[Dermatomycoses in miners of the "Anna" mine].

100 miners have been examined for mycosis pedis. All had interdigital macerations, mainly of both feet. 57 cultures of fungi were positive. Blastomyces and especially Candida albicans were the most frequent fungi. Some remarks are made concerning individual hygiene and surface disinfection.

[Allergic phenomena in the course of dermatomycoses].

Fungi, well known as infectious factors so far, are important allergens too. A fungal id reaction is defined as a distant skin manifestation of an established fungal infection. The most typical setting is in association with tinea of the feet. The main id reactions are well established. A widespread lichen trichophyticus--eruption of small follicular papules grouped or diffuse. The eruption is symmetrical, usually pronounced on the trunk but in severe cases extending down to the lower limbs, even sometimes involving the face. The common cause of this type of id reaction is scalp ringworm of kerion type, caused typically by Trichophyton verrucosum. The treatment of the original ringworm lesion may play a role in initiation of the process. A pompholyx-like id affecting the interdigital spaces and palmar surfaces of the fingers, the palms and sometimes the dorsal surfaces of the hands. This eruption is associated with an acute inflammatory tinea of the feet and may develop spontaneously or as a result of inappropriate treatment. The palmar and web space skin may be covered with papules or vesicles. Sometimes blisters or pustules may occur. Other varieties of mycides include eczematous eruptions, erysipelas-like dermatitis, psoriasiform dermatitis, erythema multiforme, erythema annulare centrifugum, erythema nodosum, and urticaria. Adequate antifungal therapy is recommended as the treatment of allergic diseases caused by superficial fungi.

[Synopsis of invasive dermatomycoses in immunocompromised host].

The immune system plays a prominent role in the defense against a wide variety of pathogen fungi. Thus, the immunocompromised patient becomes a potential victim of mycoses originating from the skin. These mycoses may become invasive and a fatal issue is possible. In other circumstances, the inoculation site is pulmonary or digestive, and the cutaneous lesions represent secondary localizations.

[In vitro antifungal activity of itraconazole, a new triazole antifungal agent, against clinical isolates from patients with dermatomycoses].

In vitro antifungal activities of itraconazole (ITZ), a triazole antifungal agent, against clinical isolates obtained from patients with superficial and subcutaneous mycoses were examined using the agar dilution method on casitone agar. The clinical isolates tested were 7 species and 263 isolates including Trichophyton mentagrophytes (104 isolates), Trichophyton rubrum (103 isolates), Microsporum canis (3 isolates), Epidermophyton floccosum (2 isolates), Candida albicans (32 isolates), Malassezia furfur (7 isolates) and Sporothrix schenckii (12 isolates). The results are summarized as follows: 1. MIC values of ITZ for the isolates of dermatophytes and M. furfur distributed in a range of less than 0.0012-5 micrograms/ml indicating that ITZ had greater in vitro activities. These in vitro activities of ITZ were greater than those of clotrimazole or bifonazole. 2. C. albicans isolates were divided into 2 groups in terms of ITZ-susceptibilities, a high susceptibility group and low-susceptibility group with MIC values of 0.02-0.08 micrograms/ml and greater than 10 micrograms/ml, respectively. 3. The in vitro activities of ITZ against S. schenckii isolates with a geometric mean MIC of 0.119 micrograms/ml were greater than those of ketoconazole, miconazole or amphotericin B used as reference drugs.

[Dermatomycoses as occupational diseases. The causative agents, sources of infection and the involved occupations].

Fungal diseases of the skin can be occupational dermatoses. This applies in particular to diseases due to microorganisms acquired from animals. A discussion of the relationship between occupation and disease, however, is not only pertinent in regards to dermatophytoses due to zoophilic fungi but also with those due to geophilic and--to a certain extent--even anthropophilic ones. The same is true of candidiasis. The present review deals with the various standpoints concerning the role of occupation in the development of cutaneous mycoses. In addition casuistic evidence for the various types disease, is compiled and discussed.

[Fluconazole in the treatment of dermatomycoses. Clinical experience].

Twenty patients suffering from dermatomycosis have been treated with fluconazole at the dose of 50 mg/daily for 20 days. These patients (10 M + 10 F) were aged 36 years on average (range 17-65 years). And were suffering from the following: Tinea pedis (3 cases), Tinea cruris (1 case), Tinea corporis (9 cases), Tinea versicolor (3 cases), Candidiasis (5 cases). One patient was suffering from Tinea on two different body sites. 19 patients finished the treatment and reported a complete clinical and mycological healing either at the end of the therapy on at follow-up visits. One patient, who was already suffering from gastritis, had to interrupt the therapy early due to abdominal pain. General safety was excellent.

[Atypical dermatomycoses in children as seen in personal observations].

15 cases of cutaneous fungal infection in children with nontypical clinical findings have been presented. The fungal infections simulated other skin diseases particularly atopic dermatitis in 6 cases, diaper dermatitis in 4 cases and in single cases psoriasis, impetigo, purpura, eczema and exudative multiforme erythema. Mycotic examinations have confirmed the fungal character of lesions. The specific treatment resulted in the complete cure of the skin lesions.

[Diagnosis of dermatomycoses using the sellotape-KOH method].

In a group of 84 adult male workers in an industrial plant, who used a common shower room, the applicability of the adhesive tape-KOH technique for routine mycologic examination was investigated. The tape technique was compared with the conventional cover slip technique in interdigital and plantar lesions. The tape technique gave more frequent positive results than the cover slip technique (74% and 57% respectively). However, examination of the tapes was more difficult than that of the cover slips. The latter method therefore appears more appropriate for routine microscopical mycologic examination.
