Evaluation of oral health-related quality of life following pulp therapy or extraction in paediatric patients: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Treatment decision between pulp therapy and extraction for compromised teeth in paediatric patients remains a topic of debate. While both approaches address the associated pain, their long-term impact on children's well-being remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to analyse and compare the impact of pulp therapy and extraction on OHRQoL in paediatric patients. METHODS: This review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed in multiple electronic databases. Methodological quality and risk of bias were evaluated using the RoB 2 tool for randomised controlled trials, ROBINS-I tool for non-randomised trials, and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies. RESULTS: Seven studies comprising a total of 1367 participants met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that pulp therapy was associated with superior OHRQoL outcomes compared to extraction. Children who underwent pulp therapy reported lower anxiety, better emotional well-being, and higher parental satisfaction. Given the heterogeneity among the studies, a narrative synthesis was performed. CONCLUSION: Pulp therapy may offer better OHRQoL outcomes than extractions in paediatric patients by preserving function, reducing anxiety, and minimising long-term complications. However, these findings should be interpreted cautiously since the available evidence was limited and of low to very low certainty. Further well-designed randomised controlled trials are required.

The incidence and descriptive factors of calcaneal malunion after surgical fixation of intra-articular calcaneal fractures using the sinus tarsi approach: A retrospective cohort study with binary logistic regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the incidence of calcaneal malunion after minimally invasive sinus tarsi approach (MIS-STA) in displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures (I-ACFs) and identified related descriptive factors of calcaneal malunion. METHODS: A retrospective review of 99 displaced I-ACFs treated with MIS-STA was conducted. Demographic data, pre-operative radiographs, and operative details were analyzed. Outcomes included numerical rating scale (NRS) pain scores at rest and during activities of daily living (ADL), Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) for ADL and radiographic parameters. Logistic regression was used to identify descriptive factors associated with malunion. RESULTS: Malunion occurred in 33/99 cases (33.3%). The significant descriptive factors were the initial B&#xf6;hler angle <&#x202f;0.5 &#xb0;, time to surgery >&#x202f;12.5 days, and Sanders type &#x2265;&#x202f;III. Malunion patients had significantly worse NRS and FAAM scores (p&#x202f;&#x2264;&#x202f;0.001). CONCLUSION: Calcaneal malunion after MIS-STA occurred in one-third of cases, with three descriptive factors identified and poorer outcomes observed. Effects of Vacuum Compression Therapy on Healing of Chronic Lower Limb Ulcers: A Randomised Controlled Study.

Chronic lower limb ulcers remain difficult to manage when unresponsive to conventional treatment. This study evaluated the clinical and physiological effects of vacuum compression therapy on wound healing and quality of life. Fifty patients with chronic lower limb ulcers were randomised to receive 12 sessions of vacuum compression therapy plus standard care or standard care alone over 4&#x2009;weeks. Wound dimensions, exudate, pain intensity and quality of life were assessed at baseline and post-treatment. Estimated wound volume was calculated as length&#x2009;&#xd7;&#x2009;width&#x2009;&#xd7;&#x2009;depth. Tissue oxygenation was measured at the dorsum of the foot in the experimental group. The vacuum compression therapy group showed greater improvements in wound width, depth, volume and quality of life. Estimated wound volume decreased by 61% in the intervention group, whereas no statistically significant volume reduction was observed in controls. Local tissue oxygenation in the experimental group increased by 43%. Baseline wound size was associated with poorer quality of life. Vacuum compression therapy may enhance wound healing and quality of life in patients with chronic lower limb ulcers. Observed increases in local tissue oxygenation represent exploratory physiological findings within the treated cohort that warrant controlled comparative evaluation. Venomous Lepidoptera: defensive toxin systems, venom composition, and clinical significance.

Venomous Lepidoptera constitute an underrecognized yet medically significant group of toxin-producing arthropods that employ contact-mediated defensive envenomation through specialized integumentary structures such as setae, spines, and scoli. Unlike actively stinging arthropods, these insects deliver venom passively upon contact, eliciting a diverse spectrum of clinical manifestations collectively termed lepidopterism. Clinical outcomes range from localized pain and dermatitis to severe systemic effects, including hemorrhagic syndromes, complement activation, and chronic inflammatory disorders. Recent advances in proteomic and transcriptomic technologies have transformed our understanding of lepidopteran venoms, revealing unexpectedly complex toxin repertoires comprising serine proteases, phospholipases, pore-forming proteins, disulfide-rich peptides, neuroactive RF-amide peptides, and immune-modulating components. These findings have provided new insights into the molecular basis of toxicity, host-pathogen interactions, and the evolutionary diversification of venom systems within Lepidoptera. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the morphology of venom-delivery structures, venom composition, mechanisms of action, and associated clinical manifestations, while highlighting medically important taxa, particularly species of the genus Lonomia. The successful development of antivenom against Lonomia envenomation underscores the translational relevance of lepidopteran toxin research and its potential for therapeutic innovation. By integrating molecular, clinical, and evolutionary perspectives, this review repositions venomous Lepidoptera as a legitimate and important component of arthropod toxinology. Furthermore, it identifies critical methodological limitations and key knowledge gaps, providing a framework for future investigations aimed at advancing our understanding of toxin biology, immunopathology, and the development of novel biomedical applications.

The co-existence of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome: A systematic review of the literature.

There is a growing body of literature evaluating both postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). We conducted a systematic review to evaluate what is currently known about the co-existence of both conditions. A search of MEDLINE and EMBASE was performed in December 2025 and data were collected in tables and pooled to determine the prevalence of POTS in EDS and EDS in POTS. A total of 30 studies were included with 8421 patients with EDS and 12,983 patients with POTS. The average age across 16 studies that reported mean age was 33.3&#xa0;years. POTS in patients with EDS ranges from 17.5% to 92.7% depending on the population. EDS in patients with POTS ranges from 17.9% to 50.0% depending on the population. One study suggested that patients with EDS and POTS had greater medication use, pain medications and greater number of clinic visits compared to POTS alone while another suggests that these patients have greater gastrointestinal symptoms and the odds were greatest for postprandial distress syndrome, chronic nausea and vomiting syndrome, vomiting and post-prandial fullness. We conclude that EDS and POTS frequently co-occur, and proportions of patients with POTS and EDS depends on the population evaluated. Overall, more research is needed to better understand how to effectively manage patients living with both EDS and POTS.

Selective monitoring of trace-level catechin and myricetin in herbal and aqueous matrices using magnetic MIP-DSPME: Optimization via design of experiments.

A novel dispersive solid-phase microextraction approach utilizing a magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) integrated with HPLC-UV detection was developed for the concurrent quantification of catechin and myricetin in herbal extracts and aqueous samples. The sorbent was engineered as a core-shell nanocomposite, consisting of a selective polymer layer deposited onto Fe3O4@SiO2-APTMS magnetic nanoparticles. Dual-template imprinting using catechin and myricetin generated complementary binding cavities within the polymer framework. Experimental variables influencing extraction were systematically screened and subsequently optimized. A Plackett-Burman design was first applied to identify the most influential factors, with pH and sorption time identified as the dominant variables. These parameters were subsequently fine-tuned using a central composite design, and the optimization process was completed in only 30 experimental runs. The sorption characteristics of the imprinted sorbent (MMIP) were compared with those of its non-imprinted counterpart (MNIP). The MMIP demonstrated markedly higher maximum binding capacities (Qmax), reaching 119.3&#xa0;mg&#xa0;g-1 for myricetin and 112.1&#xa0;mg&#xa0;g-1 for catechin, whereas the corresponding values for the MNIP were 32.55 and 32.08&#xa0;mg&#xa0;g-1, respectively. Moreover, the affinity constants (KL&#xa0;=&#xa0;0.760-0.950&#xa0;L&#xa0;mg-1) were approximately 2.3-fold higher for the MMIP, confirming its stronger and more selective interactions with the target analytes. The selectivity coefficients for the targeted flavonoids relative to structurally related compounds, including ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, melatonin, and curcumin, exceeded 3.5 for the MMIP, whereas the corresponding values for the MNIP were close to 1.1, demonstrating the high molecular recognition capability of the imprinted sorbent. Method validation demonstrated limits of detection (LODs) of 0.33-0.59&#xa0;ng&#xa0;mL-1 and limits of quantification (LOQs) of 1.10-1.96&#xa0;ng&#xa0;mL-1, and excellent linearity over the concentration range of 5.0-5500&#xa0;ng&#xa0;mL-1 (R2&#xa0;>&#xa0;0.998). The method achieved recoveries of 93.96% to 105.69% with RSDs below 5.5%, while the preconcentration factors ranged from 209 to 229. Furthermore, the sorbent retained more than 95% of its extraction efficiency after four consecutive reuse cycles and more than 80% after six cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of six medicinal plant extracts and water samples, showing negligible matrix interference and superior sensitivity, selectivity, and operational simplicity compared with conventional solid-phase extraction methods.

Nurse-led acute care post-operative interventions in adult cardiac surgery: a systematic review.

AIMS: The primary aim of this systematic review was to identify nurse-led clinical interventions evaluated in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for adults who had undergone cardiac surgery. The secondary aim was to assess the effectiveness of these interventions on post-operative clinical and patient-reported outcomes during the acute inpatient phase. METHODS AND RESULTS: A systematic review was undertaken according to an a priori protocol using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and PRISMA guideline for reporting. Eligible studies were RCTs of adult (&#x2265;18 years) cardiac surgery, nurse-led inpatient interventions implemented immediately post-surgery and prior to discharge. Six databases were searched from inception to June 2025. Of 2690 records, 19 RCTs were eligible, representing 13 countries, and 3142 participants. Risk of bias varied, with only two low-risk trials. Interventions were grouped into seven domains: behavioural support; temperature management and comfort strategies; pain and symptom management; wound care; infection prevention; respiratory and pulmonary function; and post-operative recovery, mobilization, and hydration. Across these domains, nurse-led interventions were generally feasible, safe, and positively affected patient comfort, physiological stability, symptom relief, and aspects of functional recovery. CONCLUSION: Nurse-led inpatient interventions contribute meaningfully to inpatient post-operative recovery in cardiac surgery, although the broader cardiac surgical nursing scope is underrepresented in RCTs. This review provides a foundation for developing further high-quality research, peer-reviewed interdisciplinary practice guidelines, and strengthening the scope and recognition of cardiac surgical nursing as a distinct specialty. The effect of hip abductor or external rotator strength on dynamic knee valgus in healthy subjects-a systematic review with partial meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Weak hip abductors and external rotators (ER) have long been suggested to cause increased dynamic knee valgus. Patients are often prescribed strengthening of these muscles with the expectation that it will reduce their risk of pain and injury. The validity of this claim remains unclear. METHOD: We conducted a systematic review and partial meta-analysis assessing the association between hip strength and knee valgus in healthy subjects. An online search was conducted in May 2026. Databases included Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL and Google Scholar. INCLUSION CRITERIA: English language, asymptomatic subjects, dynamometric hip strength, single or multi-camera kinematic analysis, and statistical tests of difference or correlations between hip abductor or ER strength and dynamic valgus. Data were extracted concerning study design, subject characteristics, relevant outcome measures and statistics. RESULTS: 22 papers qualified for inclusion. Hip abductor correlations: 12 papers found no significant correlation, 2 supported the hypothesis and 2 found evidence contrary. Hip ER correlations: 8 papers found no significant correlation, 2 supported the hypothesis and 2 were contrary. Group differences for hip abduction strength: 3 papers found no difference, 2 found significant differences in support of the hypothesis, 1 found significant difference to contrary. Group differences for ER strength: 1 paper found no significant difference. None of the partial meta-analyses achieved statistical significance. CONCLUSION: Weakness in hip abductors or external rotators may not result in increased dynamic knee valgus in healthy subjects. While continued research may further illuminate our understanding, we discuss alternative explanations.

Late hiatal hernia after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a systematic review.

Obesity is a global public health issue. This condition is linked to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernia (HH), both of which are exacerbated by increased intra-abdominal pressure. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is one of the most widely performed techniques for treating obesity and is considered a versatile option suitable for most patients. The development of a symptomatic HH and pouch migration can lead to various symptoms and complications. PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central were searched for studies with late HH after RYGB. We pooled outcomes for symptom resolution. Secondary outcomes were recurrence rate and operation characteristics (mesh use, cruroplasty, gastropexy, reoperation, length of stay, and operative time). A meta-analysis could not be conducted due to significant heterogeneity in HH. HH following RYGB presents with GERD (39-93.6%), obstructive symptoms (29%-88%), and abdominal pain (28.6%-71%). Diagnostic methods include endoscopy, computed tomography scans, and upper gastrointestinal series. Surgical management varies, with primary cruroplasty being the most common approach, sometimes incorporating mesh or fundoplication. Postoperative symptom resolution rates range from 42.9% to 100%, with HH recurrence occurring in 5%-6.54% of cases. Follow-up durations varied, showing improvement in most patients, though some continued to experience reflux and dysphagia HH contributes to obstructive and reflux symptoms, with contrast-enhanced imaging offering the highest diagnostic accuracy. Bioabsorbable mesh may reduce recurrence, highlighting the need for long-term monitoring.

Predictive value of anal sphincter electromyography for sacral neuromodulation test-phase outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is an established therapy for refractory pelvic organ dysfunction. Anal sphincter electromyography (EMG) is commonly used preoperatively to assess sacral and peripheral nerve integrity. However, the prognostic significance of chronic neurogenic EMG changes for SNM outcomes remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether chronic neurogenic changes on preoperative anal sphincter EMG predict the outcome of the SNM test phase. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 62 consecutive patients with bladder and/or bowel dysfunction or pelvic pain who were candidates for SNM treatment and who underwent preoperative anal sphincter EMG. EMG findings were classified as normal or showing chronic neurogenic changes. SNM test-phase success was defined as a &#x2265;50% improvement of symptoms at 24&#xa0;days. Outcomes were compared between EMG groups. RESULTS: Of the 62 patients (49 women, 13 men), 30 (48%) had normal EMG findings and 32 (52%) showed chronic neurogenic changes. Overall, the SNM test phase was successful in 47 patients (76%). Success rates were similar in patients with normal EMG (72%) and neurogenic EMG changes (79%), with no statistically significant difference (p&#xa0;=&#xa0;0.878). Sex-stratified analyses revealed no significant association between EMG findings and test-phase success in women or men. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic neurogenic changes on anal sphincter EMG do not predict SNM test-phase outcomes. These findings suggest that abnormal sphincter EMG results should not be used as a standalone criterion to exclude patients from SNM therapy. SIGNIFICANCE: Signs of neurogenic damage on anal sphincter EMG are not an indicator of reduced neuromodulatory capacity or diminished clinical response to SNM.

Efficacy of high-intensity laser therapy versus ultrasound therapy in patients with knee osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: High-intensity laser therapy (HILT) and ultrasound (US) are widely used for knee osteoarthritis (KOA), but comparative efficacy data remain scarce. This study compared HILT and US as exercise adjuncts in patients with KOA. METHODS: In this single-center, assessor-blinded RCT, 66 adults with KOA were randomized 1:1 to HILT or US twice weekly for 6&#xa0;weeks as exercise adjuncts. The primary outcome was WOMAC total score change from baseline to 12&#xa0;weeks post-treatment (minimum important change [MIC]&#x2009;=&#x2009;10 points, applied as an approximation). Secondary outcomes included VAS, OKS, KOOS, and EQ-5D-5L. RESULTS: In ITT analysis (N&#x2009;=&#x2009;66), the HILT group achieved a mean WOMAC reduction of 40.0 vs 8.2 points (adjusted between-group difference: -27.7 points, 95% CI:&#x2009;-&#x2009;39.0 to&#x2009;-&#x2009;16.5; p&#x2009;<&#x2009;0.001, partial &#x3b7;2&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.277). At 12&#xa0;weeks post-treatment, greater improvements across all secondary outcomes were observed in exploratory analyses (p&#x2009;&#x2264;&#x2009;0.012). Furthermore, HILT maintained therapeutic effects up to 12&#xa0;weeks post-treatment, whereas the US group experienced a gradual loss of post-treatment gains. CONCLUSION: HILT combined with exercise produced greater short-term improvements in WOMAC total score than US in patients with KOA, with exploratory findings suggesting consistent benefits in pain, function, and quality of life, and with benefits maintained up to 12&#xa0;weeks after the last treatment session.

Gelified ethanol for percutaneous sclerotherapy of bone lesions: a systematic review of clinical applications and outcomes.

PURPOSE: To systematically review the available evidence on the feasibility, safety, and clinical effectiveness of percutaneous sclerotherapy using radiopaque gelified ethanol (RGE, Discogel&#xae;) for bone lesions. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL was performed. Primary studies reporting clinical, technical, and safety outcomes following RGE sclerotherapy for bone lesions were included. Data on patient characteristics, lesion type, procedural details, and outcomes were extracted and synthesized descriptively. RESULTS: Six retrospective studies involving 55 patients (mean age 22.2&#x2009;&#xb1;&#x2009;20.4&#xa0;years; range 3-65; 26 females) with 56 lesions and 119 procedures were included (mean 2.16 procedures per patient). Aneurysmal bone cysts (80%) and aggressive vertebral hemangiomas (18%) were the main indications. Technical success was reported in 100% of procedures. Pain outcomes were available for 28 patients, with complete resolution in 64.3% (18/28), partial reduction in 32.1% (9/28), and persistence in 3.6% (1/28). Radiological follow-up (50 lesions) demonstrated complete response in 96% and partial response in 4%. No major adverse events were reported according to CIRSE (&#x2265;&#x2009;4) or CTCAE (&#x2265;&#x2009;4) criteria. One SIR grade 3 vertebral fracture occurred without confirmed causal association to RGE. Subsequent surgery was required in 3.6% of lesions. CONCLUSION: Although limited to small retrospective series, current evidence suggests that RGE sclerotherapy is a safe and effective minimally invasive option for selected benign bone lesions. Prospective comparative studies with longer follow-up are warranted.

Bioabsorbable vs. titanium screws in first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis: a pilot randomized controlled trial with 2-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: To assess the feasibility and preliminary clinical outcomes of bioabsorbable screw fixation in first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis compared to conventional titanium screw fixation. METHODS: In this prospective pilot randomized controlled trial, 30 patients were allocated 1:1 to bioabsorbable or titanium cannulated lag screw fixation. Arthrodesis was performed using a cup-and-cone technique at two Finnish hospitals. Full weight-bearing in an orthopaedic shoe was allowed after six weeks. Outcomes included AOFAS and VA-FAS FA-VAS scores, union rates, and complications assessed at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. RESULTS: Both groups showed significant functional improvement with no between-group differences. At 24 months, mean AOFAS scores were 89.1 (SD 2.7) in the titanium group and 90.0 (SD 0.0) in the bioabsorbable group (p = 0.23). Mean FA-VAS total scores (sum of pain, function, and complaints subscales) were 1948 (SE 59.4) in the titanium group and 1914 (SE 61.4) in the bioabsorbable group (p = 0.655). Union rate was 90% overall; nonunion occurred in one titanium and two bioabsorbable patients, all requiring revision. No implant-related complications or hardware removal surgeries were recorded. Degradation of bioabsorbable screws caused no adverse clinical or radiographic reactions. CONCLUSIONS: Bioabsorbable screws appear safe and feasible in first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis, with preliminary outcomes comparable to titanium fixation. The science of Arabic coffee (Qahwa): from phytochemistry and nutritional profile to health benefits and safety evaluation.

Arabic coffee (Qahwa), a traditional beverage widely consumed in the Middle East, has attracted increasing scientific attention due to its distinctive phytochemical composition and associated health effects. This review provides an integrated analysis of Qahwa's nutritional profile, focusing on its key bioactive constituents, including chlorogenic acids, caffeine, diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol), and phenolic compounds. These constituents contribute to a range of biological activities, notably antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and metabolic regulatory effects. The influence of technological variables, including roasting degree, brewing method, and bean origin, on the chemical composition and functional properties is critically examined. Safety concerns, particularly acrylamide formation and mycotoxin contamination, are also discussed. Although emerging data support Qahwa's potential as a functional beverage, further research is required to clarify dose-response relationships, synergistic interactions, and long-term health outcomes. This work highlights Qahwa as a promising candidate for food and nutraceutical applications, warranting standardized compositional profiling and toxicological evaluation.

Comprehensive quality profiling and comparative metabolic characterization of seven dominant fresh-eating Chinese olive (Canarium album Lour.) cultivars in Southern China.

Fresh-eating Chinese olive (Canarium album Lour.) is a subtropical fruit endemic to southern China with considerable commercial value, yet systematic quality characterization of dominant cultivars remains scarce. This study established a multi-dimensional quality dataset for seven dominant cultivars from Fujian and Guangdong provinces, integrating nutritional components, soluble sugars, organic acids, mineral elements, volatile profiles, and non-targeted metabolomics. Significant cultivar-specific differences were observed across all evaluated dimensions: "Lingfeng" exhibited a sugar-dominant low-acid profile, whereas "Sanleng" showed elevated phenolic constituents accumulation. Volatile profiling identified terpenoid-based candidate discriminatory biomarkers, and metabolomic analysis revealed phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, tryptophan metabolism, and starch and sucrose metabolism as the most variable pathways. Correlations between untargeted profiling and targeted absolute quantification validated untargeted result reliability and revealed their complementarity in nutritional evaluation. These findings provide baseline data for FECO germplasm evaluation and targeted industrial utilization.

A randomized study of antibiotic prophylaxis after hypospadias repair in children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Antibiotic resistance is a challenge in contemporary world. Urethroplasty for hypospadias is one of the most common urological surgeries performed around the world, yet, there is still no consensus on the use of antibiotics pre- and post-operatively. Our objective was to analyze the effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis and therapy before, during, and after hypospadias repair in children. METHODS: A prospective randomized trial was carried out including patients with coronal hypospadias who underwent urethroplasty performed by one surgeon. Urethral catheters were used in all cases for 10 days. Study participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive a single intraoperative administration of antibiotics (Group I); an intraoperative antibiotic prophylaxis and antibiotic therapy for 10 days until the removal of urethral catheter (Group II); no antibiotic administration (Group III). Randomization was performed using computer-generated permuted blocks with randomly varying block sizes, prepared by an independent statistician. The results were analyzed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The following criteria were compared: postoperative functional complications, such as: urethral fistula, stenosis, diverticulum; wound infection symptoms: hyperemia of surgical site, pain during palpation, and symptomatic urinary tract infection. RESULTS: A total of 300 patients were included in the study. Two patients (2%) in Group I, two patients (2%) in Group II, and four patients (4%) in Group III had urethral fistulas, requiring surgery 6 months after primary repair, yet without statistical difference between groups. We found no significant difference in frequency of symptomatic UTIs between three groups (p = 0.182). CONCLUSION: There is no effect of antibiotic prophylaxis and therapy on the frequency of postoperative surgical and infectious complications after urethroplasty for coronal hypospadias repair in children.

Playing with Fire, Losing the Drive: Bidirectional Links Between Problematic Smartphone Use and Grit Dimensions.

This study examined bidirectional longitudinal associations between grit dimensions (consistency of interest [CI] and perseverance of effort [PE]) and problematic smartphone use (PSU) and tested cognitive flexibility as a mediating mechanism. A sample of 1,641 Chinese university students (55.2 percent female; Mage = 20.1 years) completed measures at two time points 6 months apart. A four-variable cross-lagged panel model revealed that CI and PSU negatively predicted each other over time, whereas PSU unidirectionally predicted decreased PE. Cognitive flexibility partially mediated the PSU-to-PE pathway (indirect effect = -0.004, 95 percent bootstrap CI [-0.010, -0.0001]). Competing models analysis confirmed this directionality: the forward mediation (PSU &#x2192; cognitive flexibility &#x2192; PE) was significant, whereas the reverse was not. These findings demonstrate that grit dimensions exhibit distinct longitudinal patterns with PSU and identify cognitive flexibility as a cognitive mechanism through which PSU specifically undermines effort persistence. Implications for dimensional approaches to grit and targeted interventions are discussed.

Non-destructive prediction of lead content in oilseed rape leaves by fluorescence hyperspectral technology based on neural network.

Based on fluorescence hyperspectral imaging (FHSI), this study targeted rapid, non-destructive quantification of lead (Pb) content in oilseed rape leaves treated with varying silicon (Si) concentrations, acquiring fluorescence spectra over the 484.43-1001.61&#xa0;nm wavelength range. To optimize spectral data quality, preprocessing methods (Savitzky-Golay smoothing, first derivative, detrending) were comprehensively compared. Characteristic wavelengths were then selected via interval variable iterative shrinkage, which effectively compressed data dimensionality and reduced computational load. A hybrid SE-CL1DA model, fusing a 1D convolutional neural network, a long short-term memory network and SE attention mechanism was constructed, with Bayesian optimization tuning hyperparameters to boost stability. The BO-SE-CL1DA outperformed both traditional machine learning and insufficiently optimized deep learning model (Rp2=0.9609, RMSE&#xa0;=&#xa0;0.0377&#xa0;mg/kg, RPD&#xa0;=&#xa0;5.1736), thus enabling accurate Pb estimation, supporting Si-regulated heavy metal stress management and facilitating agricultural contamination monitoring.
