Hospital renovation projects: phased construction requires planning at its best.

Building a new hospital facility is a difficult task, but adding onto and renovating an existing structure while normal activity continues is even more difficult. Project planners, designers, contractors, and hospital managers must carefully program the joint effort of construction and hospital operation. Several factors in the construction process and potential problems for hospital operations are described to help hospital managers better anticipate difficulties before plans are finalized and construction commences.

Successful internal program builds employee morale; reduces turnover. Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.

The Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. is an example of what good can happen when a health care institution commits to developing a first-class internal communications program. The hospital center created a program that includes one-on-one dialogue between supervisors and staff, "town hall meetings, newsletters, memos, intranet, employee recognition and special events." The program builds employee morale and reduces turnover. It also has increased the quality of care and attention that patients receive.

'No secrets' approach pays off in satisfaction.

Health care organizations can encourage the free flow of information by making internal communications a high-priority, strategic function. A "no secrets" policy is a prime indicator of organizations that are doing an exemplary job of internal communications. Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, FL, provides a demonstration of best practices in internal communications within a health care organization.

Notification of real-time clinical alerts generated by pharmacy expert systems.

We developed and implemented a strategy for notifying clinical pharmacists of alerts generated in real-time by two pharmacy expert systems: one for drug dosing and the other for adverse drug event prevention. Display pagers were selected as the preferred notification method and a concise, yet readable, format for displaying alert data was developed. This combination of real-time alert generation and notification via display pagers was shown to be efficient and effective in a 30-day trial.
