant with expectations from the earlier study, prolonged separation during early childhood was associated with procreative postchildhood sexual activity but not with other postchildhood sexual activity. Contrary to predictions, however, both sexual activity groups reported significantly more nudity and physical contact with siblings during childhood than subjects reporting no sexual activity. The findings are discussed in terms of a revised version of the Westermarck hypothesis, which is consistent with a domain-specific approach to evolved incest avoidance mechanisms.

Shared parentage and incest avoidance in the cooperatively breeding acorn woodpecker.

Social groups of acorn woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus) range in size from unaided pairs to 15 adults. Behavioural indicators of mate guarding, assumed incest avoidance and observations of egg-laying indicate that social organization ranges from monogamous pairs to groups with up to seven male and three female putative cobreeders plus up to 10 nonbreeding helpers. In addition, groups occasionally lack a putative breeder throughout the breeding season. Here we report results from multilocus DNA fingerprinting of 372 nestlings from 123 nests in groups with putative cobreeders of one or both sexes. No extra-group fertilizations were found. Putative cobreeding males within social groups shared paternity. However, the most reproductively successful male was, on average, almost three times as successful as the next most successful and additional males only occasionally sired offspring. In contrast, cobreeding females shared parentage equally. Helpers never bred incestuously when their opposite-sex parent (or another relative, such as their uncle) held breeding status in the group. However, during breeding male vacancies, 14 nestlings were produced when helper males bred incestuously with their mother. Both male and female helpers usually became successful cobreeders with their same-sex parent following replacement of the opposite-sex breeder(s) by unrelated individuals.
