This study investigated information-seeking behavior, including use of major bibliographic tools by medical, pharmacy, nursing, and science faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The study assessed the impact of availability of locally mounted databases, determined needs for modification of instructional programs, identified the need for promotional material, and established a baseline for subsequent studies. Results reflected a wide variation in the number and format of secondary services used by faculty. Over 70% of all faculty from the colleges of medicine, pharmacy, and nursing used Index Medicus or MEDLINE. There were statistically significant differences between colleges in their use of mediated and end-user searching of MEDLINE. Colleges exhibited significant differences in use of Current Contents, PsycLIT, ERIC, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Chemical Abstracts, and Science Citation Index. Statistically significant differences also were found among several clinical departments. The study concluded that, as new formats to bibliographic tools become available, traditional formats continue to be used; training sessions must be tailored to the audience; and the availability of local resources and their use by faculty needs to be understood.
This article reviews, for authors publishing in the Chinese literature, the characteristics of MEDLINE users, the format of MEDLINE citations and the main retrieval strategies used with the system. References were retrieved and data collected through MEDLINE searches of the database 1988-June 1992. Thirty-six indexed journals from the People's Republic of China (PRC) were analyzed. The items of a MEDLINE citation are described. Titles of Chinese journals are listed in English as well as Chinese in the annual "List of Serials Indexed" of Index Medicus. Articles from journals in the PRC are indexed at the China MEDLARS Center, Beijing, PRC. For the 36 journals analyzed, 12,530 citations appeared in MEDLINE during the search period. Basic search strategies are described. Users doing author searches may have difficulties with common Chinese surnames, especially if only one given name initial is used. Journal searches of specialty journals, as well as address field searches for publications from a particular institution, may be helpful to scientists planning a visit to China. Effective use of MEDLINE has become an opportunity and responsibility for scientists and physicians over the world. Suggestions for preparation of English titles and abstracts to assure optimal information transfer and retrieval efficiency are: think about your audience; do not waste words; include key features in the title; be consistent with names and affiliations; use MeSH terms; include important non-MeSH terms in text; use structured abstracts; and obtain MEDLINE printouts of your own citations.

The Poisons Information Centre (PIC) provides viral and timely information to prevent and manage poisoning episodes. Comprehensive information on household, agricultural and industrial chemicals, natural toxins, pharmaceuticals, local antidote stocks and local poisons experts is retrieved from the Centre's computerised information system and printed literature. Public subscribers can obtain poisons information through Teleview.

In August 1994, the CD PLUS/Ovid literature retrieval system based on UNIX was activated for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. There were up to 1,200 potential users. Tests were carried out to determine the extent to which searching for literature was affected by other end users of the system. In the tests, search times and download times were measured in relation to a varying number of continuously active workstations. Results indicated a linear relationship between search times and the number of active workstations. In the "worst case" situation with sixteen active workstations, the time required for record retrieval increased by a factor of sixteen and downloading time by a factor of sixteen over the "best case" of no other active stations. However, because the worst case seldom, if ever, happens in real life, these results are considered acceptable.
As new nursing roles emerge that involve greater decision making than in the past, added responsibility for outcomes and cost control, and increased emphasis on primary care, the information-seeking skills needed by nurses change. A search of library and nursing literature indicates that there is little comprehensive library instruction covering all levels of nursing programs: undergraduate, returning registered nurses, and graduate students. The University of Florida is one of the few places that has such a multilevel, course-integrated curriculum in place for all entrants into the nursing program. Objectives have been developed for each stage of learning. The courses include instruction in the use of the online public access catalog, printed resources, and electronic databases. A library classroom equipped with the latest technology enables student interaction with electronic databases. This paper discusses the program and several methods used to evaluate it.
The objective of this work was to compare diagnoses achieved through the traditional methods of current pathology practice versus diagnoses achieved through a selection of image on a telediagnostic TV-monitor. The Kappa coefficient between the two protocols of k = 0.26 SE(k) = 0.06 z = k/SE(k) = 4.3 (p < 0.001) allows us to conclude that there is a good reliability between video and glass slide diagnoses.
The analysis of CD Plus usage logs provides an opportunity to determine specific areas where searchers are "missing opportunities" by misusing, or failing to use, system specific features. This paper describes a methodology, based on transaction log analysis, to provide automated, continuous analysis of end-user searching. The data collected in this process can then be used to enhance and provide insight into the educational needs of users.
